View Full Version : Packet radio on CB frequencies?

The CB repeater discussion in another thread brought back a memory of some 300 baud packet operations around 27.540, and IIRC 26.720. Anyone been monitoring either of these frequencies lately - and if so, have you been seeing any digital activity?

I haven't listened - but would not be surprised to hear some activity there.

CB Packet is illegal in the US from what I understand, but at one time it was very popular in Europe and Asia. - Maybe it still is.

...and only one week after the DAYTON hamfest !!

Kind of provides an idea that some one stuff did not sell, threw it in a dumpster and some one else went " dumpster diving " !!

Ya just neva know !

Hi guys,

Every once in a while a CB packet to Internet gateway shows up on the worldwide Amateur Radio BBS network. It's always some land line lid operation that has to be blocked, just one more reason I HATE INTERNET LINKS!

BTW, since there is little to no 10M activity these days (except the local groups) I no longer tune the 11M "beacon band". Now I'm out of here before this thread turns into another garbage heap like the other one did.

I will say one thing though, those unintelligble transmissions are typical of dumb bunny CBers trying to use AM and/or SSB on an FM repeater. They probably are just as unintelligable on the input, never have I heard a well modulated CB signal since crystals, tubes and "stock mics" went out of style. I was KMD7606 using a Multi Elmac (Remember those ham rigs?) Citi Fone.

Some of the most interesting SSTV transmissions are to be found below 28.0 MHz.

During the mid-to-late 90's I had one of the bigger MSYS systems on the air in NE Ohio - and it was a running battle to keep the non-ham 3rd-party traffic out of the setup.

Mike ended up writing a filter which would nix all 3x2 "callsigns", as these jokers tended to use things like "USA1NY", "ITA2GH" and so forth when configuring their setups.

Most of the non-ham stations were at the time running variants of F6FBB software. In some parts of Europe, packet via CB radio is indeed legal - the problem arose when those SysOps attempted to tie into the ARS packet network. Third-party traffic regs and non-ham-originated content...

Used to get a lot of traffic from South America as well. The two freeband "hot spots" were 27.540 and 26.720. A receiver parked on each frequency, coupled to an HF TNC and fed into a PC with appropriate disk-buffering capabilities used to yield an enormous volume of captured traffic.

It's been a number of years since I heard anything on either frequency, although various commentary found 'round the 'Net indicates that those frequencies and a few others in the 6.670 MHz region still see a fair share of packet activity.

I have heard something which MIGHT be " packet bursts " locally on 27.255 Mhz ( cb channel 23 ) on certain days/nights in last week or so.

Never owned a CB so I can't help. Sorry. I don't tune down there on the HF gear either. I can listen to the same nonsense on 75 meters if I want. Hi. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I have heard that weird sound on 27.255 in North Carolina while I was fixing a mike wire for one of my CB buddies.
