My oldest daughter is getting married soon, and I am looking for a good father-daughter dance song. I don't know why I am asking a bunch of Ham radio guys, except perhaps that I feel a little pressured.

Any ideas guys?

I would use the Beatles “And I love her” it is slow enough that even I can dance to it. The words bring a pretty emotional feeling to me may work for you too.

....might try " hair of the dog " by heavy metal rock group Nazareth. Easy to dance to ...and I dont think any one will ever forget that one tune all night long.

"Turn Around" by Dick and Deedee, 1964 Very appropriate lyrics for the occasion. Nice slow melody to dance to also. See the lyrics at the link below if you don't remember it:

http://ntl.matrix.com.br/pfilho/html/top40/1964.html

KA9VQF's suggestion: "And I love Her" (Beatles, A Hard Day's Night album, 1964) would be outstanding to fade into from "Turn Around" for the groom to cut-in on and complete the dance.

scroll down to "Turn Around" and click on it.

That takes me back to my first girlfriend. I like that song both on its own and as the cut-in song just as brl suggested. You guys have me all choked with emotion.

Thanks!

I think I want to go to any wedding you plan! Ahhhh! The smell of leather, cigarettes, and stale beer really come back clearly to me while that song is playing!

Thanks OM!

Land of a Thousand Dances, Hannibal and the Headhunters. Obscure, but awesome.

Johnny Horton's The Battle Of New Orleans works at almost any important social occasions and I am sure it would work for a father daughter dance as well.

I know the family was really moved by this song when we used it at my mother's funeral.

Hmmm. And while you've got that CD in the player, you could play "Love Hurts." http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I really don't know sometimes when my leg is being pulled or not! Thank you if your suggestion was a serious one -- and even if it wasn't!

I have decided to go with "Turn Around", AKA "Where are You Going My Little One" as performed by the Kingston Trio.

"Yesterday" by the Beatles wouldn't be a bad dance song either, esp paired with either of the other ones you liked.

It certainly is! I've added it to the list of suggested songs to be played, though my daughter will have the final approval of the song list.. All I get to do is make suggestions and write the checks!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Special thanks to Steve, wa4brl, for suggesting just the right song. A couple of other suggested sentimental sappy songs are making it on the list as well. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Now my only problem is my height. I am only 6' tall and I have to dance with my super tall and athletic daughter! I guess she will not be wearing any heels for the wedding, but still....

Here she is with her best friend:

She's a fine looking lady indeed. Her new hubby to be is a lucky man. Nothing wrong with a tall lady. I'm 6'4" and am the midget of my family. My wife is 6'. I also have a cousin who is 6'8" and about 280lbs. SHE played basketball in college (as if you couldn't imagine!)

I don't think I can top the list of possibilities you've already gotten so I won't try. Good luck and best wishes to all on the future marriage.

How about Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight"?

I got a brief comment in the local paper last time he was in town... there was a review of the concert, and they made mention of a couple being asked to sit down for "dirty dancing" to that song. We didn't dirty dance, I just thought it would be nice to dance to that song whilst he played it live...

I really like that song (I like a lot of Clapton's work), and it was one I actually thought of on my own. This is wierd, but my wife thinks it is somehow sexist, and I decided it was the better part of valor to keep my dissent to myself.

I can't imagine it being sexist... then again, I was perturbed with the security nazi that told us to sit down.

The early 60's movie "Mondo Cane" is anything but romantic, but its theme song, "More" might be appropropriate.

You might accidentally misspell the title "Morse".

Thanks! She used to be so shy and tiny, hiding behind my legs if I was talking to a stranger. Now she is super extroverted! LOL!

It sounds like you come from tall stock!

Her fiance' is an army sniper, and will be going to Iraq in August, so they won't have much time together after they get married. He was in the Rangers, but got hurt and spent a long time recovering and is now a sniper for some reason.

He seems like a nice kid, but I am worried that with his career they will experience a lot of lonely and sad days separated by a planet.

Most folks "my age" would recognize the tune immediately, and might even know the words:

More...than the greatest love the world has known,
This is the love I give to you alone.

More...than the simple words I try to say,
I only live to love you more each day...

...My heart will be in your keeping:
Waking, sleeping, laughing, weeping..

Longer than always is a long, long time,
So far beyond forever, you'll be mine....

(Didn't say I remembered ALL the lyrics!).

I have tried all kinds of dances under the influence of ethanol, but I basically am an object of ridicule for casual observers. The other folks that will be at the reception are likely to skilled at tango.

I’m wondering if you are planning to have a band or a DJ? Many of the local DJ’s around here will not play anything but their own play list and simply refuse to play any burns that you may provide.

If you are having a band I sure hope you have good luck getting them to learn any of the tunes you want to hear.

Not all that long ago I brought my own stereo to a wedding reception {at the request of the parents of the bride, the parents of the groom didn’t seem to approve for whatever reason} and played anything anyone bothered to bring to me. I have a pretty limited selection of disks myself. Most of what I have are burns from my vinyl LP’s.

The tunes I personally had were ‘older than dirt’ according to the happy couple but the service was ‘free’ to them, just the food and drink that I would have had anyway as a friend of the family, so they didn’t bitch to much.
I did get a really nice professionally made card thanking me for bring my equipment and playing the music.

I also provided a wireless mic for the fellow with the camcorder to use. It is a real cheap ‘Mr. Microphone’ only takes two AA batteries and broadcasts in mono on the FM broadcast band, but I have a little stereo radio, that came with some cheap ear buds, that I have taken the ear bud off one side and put a 1/8” plug in its place. This plugs into the external mic jack on the camcorder and you can then plug the remaining ear bud into your ear so you can hear the audio.

We then send someone out into the crowd with the mic and have ’interviews’ with the attendees. Makes for some interesting video sometimes.

Just try to remember to shut the mic off when they go to the can.
