Don't you just hate the posters that just have to type "_" and "." combinations in their postings? #What morons.
And another thing, while I'm bitching, what about all those Spanish speaking stations on 20 meters who seem to have all the propagation in the world on their side. #Why can't they speak English like the rest of the modern world.
And while I'm at it, what about the posters that always have to sign with a stupid metaphor at the end in some diminuative font size. #Give me a break.

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I guess I had not given much thought to the "_" and "." in peoples' posts, but I don't think they are "morons". Who knows, get to know them, they might not be "morons".
Also, if two people on 20 meters are speaking Spanish, or some other language, why should they speak English just to appease you? For all you know, they could be friends talking in their native language, in their native land. If one chooses to move to Germany or China, that person should not expect the Germans or Chinese to learn English just for them. Anyway, --... ...--

Maybe you should be the one learning to speak Spanish!
Here's a snip from an Associated Press story from June 9, 2005 --
By Pauline Jelinek / Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- Hispanics accounted for half the 2.9 million U.S. population growth from 2003 to 2004 and now constitute one-seventh of all people in the United States.
A Census Bureau report issued Thursday said that trend probably will continue because of immigration and a Hispanic birth rate outstripping non-Hispanic blacks and whites.

If you knew how to speak three languages and I knew how to speak three languages, but we both were native english speakers, don't you think we would speak english on the radio no matter where we were in the world? (assuming we were speaking to each other)

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Exactly. I think that if you are going to live in a particular country, you should learn whatever the language is. Since he was talking about ham radio, though, I guess any language is fine.

Although I don't see eye to eye on the must speak English idea I am as they say in Baseball 120 % behind the chicken scratch thing.
In my opinion that is all it is chicken scratch on the screen,it has NO bearing to the ability to copy CW off the air.I think it shows the desires of a "WANNABEE" if any thing at all. It would be more in order at a CUB SCOUT meeting with their little flash lites to communicate back and forth for their Merit badge.
Why don't I just ignore it,what a fantastic idea ,that's just what I do.I ignore it with the idea it will go away when everyone takes their nap after the afternoon cookies and milk.

En la boca cerada, no entran moscas. (old Mexican proverb)
That's surely mispelled, but I can barely speak some of the language, forget about writing it. I can speak enough Spanish to order a Big Mac in Galveston. We found out that my wife couldn't on a recent trip - the counter help at the McD's on the south highway didn't speak a word of English and didn't understand her.
I prefer to send code with a Vibroplex.

1. Propagation is for everybody, not only for Spainish speaking, maybe you should get a better antenna than them #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif
2. Well, assume that if they speak Spanish, they DO NOT WANT to contact English speaking countries. Now if you reply a cq in Spanish, there is 80% chance the guy will make the effort speaking in English.
3. How many languages do you (really) speak?

I must remember that, specially in Miami, the spanish language learning in the schools is a must. In certain US towns, if you search a bit, it is possible to find a real american citizen who speaks only english!
About the hamradio best language, there are many ham groups, inclusive in my country, Brazil, who speak only Esperanto. It is obviously a nice trial, but with very poor results.
To learn foreign languages is not a bad thing. I know a Lebanon guy living in Brazil who speaks no 'more' than 32 languages and he has proved it!
If I remember well, the 'champion' was an already deceased Vatican cardinal who spoke more than 70! Unfortunately he was not a hamradio operator!

Sounds like we all need a group hug this morning.
I agree that learning at least some spanish is a good thing.
I took 3 years of conversational spanish in HS and 2 more in college where it was more in depth. The only time I really got to use it was on the air when I was working spanish speaking stations, and although I could converse on some level I was not very polished in its use. Over the years I almost never used it and have all but lost it.
