I did not see Bernie Goetz at the Hamvention this year. I did meet him at the Cincinnati hamfest many years ago however.

The famous (or infamous, per your viewpoint) subway vigilante Bernhard Goetz is evidently a ham:
Quote[/b] ]The Swapfest is also said to be a former stomping ground for that most notorious of nerds, Bernhard Goetz. New Yorkers dubbed Goetz the "subway vigilante" after he shot four youths he believed were about to mug him in 1984.
Goetz in an e-mail said he was unavailable for an interview. He indicated in his message that he was busy at the Dayton Hamvention.

I don't find him in the QRZ database, however.

Let's face it, were nerds, plain and simple. Look around at any Hamfest, you see 40-90 year old nerds, geeks, what ever. If we had computers then, we would have been geeks. We are now "teh 1337" of the electronics hobby.

Quote[/b] ]Another ham pastime is "ragchewing," in which operators chat about everything from new gadgets to runaway brides from their shacks or their cars, with the help of rooftop antennas and local repeaters.
They forgot about long drunken dissertations on one's medical problems. I guess they weren't listening to 80 mtrs (thank god)
My favorite part was that if you belong to a club with a large transmitter you can talk to other hams around the world. Darn I have been doing it wrong, I don't belong to a club and my transmitter is small. Now I have transmitter envy. Hi HI.

Nerd? Did you call ME a nerd???
Ya know what, that's not a bad article. Sure, it says we're nerds and most of us are. But then it gets mostly into the positive sides of ham radio. It's not bad at all for us. More like it would be fine with me.

What is a "beeb"? I glean that a "beeb" is something to do with the BBC, but what?

I had a 560, in 1973.
That thing put out almost 300 watts into my "invisible" antenna of #28 wire strung between the back window of my apartment and a tree on the property. The antenna was almost invisible but the 300 watts was not, as I found out from my neighbors http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Nice radio though.

Look at the old-showroom photo given some prominence in the current AES catalog and check out the guys -- particularly the one in center frame with glasses.
Nerds and ham radio have always been a happy m.

But the difference between ham radio nerds of the past and today's internet nerds is that the former could get real girlfriends, and so they didn't settle for phonesex or the internet equivalent. True--CW sex could cause some NASTY burns. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Like I've always said: "Girls dig guys who know the Code". AD5TD reveals that he knows why.
Keyboarders just don't get it. Although the guys deft at using a mouse with a scroll wheel might come close! Still, rhythm is the key.
The "Pointer Sisters" made it clear in their song Slow Hand (if you're not familiar with it, you better look up the lyrics!) Yep, I've found 7 WPM is just about right! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Not sure why Mr. Goetz is not listed in the FCC database. Maybe he is not a ham. But then again why does he go to hamfests? Interesting indeed.
I loved the article.. and I know that I am a nerd. I used to have long air, but everytime it grows out the school always makes me cut it. I enjoy working DX on my IC-718 and listening to the Beatles on my Apple Ipod.. I am a super nerd.. HAHA!

Bernie Goetz was a ham some years ago. I met him at a hamfest. During his time in jail on the bogus gun charge, he fixed NY City two way radios. That was his jailhouse job. Guess it beat making license plates.

OWO: How appropriate, listening to the Beatles on the Apple Ipod. All their later work was on their own Apple label. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
