Just like telecom, with the "Baby Bells" reuniting, it looks like we're doing the same thing on the oil side.

All three of these companies had roots in the old Standard Oil.

As Bart Simpson would say" "uh, oh, This isn't good..."

Good point, Dave. Actually, it probably goes further than that; predatory practices by Wal-Mart, Microsoft, the mass media, etc., etc.
A hundred years ago, Teddy Roosevelt called for government regulation, a park service, anti-trust legislation, etc.. He got most of that. He was a Republican; today he would be considered a liberal.
All of the problems that were addressed back then are still with us; companies re-merging; forming monopolies.
Cheap, child labor in developing nations. Rather than corporations paying American workers, they "outsource" labor to countries with little or no labor laws.
Government de-regulation of airlines and the telecomunications industry, among other things.
Opening up the ANWAR environmental areas for oil drilling.
Seems like we have turned the circle and history is repeating itself.
Boy, we sure could use a good Republican like Teddy Roosevelt again, I think.
BTW, the oil companies had a record profit last year, so in spite of the Mid-East situation and a higher global demand, I do believe that the average American is getting jerked around.
We created this mess. We never continued the conservation practices enacted in the late 70s/early 80s that made oil cheap to begin with. Too many folks like their SUVs and 4X4s, and too many folks like to drive 75 mph on the highways.
We should have seen this one coming. You would think we learned the first time around 30 years ago.

The big deal here is that the oil companies are making record profits. The price we pay at the pumps has been jacked up far more than what would be due to the percentage of the price per barrel of oil. The media seems to ignore the problem. wink wink nod nod

There has been a fire at a large Texas refinery, but the reserves are at short term highs. The word monopoly comes to mind.

Yes, I see very HIGH prices in our Future for Gasoline and Everything else, since everything else is dependant on Oil!

Sure Glad we have a RepuliKan in Office to Protect us from Big Business....oh wait, Repuplikans are the Owners of Big business...Or bought by the Owners of Big Business.

President Bush even before the Freeing of the Iraqi people was negoiating for oil in other countries, but most of the ignorant voters didn't even know there was a problem.

Remember the crying that he was attacking for the oil? That alone shows the ignorance and stupidity level involved in the public.

As a result, we have the best health care system in the world, if you judge by the quality of care. Our regulations ensure that the drugs are safe and that the care you recieve in a hospital is good. Government regulation did that. What needs to be de-regulated is prices on drugs. While I do know that some re-investment of capital is necessary for research and development, these drug companies also turn huge profits. Another thing, why don't the drug companies take the money that they spend to run those STUPID ads on TV, and lower prices?
Speaking of regulation, another thing that needs to be regulated are those stupid and frivolous lawsuits; and there should be clear guidelines on malpractice suits and statutes of limitations. Perhaps we need greater government regulation of the legal industry in this country.

The basic part of the problem, as has been mentioned about the drug companies, is the amount of revenue generated by the oil companies. Some thing that is making money, and more of it all the time, is NEVER going to get smaller without a complete change in the system. It's easy to blame politicians with an oil background like Bush Jr. & Sr., they certainly haven't helped but neither party wants to interfere with big business, but the biggest problem is us; we produce more petroleum based products beyond gas in this country than pretty much anyone else. For that matter we produce more garbage and pollution that just about anyone else. We as a public whole have helped to exacerbate the problem by never fully embracing alternatives, conservation, and indulging the manufacturers that produce tons of unecessary packaging and disposable items without a thought to the ramifications.

k0ews says:
Quote[/b] ]
As a result, we have the best health care system in the world, if you judge by the quality of care. Tell that to the 43% or whatever the current figure is of Americans who can't afford full medical coverage and the other significant amount who fall into the can't afford any coverage and don't qualify for the gvt. health care hand outs.

Quote[/b] ] Our regulations ensure that the drugs are safe and that the care you recieve in a hospital is good. What are you puffin? Ever been in a hospital? Had surgery performed? The bad doctors are protected by the current system. When their incompetent ways catch up with them they just move to another location then continue screwing more trusting patients. You are not permitted to search a grassroots database on a doctors reputation. The hospitals act like they are god. Their only real concern is that you can PAY.
Quote[/b] ] why don't the drug companies take the money that they spend to run those STUPID ads on TV, and lower prices?
Because it works, its how they make their huge profits, and the lower the IQ and age level targeting sells their product best. Some of the drug commercials don't even tell you what the pretty purple pill is for...you are encouraged to "ask your doctor". (another appt for them too).
I agree the lawyers need to be controlled but that is a commonly held belief, the medical industry seems to be immune to complaint.
A very good friend of mine's mother is permanently in need of continuous medical and nursing care. After so many months much of the coverage she has expires. There is a significant estate that will well be exhausted because of the way the system is set up. BTW: My friend is a W supporter and voter. When he moans about his family's estate being eaten up by health care bills I tell him its right up his alley with his beloved prez W.

I'm confused,it would appear from the comments on this board that what we need to satisfy the public is a complete dunce, who has no experience at anything.

If we have an oil problem and the president has experience in that area then he must be a crook. In my twisted way of thinking, if he was experienced in the field he could understand the problem and stay on top of it.However the demand is for some one who has not the slightest clue as to what is going on.

That is the part that is confusing, but it does explain why our educational system is so poor, they are cranking out the leaders of tommorrow.

Maybe this whole thing is a long term scheme (we all love conspiracies) to reseat the Democrats in office, they seem to have the largest number or people that qualify in meeting the public demands. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Don't get all excited, VNP or LEI, I'm not responding to AAO directly.

Merely a tactical shift on AAO's part. He'll try this for awhile, get a few toadies to pick up on it, then abandon it when it ultimately doesn't work.

You nailed it with your "Repeat it enough and it becomes the truth" comment.

Did anyone else notice the article yesterday about how Chevron and Exxon are competing for China's growing oil business?

Hmmm... Remember that the oil in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge, where we will soon be drilling the caribou, cannot be economically shipped to our seaports on the gulf coast because our oil tankers won't fit through the Panama Canal, and that the nasty Democrats have prevented the poor, near-bankrupt, suffering oil companies from building new refineries all over California, in spite of the multi-billion dollar tax cuts they were granted a few years ago to make that happen?

Let's see - oil in Alaska. Eager customers with money and empty refineries in Asia. Eager customers with money and no refineries in USA. Who will the oil be sold to? Chevron and Exxon can't decide what to do. They're torn between profits and patriotism. I guess they'll just have to do what's right for their stockholders...

And yet, the daily talking points from Republican Central keep coming out about how drilling in ANWR will supply America's oil needs for the next 17 years.

Are you feeling dumbed down yet?

K7ABF here is one of the moderators of that forum, he's promised to approve you for membership. Just drop him a PM with your username.

So, how about it? Feel up to walking into the lions' den, or are you gonna wimp out and stay away from those with differing opinions?

(p.s. You can reply to this message without losing your other challenge.)

Close, but no cigar. The Sherman of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was John Sherman, Senator from Ohio. He was William Tecumseh Sherman's brother.
Hey, Albert:

The only way to deal with trolls is to limit your reaction to reminding others not to respond to trolls.

No, not everyone, but 7B, WK, and EP are definitely on my short-list of trolls.
I dunno man... #Guess it's my curse to be able to see both sides of the equation and try to find the truth that hides somewhere inbetween.

I disagree with about half of what I read here, but learn because of it, not in spite of it. #It's good to get the opinions from the left as well as the right because there's some truth in all of it.

Likewise, I know a troll when I see one, and 7B, WK and EP don't qualify. #Shooting from the hip does not a troll make. #For that matter, UEY is starting to make sense here, rigid as he is.

This is a response to Rob.

That's a typical tactic employed by the intellectually narrow minded. Some here can't handle being responded to directly with an opinion differing from their own, so they resort to this kind of nonsense.

Dave WX7B
Well, I'm not going to get into what I really think as it would violate the spirit of things here.

To AAO's credit, he's good at research and has a keen memory. What I've wanted to say to AAO for a long time is this:

God gave you a real talent and He meant you to use it for good. (Strong words coming from an athiest!) I feel sorry for those who can't even see a little bit of the other side. This is known as compassion. And at 39, maybe the mold is cast. I hope not. There is nothing wrong with being right sometimes, but how you handle it is everything. Christian? Not in this world. It's funny how the most obvious Christians aren't.

As far as QRZ is concerned... I think it's been two days now since I read SY's "tedious load" comment in another thread. People at work think I'm nuts because every time I think of it, I bust out laughing. 'Nuff said there.

Anyway, AAO can join humanity if he chooses. But at this point, I am violating his own rule.

I do believe I've been insulted. Are you implying that I am sub-human?

Perhaps I will take a page out of 7B's book and demand an apology.

I figure that was a personal insult.

However, I won't go the way of so many here and report it to the mods. If they find it on their own and want to do something about it, that's their decision.

Oh, by the way: I forgive you.

Love to have all the brilliant oil experts who think Bush and Halliburton are the cause of the world's problems come on over to the Coulter forum!

All those rich Republicans (although that doesn't explain the fact that there are more rich Democrats in Congress than there are rich Republicans, but we wouldn't want to let the facts get in the way of a good rant. #Well, maybe not a good one, just a well-used and poorly-documented one) boy, what evil people they are.

Come on over! #They're bored over there! #Address to the board is in my signature line if anyone's interested in debate rather than just one-sided slams. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Gee, ya can't even forgive someone around here.

By the way, can anyone point out to me where I ever suggested that someone needed to "join humanity?"

Hey, here's a crazy idea, maybe try discussing the issue instead of your pre-conceived notions of each other. Just a thought.

Ann Coulter!!?? Oh Chr*st.

How about Ann Coulter & Condoleezzey on one team and Hillary & Barbara Boxer (super jew) on the other side of the debate? Talk about a sh*t fest. They'd produce enough manure in 10 minutes to enrich the entire worlds crop yields for the next 500 years.
