I have read about the D-54 mod on QRZ.
Can anyone tell me what is accomplished by removing
"D-54"?

It opens up the ability to transmit outside the ham bands. Good idea for MARS work. Very bad idea for anything else.

It is good for getting to the 60 meter band and being able to transmit.

That is true. I stand corrected. Ditto for CAP frequencies, which I should have mentioned. But I also stand by the comment about operating outside the ham bands except for MARS and CAP use.

Of course, I also think freebanders should be taken out and shot, but that's another issue.
