Howdy everybody! I would like to announce the grand opening of the KG4YUV 10 meter beacon! I guess most of you know it, but I'm a 16 year old Extra class operator.

One day I got the interest to convert a CB over to 10 meters. Bill, WJ5O, suggested I make a 10 meter beacon. Well for the past month I've been waiting for the keyer kit to get here in the mail (Dale, N0XAS, was a bit backed up with orders). I finally assembled and programed my PICOkeyer kit, and now the Midland CB is now a fully functional 24/7 10 meter beacon.

Here's the details if anyone wants to give it a listen while roaming 10 meters for an opening:

KG4YUV/B
28.253 MHz
4 watts
Solarcon A99 on the side of the house
Dead carrier keying @ 13 WPM

I just put the beacon on today. I'm in NW Georgia, and it's already been heard by a station in San Francisco, CA. This is my first full project.

Congrats my friend for completing the project. No copy on the beacon at this time from the station here in Texas, but I have my R-600 set on frequency, and will turn it on daily to see if I can recieve it. I will let you know if I do.

Great Job. I'll be listening for it too.

I had a beacon on the air a few years ago & had quite a few QSL cards from around the world. I was running 1 watt from a dipole at 15 feet.

This all came to a sudden end when I was testing out a new 1.5 kW amp..........I had forgot to unhook the 10 meter beacon radio's antenna.

Moral of the story, ALWAYS remember to remove the /B antenna!!!!!!!!

Good luck,

I hope you don't mean "dead carrier" on 28.253 MHz. CW keying isn't a dead carrier, it's a mode.

A dead carrier without keying or modulation is A0 and allowed only for testing purposes with a proper ID within 10 minutes. An ID requires keying or modulation!

I'm simply paraphrasing on "dead carrier".

I simply mean the keyer is keying the carrier of the CB on and off, but with no modulation of course. Just on-off carrier.

Yep, that's called "CW." If you posted your beacon info anywhere, I'd go back and revise the "dead carrier" stuff, and simply list "CW 13 wpm."

If it's a modified CB, I hope you disabled the AM modulator altogether (not just by unplugging the microphone), because most of these inexpensive transceivers still have modulation with no mike plugged in: It's hum and noise modulation, from the preamp and modulator, whether anything's driving them or not.

Simply "disconnecting" the modulator altogether alleviates this potential problem of unintended noise modulation on the CW signal.

I thought I heard it last night around 11 pm CDST...about a s-2 on a ranger 2950 hooked up to a maco v 5/8 metal vertical base antenna at 18 feet above the ground...ground elevation 1000 feet above sea level ( give or take a foot )...will listen again tonight and try to give better info..

Listening now on the R-600, and I can't hear it. Hopefully I will be able to one day. The R-600 is hooked to a wire 8ft or so off the ground. I tried on the vert with the IC-718, and got noise too. I will keep trying, and let you know what happens.

Alright, great to hear that my beacon is getting heard by the QRZ board members. I've been getting a few responses on the HF Beacon reflector, and it just astounds me that the little CB in my basement that I converted over is getting out like that. Just incredible...
