Check out this now closed E-bay auction!! Item Number: 5750057681

An old Drake TR-4CW (RIT) that sold, yes, sold for $3050!

In the words of Mr. Hand from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", "What are you people,....on dope?"

I can understand something being a "collector quality item", but get real.....

You know, I find it interesting that the same "Buyer" has bought stuff from this same seller in the past history. Makes one wonder.

However nice the radio is, it isn't worth $1000 as it stands.

I just got done reading through the bid history and the buyer's profile. It looks like the biding was on the level but this makes you wonder if a new term should be coined:
'Ebay lemming'
In all honesty, I can see where someone with money to burn would try to recapture the days of their youth, but this goes too far.

"Hey Hank...lookit what I bought!"
"Passed up that IC-781, but lookie here, got me a spankin clean TR-4!"

What's wrong with this picture? Hi.

Oh well, if someone has money to burn, have at it. I don't and wouldn't be that lame.

Another person bought a MiracleWhip antenna for more than a new one cost. It was sold as is and had a dent in the case. I have put up electronics for sale on e-bay and never been dissapointed.

I sold a VOM meter for more than a new one would cost. I also got yelled at by a ham , via e-mail, that wanted to know how I could start the bid on a radio at 20 dollars. He implied I must have stolen it. After I blocked him from bidding I answered his e-mail. I told him that I hoped it would not sell for twenty dollars but if it did then somebody got a great deal. Needless to say I got more than I had paid for the radio than what I had paid fot it used. I also had used it for three years so I was very happy.

And if you check into the auction all parties involved are from Ohio.... Really makes one wonder why someone would pay that much for a radio that sells every week on eBay for around $500.00 on average.

Yep, it sure does!

I have noticed though that items on E-Bay sell higher then on normal venues like QRZ.COM, QTH.COM, etc.

I think some individuals have a need to "win" something over others, kinda like the guy at hamfests that puts in raffle ticket after raffle ticket to win a $5 ARRL log book and then thinks it is some major winning!

Who knows. I just know I won't spend that kind of money for a run of the mill radio.

If I did, my wife would have me committed! (Rightfully so!).

Crack is cheaper. I've been seeing this on e-Bay a lot lately. I was looking at the manual typewriters a few weeks ago. All the bidders had 0 to 4 bids and the pattern seemed to suggest they were upping the bids... the same people were bidding on all the machines and most had won on 2 or 3 others already...

Still $3050 is rediculous!

And the really interesting part is this TR4CW was without power supply ..

Yep, the power supply and speaker were available. For $600.

I didn't check to see what they went for. But it was at $600 last time I looked two days ago.

I was watching this auction, and the one for the power supply. The last I looked the supply was close to $700. Of course it was housed in the MS-4 Speaker cabinet.

I saw a Henry desk amp that was worth about $500 or so sell for $1300 about 2 months ago. All they said is that it worked, and no warranty.
Great for the seller.

I'm sorry, but to me, it just seems totally ridiculous. Even if an item were a part of your history, a radio you had once as a young ham, no where is something worth that kind of money. I have to believe someone either has too much money on hand or are just a bit unstable.

Either way, the ebay Seller sure made a profit. I can safely bet he/she didn't pay anywhere near that amount getting the unit to start with.

Even an IC-781, new in the box, wouldn't fetch that kind of return.

I would rather spend it on a great antenna/tower system, rather then something behind a case to stare at. I prefer hands on!

Wow... Makes one wonder...

I do know I used to see NEW in BOX ICOM 2100H mobiles sell for well over $250.00 on ebay when I bought mine from a Local Radio Store (for $129.00) New in box never opened...

I guess at the time I should bought all they had and sold them on Ebay....

If you look at the bid history and the way the bidding went, you might smell a rat.

I had a brand new TR4-CW with RIT and noise blanker in 1978. It was a beautiful rig that I purchased from a 89 year old SK hams wife. I think I paid $ 500.00 for it and it was, brand new.

I'm just not that nostalgic...

ebay used to be a good deal, but now it's just entertainment value...

there's nothing on ebay i can't get somewhere else for a lot cheaper...

i really get a good laugh out of some of the ham gear sales! but of course, this is also reflected in the tail-gating i've been to in the last two years...

nope, ebay is all about the seller, NOT the buyer!

I think ebay is no more then a raffle. Some individuals just want to "win" something over others and it becomes an addiction. I too have noticed that you can purchase good equipment off QRZ.COM or other sites definitely cheaper then off e-bay which frequently states caveats such as "with any equipment this age, the item is sold as-is" or "I have no way to test it" and the stuff is being sold by amateurs. Yeah, right. Smells fishy to me too.

If someone is stupid enough to plunk down $3K for a TR-4, have at it. You won't see me in the winners circle!

" I have no way to test it " problably means they should take it to a friend home ( if they actually HAVE any real friends ) to check it out.

That is part of the problem, many individuals have the stuff laying in a basement corner and then sell it with the caveats:

1. #No way to test it (yet they are amateur ops)
2. #Worked last time I used it and has been in storage since (yeah, powered up back in 1952).
3. #Was working before I shipped it
4. #An "engineer" friend or broadcast engineer went through it (so it must be good!)
5. #As-Is (which means he knows it doesn't work)
6. #May need a little alignment or tweaking (means it probably quit working a long time ago).

And so it goes!

my favorite e bay listing was
a
KWM 2
seller stated that tubes and lamps lit
but could not test radio
as he did not have the power supply

so how did he light the tubes if
he did not have a power supply

I've bought and sold on eBay. On occasion you find a deal. If your a seller, eBay is the way to go! I was a member of eBay BEFORE they went public. Before the IPO, and the advertising eBay was fair for both seller and buyer. Since the IPO, eBay became a real sellers paradise. My wife started selling childrens clothes about the time of the IPO, she pulled in $3000 profit the first month. Unfourtinately she couldn't keep that steam going, but still does well.

Has anyone here ever rented a hamfest table just to setup a 50/50 raffle http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
