QRZ does not seem to be much of a Sport's fan haven but seems like QRZ'ers have some interest in Baseball?

Going to see the Red's tonight play the Met's. Tom Glavin pitching for the Mets and Ken Griffey for the Reds(the only active over 500 home runs non-steroid player ) alone are worth the price of admission!

Reds are picked 3rd or 4th in their Division but I think they are going to win the division

How do you expect your team to do? Who is your pre-season pick to meet in the World Series?

Go Cubs!!!

(Not that I really watch much baseball, but being from the Chicago area it would be nice to see them do well again.)

I'm with YCO. A Cubbie fan out here in South Dakota; although my favorite in the American League is the Twins! Both are now 1-1 and the Cubbies sure looked good on opening day!
EFA, I'm envious! Have a great time at the game, and enjoy! BTW, how do you like that new ballpark as compared to Riverfront Stadium? 73

I am optomistic, the Reds will not be in the basement, maybe 5th.

Then again, who cares? I have not paid attention to baseball since the first strike.

Too bad too, I used to go to Crosley Field to see Gordie Coleman, watched Hank Aaron play here, the big Red Machine... now days, who cares!

The Angels came home to LA?? What -- Not playing in Anaheim any more?

"LA Angels of Anaheim" --- what a hoot!

Dumbest sports naming since "Oriole Park at Camden Yards" or "The Ballpark at Arlington."

What nasty fertilizer do these guys smoke when they come up with these names?

My team will loose as usual.

I find that if I keep my expectations low, it makes watching the games easier.

Well, so far there's only 3 Mariners that have more than one hit... if the rest of the batting order can't get it together, it's gonna be another long season of losses. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

There will be an offical World Series this year. An offical World Series being one with the Yankees in it. With any amount of luck (and a miracle) they will face the Cubs

totally lost interest when they went on strike the 1st time, no use for crybabies who complain about 1 year salary caps that are more than most of us will make in our lives, as well as those who get paid all that money and can't run 90ft without pulling a hamstring.

What ever happened to the D.C. team? Wasn't there some issue with them having a team last year? Shows how much I pay attention to what's going on in sports. That was baseball I'm thinking of isn't it? Just curious.

They exist, and they're called the Washington Nationals. They lost their first game, too (not sure if they've won one yet)... which just goes to show, you can take the Expos out of Montreal, and they still suck. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I dunno if I'd call it a team, the only reason they're not in last place is because the Mets are even worse. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Don't care if they ground up every baseball on the planet. After listening to a bunch of millionaires cry while playing for a few innings here and there. The first strike they had, was the last for me, I haven't watched it since.

I listen to and support the poor 'real working souls' with real $$ problems, not a group of rich kids with bad attitudes.

Well they get what the market will bring - how can you blame the players. Remember 25,000 paying people come to watch them every night and millions on TV.

If I were a Baseball player I would take the money just as you would, wouldn't you?

To K0EWS - the new stadium is beautiful. We were in the front row between first base and the outfield. Little kids would come down between innings and the outfielder would toss them a ball after warming up before the inning started. The smiles on those Kid's faces were just awesome! The only problem was $6.00 for a beer! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Speaking of stadiums, Safeco Field in Seattle has a great feature... in certain sections, there are cards you can fill out a food order on, and there's a person to go and get you your food and bring it to you. No more missing the big play because you were in line! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sounds like a good time. I've not been to that many stadiums; only Kansas City, St. Louis, and Minneapolis. I always liked the one in KC, but the other two; Busch stadium was hotter than h*!! the day I went, and the dome in Minnesota is best suited for football. I have been by several others but not in. The one in Cinci and the one in Pittsburgh look neat. I would like to go to Wrigley in Chicago, the one in San Francisco, and of course, Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium some day. Now to just get the XYL to go along with it.
Glad you had a great time! Six bucks a beer? Reminds me of the year I went to a Twins game after the strike ended in 95. 3 dollars admission, and 3.50 per beer.

Ya gotta like that!
Last year I got to go to Miller Park, the gleaming new monolith of the Milwaukee Brewers that they had some trouble with in the beginning. It's turned out to be a beautiful park and a nice place to spend a summmer day. We went, free of charge, courtesy of the company that my girlfriend works for, but we were quite spoiled by it since it was a private deck with catered food, private bathrooms and a bar. Not exactly bleacher bummin' it, but I do know they have roving vendors and people you can order from as well as a resturaunt. Each ticket got you two free beers at the private bar (which went to my girlfriend and some other co-workers since I would probably yack if I drank beer), and unlike most of the big execs strolling around I was actually tipping. Last time I went back the bartender told me if I wanted more no problem, tipping is good karma, comes back to you. All in all it seems like a really nice park whether you get spoiled or sit in the regular seats and just reinforces why baseball is so much better at the park than on TV. Hell, the Brewers even won.

Son,

You have got to get to Wrigley, esp when the ivy is out and fully greened up. It may be old and old fashioned but there is no better place to be then "the friendly confines" on a summer day watching a ball game.

To each his own as far as ball parks, but Kansas City is one of the cookie cutter sterile ball parks that really turn me off. Plus it is also hot as the hinges of hades in the summer time. What turned me off the most when we were down there a few times is the park staff's insistance on keeping the fans, esp the kids away from the rails esp before the game and between innings. It seemed they didn't want the kids to be able to talk to any of the players or get any free suvineers from the ball players or any autographs. Hopefully they have changed their attitudes down there since I gave up taking my son down there. It has been quite a few years since we were down there so hopefully they have become more fan friendly since that time. Some of their people acted like the fans in the stands were nothing but a bother and a PITA to have around.

Hi all,

Being from the NY metro area naturally I became a Yankees fan early on, then came the Metros. I wear a Cubs jacket but you won't see me in it up in the Bronx or out in Queens. (;->)

Come to think of it, I remember one game where it was pretty hot there. Otherwise, I always liked those fountains and I liked the fact that the stadium was built just for baseball, but you are right, it definitely came out of the cookie cutter era for sure.
I would LOVE to go to a game at Wrigley. I've been wanting to since I was a kid, but never seem to be in Chicago when the Cubs are playing. Perhaps this is the summer that me and the XYL go over there and discover the friendly confines. My sister goes to a couple games a year over there and absolutely loves it.
I don't remember the experience in KC to be that bad, but the last time I went, I was with friends, and didn't have any kids along. I will freely admit, however, it's been a while.

Wrigley Field is one of the good old ball parks, I've been there many times and it is just a great place with history and atmosphere. Too bad the original Comisky is long gone, this US Cellular field crap is a prime example of cookie cutter corporate parks. I'm sure the facilities are nice, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original, or to a classic park like Wrigley.

I am an Astros fan and in spite of rooting for them no matter what I don't see better than 3rd place at the end of the season. Of course, I did not expect them to win 36 of the last 46 last year. So you never know.

At Minute Maide Park (really a dumb name but hey they forked over the $) beer is $6.00 a bottle. The food is pretty good though. A large soda (Diet Coke) and a bag of peanuts will kill a $10.00 bill. You can still do ok on dollar hot dog nights and with the right coupon book(fundraiser books that students sell) you can get some decent 1/2 price tickets.

The Astrodome was a neat place to watch baseball but you were far from the action. A player could hit the ball and you would hear the crack of the bat about a second after the ball was struck. Did see some neat things there...Nolan Ryan's debut with Houston, a Mike Scott 1 hitter, a shot that Darryl Strawberry hit to right field, the hitless wonder Astros when 13 home runs led the team . No steroids with those guys.

Baseball...in spite of all its problems is still my sport of choice. You gotta love it!

Which SF field? Candlestick or PacBell?

I've been to Candlestick, it was a cold, windy, miserable place to play baseball. They used to offer the "Croix de Candlestick," a pin which said, "I Came. I Saw. I Survived" for anyone that stayed till the end of an extra-inning night game.

PacBell - I would rather have went to Candlestick though. When my wife and I visited SF in the summer we were not prepared. I had assumed CA was warm in the summer - big surprise

I believe it was Mark Twain who said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

Winds off the ocean, winds off the bay... no wonder it's cold there. Heck of a place to put a city, if ya ask me.
