Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root Services of Arlington, Virginia will build a new $30 million detention facility and security fence at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the United States is holding about 520 foreign terrorism suspects, the Defense Department announced on Thursday.

The story doesn't say if the halliburton subsidiary had to bid to get the contract. I'm betting it didn't.
Sounds like more corporate welfare for dubya's buddies.

Why don't they just ask the French if Devil's Island is available?

You lose.
It was competitively bid with two other contractors.

Although I don't purposely listen, my wife is a "real" Rush Limbaugh fan and she has his program playing for the entire 3 hours that he is on even when we are in the car.
Today as we were going to the grocery store I heard Limbaugh advertise some "Club Gitmo" tee shirts that are available on his website. It seems that there are 3 different "sayings" available that are printed on the back of the shirt. They are "prisoner orange" in color.
Also, someone suggested that instead of being "housed" on a tropical island that those who are incarcerated at that location should be moved to somewhere near Point Barrow, Alaska, if not further north.
Something to "think" about! They definitely could be "worse off".

NO WAY JOSE! I don't want the terrorist creeps, the falsely imprisoned victims, the snooze media or whatever other chaos that happens south of the Arctic Circle to make its way up here!
In case you haven't noticed, the frigid weather and deep powdery snow of the Arctic means that with their thin fur and short legs, THAR BE NO DACHSHUND HERE!!!
That is how it starts you know... First Terrorists start showing up in ones and twos... then Dachshunds!!!! (Shudder.)

Now I just don't understand why people are "bad mouthing" Dachshunds. Now a Chihuahua is a different matter. The only dog that ever really "hated" me was a Chihuahua named "Lady Adono Cocoa" that belonged to one of my girlfriends when I was in high school. That dog would attack me every time that I went over to her house.
In fact she would attack anyone who wasn't a member of their family. But I never came across a Dachshund that wasn't friendly. My best friend in high school (K9LHC) had a Dachshund named Otto that was one of the most friendly dogs that I have ever been around.
I guess that I will have to start "The Friends of Dachshunds" organization just to get the "weiner dog" their proper respect!

Maybe we can put Dick Cheney personally in charge of the project since he is already secreatly working for "Halyburton". ooops... I'm sorry... he can't go. He's currently tied up looking for more kickbacks from all those oil deals he got from Iraq. Well, maybe they will send Condi over to Gitmo in his place since she's part this "vast right wing conspiracy". http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Hi all,
Oh goody, more grist for the Radio Havana mill. Why not the Navy training station at Great Lakes Michigan? I hear the weather is great, won't need security or Dachunds in winter, just stack them in the corner until spring.
BTW, my uncle had a Chihuahua with a garlic aroma that could level Tacoma and would attack relentlessly when it wasn't shakin' an' pissin'. It's name was Bebe, reminds me of Bebe Rebozo.
Gotta love ya Mac!

Mr.Glen, no disrespect intended but if I had to listen to Rush for that length of time I would just puke from nausea.

It is only when we are in the car that I have to "listen" to Limbaugh. Most of the time we are at home and I can go into another room, out in the radio shack, etc.
Once in a while I find him entertaining. But, most of the time I find him to be an egotistical bore.
Now, I am a "moderate" conservative and my wife isn't that much far "right" than I am. But, she has to listen to Limbaugh every day. Now, once in a while, she gets really "mad" at him and says that she isn't going to listen any more. However, by the next day she is listening again.
Her eldest sister and brother-in-law are real "diddo-heads". They cannot even go to lunch without taking their portable radios with them. Myself, I can definitely do without Limbaugh.

Back to the original topic.
$30M to build a prison on an island that doesn't belong to us? #If I remember correctly we have a 99 year lease with Cuba for Gitmo which was made during the pre-Castro years. #I would venture that we have about 40 years or so left on that lease. #So why don't we put that prison elsewhere, say like Dry Tortugas? http://www.nps.gov/drto/ # That way, when the hostilities are over we can use it as a tourist attraction.
OK, you Dry Tortugas fans can douse your flames, this was intended as HUMOR

Speaking of Limbaugh, has anyone heard about the status of his drug problems (i.e., whether the law is still going to prosecute him for the oxycodin violations)? I haven't been keeping up with this so it may have been in the news and I've missed it.

OES:
From what I understand there have been some court rulings on the seizure of his medical records. However, if they were to prosecute Limbaugh on the fact that he alledgedly overused the prescription drugs then the authorities would be obligated to prosecute many thousands of others who have done exactly the same thing.
In my mind there is a difference between someone who has become addicted to pain killers because they were first prescribed for a medical condition and those who use the drugs for "recreational" purposes. I used to take hydrocodone (which can become addictive) for my rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, I was taking a relatively large dose every day. However, in general but not always, those people who are taking those types of drugs who really "need" them do not become addicted. There are exceptions or if someone continues to take the drugs when they are not necessary there is a definite chance of becoming addicted.
I went "off" hydrocodone when other drugs became available. However, it seems that those pain killers have side effects that can be problematic. One drug that I was taking was recently removed from the market is called "Bextra". It really relieved my pain. My cardiologist approved the dosage that I was taking so long as I did not continue for over a year. Unfortunately, I developed an allergy to Bextra, I started breaking out in hives whenever I took any. Now, this is one of the side effects of the drug that is noted in the information that accompanies the drug.
As such, I still have a "supply" of Bextra but I am NOT taking any. The last time I took some it took over 4 weeks for my skin to clear up! My wife's eldest sister was taking Bextra and was "devestated" when it was removed from the market. It was the only drug that effectively controlled her pain.
Anyway, as I said before, I am not a "fan" of Rush Limbaugh. He can be entertaining at times but normally is so "taken" with himself that I can't "stand" him! Besides, there is only room on the planet for one "perfect" person and since I am that person http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif Rush Limbaugh cannot be perfect!

Without doing a Google search, what I can vaguely remember is that his maid (or someone else's maid?) was helping him obtain some of his supply, and that he was also doctor shopping (i.e., going to a variety of doctors who didn't know that other doctors were prescribing the same pain medication). Evidently that is against the law.
I certainly don't blame anyone for getting hooked on pain medication. The only reason it was newsworthy, I suppose, is the divergence between what Rush preached (did he rant about drug addicts?) and how he behaved. Hypocrisy among celebrities always makes the news I guess.
Given my youthful shenanigans, it is certainly not my place to cluck my tongue at others. That would be hypocritical! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
