The NASA World Wind program (http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/download.html) is a remarkable global mapping project. Although it requires downloading a huge program (almost a gig), it really is worth it to see aerial and satellite photos as well as areas in the news.
I like the parts that let you fly through mountain ranges. It does take awhile to learn many of its features so patience is required.
