Last week I heard someone on a local repeater (irlp) talking with someone in south africa. He asked her for a qsl card. She stumbled for a few seconds and finally agreed. I guess to each his own, but it just seemed rather odd to me.

Does that count towards DXCC for 2m band? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Yes, you can get cards. They don't count for anything, though. I often send them, particularly if it's a 'first QSO'. But I prefer to send eQSLs for Echolink QSOs.

No problem, as long as it's labeled for what it really is.
Some people, after all, just like to get cards, and couldn't care less about awards.
Of course, if someone actually tried to pass off that card as confirmation of a QSO for DXCC purposes, he should be banned from the program for life.

Although I would have not intrest in getting cards from ECHOLINK IRLP contacts, I can see how some may want to. Everyone may have their own select idea of what this hobby is. Just becouse the person may never be able to apply for an award does not mean that he would not like to hang something on a wall becouse after he met and chatted with a station that was DX. Granted, it will be hard getting the cards (hihi) but if its an SASE and I was requested, what the heck.

In essence, there is no difference. I would, and have sent swl listeners qsl cards in the past for their reception reports. I have no problem with that since it is 100% radio. I'm really trying not to knock irlp because it can serve a useful purpose, but if I guy wants a qsl card because he worked a station with 4 miles of radio connection, and 5000 miles of internet connection, I think the guy needs to get a real life. Besides that, he didn't even offer to send a SASE.

I have a lot of QSL cards, never cared for an award.
Furthermore even without cards I like to check and record the countries and the prefixes worked, for my own pleasure... I have nothing to prove to others.
If this guy wants to have his QSL card from an echolink contact, and the other one agreed, good for them. Personally, beeing asked, I think I would refuse though. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

A few years ago I worked Taiwan with aol instant messenger, and an old IBM thinkpad. Conditions were perfect though, so I am sure I would have to be pretty lucky to bag him again. The scumbag never sent me a qsl card though, so I don't think I will ever get any credit for the contact, but it is still nice to know that my old computer was really getting out. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

After 30 years of hamming I had never worked a CP station on a voice mode, so I went to Cochabamba, stopped at the radio club and worked about a dozen one evening. Only one gave me a QSL card, though. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Simple. Send him an Internet QSL and let him print it out on his nickle.

Now for the bad news.

You can be dead solid certain that the following will happen:

1) Some bogus "organization" will start a DXCC-like program for Internet-type QSOs.

2) They will charge at least $25 for the certificate.

3) They will make out like bandits.

4) Some "I don't wanna learn the code" bottom-feeder will take the bait, buy the award, hang it on his wall and brag about it right here on QRZ.

The ONLY instant messenger that counts towards an award is YAHOO IM. #All of the others are not recognized. #Nice try though.

Still waiting for my latest state contact QSL card on IM to download...Must be a BMP! #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Hey Orv, wanna set a sked for voice chat on YAHOO a week from next month? #Still need your street in CA.

I must be losing it, I had too much fun with this one...

Sorry Charlie,I think Yahoo is the first to ban me from use. When I log on it tells me that is not acceptable #you must register first. So I tried to register, and it tells me I can not register as I am already registered. I went through all the "Have you forgotten your password" thing it tells me that name and pass word has already been used, tried a new one, to no avail, even sent them E-mail which they did not take the time to acknowledge.
Some of the self appointed LIDS on QRZ ask why I have not been banned for not meeting their standards, well it looks like Yahoo beat them to it,BANNED by DEFAULT !!

why not? I have. And I've enjoyed every one of the cards I got.

I would hope that if the dingaling turned the ZS card in for an award, the card checker notices that US to ZS wasn't likely on 2m. But then again, who knows.

Hi Humble in Texas and SWLs,

I have been asked for QSL on repeaters but never having used IRLP or whatever that computer driven thing is except for a brief test I haven't encountered any "DX" requests. I only QSLed one guy on a repeater during a fantastic band opening but only because he knew the score. Still the repeater was included in the info as "via". A few others were politely denied with explanation.

I consistently see "CQ" on the packet BBS and ignore them. With all the forwarding between nodes and the message finally being stored until being listed with the <L> command and displayed using the <R (message number)> command it's like some I have seen asking for QSL. OK, it's pretty obvious I read the message loud and clear (or clearly visible) but do I give a signal report to the local packet BBS station???

Some have a VERY strange idea of what Amateur Radio is, some think they can QSL the Internet. Then there was the TOPPER, an IRLP contest! Now I wonder who won the trophy, the statuette holding a telephone receiver to it's ear.

With international telephone calls going for pennies a minute I wonder why repeaters are so equipped. Oh, I know, so they can call it RADIO. (;->)

Oddly enough it works LOTS better than a cell phone.
