View Full Version : eHam speak with forked tongue!

eHam is running a Speak Out piece on the potential deregulation of amateur radio in the UK. I accused them of not running the actual news story about this which, as it turns out, was something I simply overlooked. I was wrong. Within hours, I received the following from one of eHam's editors, "If you are going to criticize in the future I highly suggest that you get your facts straight first to avoid looking like a fool."

I made a mistake. They were right. I will also admit that I have, at times, been less than kind to others who have made errors in their postings, so I can not say that I was not totally undeserving of that response. On the other hand, eHam solicits visitors to their web site for money. I can appreciate that it costs money to run a site like that.

If I call someone a fool, then it is just my opinion. I would think that it is probably not a smart business move to call someone a fool out of one side of your mouth and ask them for money out of the other side.

Since I am a fool in the eyes of eHam, then if I donate to eHam at some time in the future, then I guess one might say that only a fool would send money to eHam!

So the editor at Eham was correct and you were in the wrong, should you not post that fact on Eham, what is the point of posting it on QRZ?? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Maybe only a FOOL would donate money,
But only a MAN would stand up and say he was wrong!!

I did post it on eHam that I was wrong.

I know it is a free country and they can say anything they want. I just question the wisdom of calling someone a fool and then expect them pay for the privilege!

Thanks eHam for keeping the 'amateur' in amateur radio.

YES,but they were right!! Is it politically incorrect to make a true statement nowadays?? Is that the level that Society has dumbed down to ?? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

It really sucks when the tables are turned, don't it?

You have a rare oppertunity to learn a valuble lession here. Take the lesson and move on. I am not sure I see reason for complaint here. They were right, you were wrong, you publicly admitted your mistake, and life goes on. Good luck.

If events at Harvard University are any indicator, then the answer is yes.

Again (shudder) I am compelled to agree with Orv. You were wrong. They did not call you a fool, they merely pointed out the you were making yourself look a fool.

A man would stand up and, as Spike Lee might put it, "do the right thing."

Perhaps YOU owe eHam the apology?

How many more times do I have to say it. I already admitted I was wrong.

I don't mind being called a fool by someone, especially when I am wrong. I am pretty thick skinned and it all pretty much rolls off my back.

My objection to being called a fool is that it was done by someone who expects me to pay for that privilege.

I think that by coming to another forum and making a fuss you are being foolish.

I'm still trying to figure out the subject line. Why do they owe you an apology? Why do they speak with forked tongue when their tongue was correct?

Sounds like what comes around goes around to me. Both fourms can yeild a wealth of information. Its sad that we have to put up with "un-intelligent" debate, flaming, and down right putting people down for asking questions or posting opinions. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you can dish it, well, you need to learn to take it.

The way it works is that if you have ever criticized another post or pointed out what you believe mistakes in either facts or logic, and maybe being a bit sarcastic about it, You are fair game.

If you ever have something wrong in a post you will probably hear about it.

I have been on both of ends of it and have worn out a few flamproof suits.

Laugh it off and roll with it.

The more you add a layer, thicker is the foolish coat. At a point it will prevent you from moving and later breathing.

It is better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt!

Whoever said that, be it Franklin, Lincoln, or Clemens, never saw the day when one would open a browser to remove all doubt.

From what I can remember, it was a Mark Twain quote, and a great one it is at that.

He also had a quote something along the lines of

When the sun is shining a bank will come offer you an umbrella, but as soon as it starts to rain he will take it back.

No truer words have ever been spoken. I have a lot of personal experience with that one.

I guess everyone is saying ... Ok you feel bad both coming and going at Eham... #"Get over it!"

Life goes on!

I will add this in your favor... Eham does treat its website visitors (Customers) like crap... But that is their right.... if theyw ant to drive away customers paying or non paying that is their business...

Not that I would come to the defense of E-Ham as I do not patronize that site, but they may treat their customer like crap, but they also are aware that a large percentage of them have been banned from the 1st Class sites and are willing to tolerate the treatment having no other place to go.

When all the donated bucks are put in the same barrel it is difficult to tell the good ones from the bad ones, and they all spend at the same value!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

I tried this once before, but it was like throwing a goat turd at a speeding Peterbuilt. But I will try one last time:

If you again read what you quote from them, paying attention to the words they ostensibly wrote you, they are not calling you a fool.

They were merely pointing out to you the wisdom of Honest Abe's oft-quoted aphorism: "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. "

Get the difference?

Hi guys,

Ah, calm down already and remember "a fool and his money are soon parted". OK, we all play the fool sometimes, I have seen plenty of poppenjays and have been one myself, ONCE. (;->)

I can see how it happened, you have seen the UK post here, the very same word for word all over the Internet and it's NOT official. It's simply someone's knee-jerk reaction replete with silly suppositions and "futurist" remarks, rabble rousing propaganda designed to further a personal agenda.

If there IS any press release from Ofcom, the RSGB or RA I have yet to see one, maybe I'll check out eHam to satisfy my morbid curiosity. Meanwhile Idonshivagit about the doomsayers.

Just my tuppence worth as usual.

Gadzooks! What a cynical thought. Would you suppose that folks around here would actually DO such a thing?

Why, the very idea takes my breath away.
