There was a verrrrrry long thread on this same subject a few months back. Sentiment was about 95/5 against, if that helps.

In reality you should be very careful about wearing a HAM badge. There are those psychotic's running around on the streets who take pleasure in putting down" the man". You sprouting a badge make another target for him to shoot at.
Amateur Radio is NOT LAW ENFORCEMENT!!

Ha ha..yeah I just shared the link for the sake of fun (you guys remember what fun is??..or are you all to old? ) I wouldn't buy one..hense the sarcastic "anyone wanna buy me one?" comment. I thought it was kinda funny, indeed the last thing we need is a bunch of Hams running around pretending to have authority, they already do that without shields!!
As far as AB3BK's comment about me being a Dork..well, I am!! Come on..I just finished my Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology...if THAT is not dorkish..i don't know what is!!!
DORK and proud! I guess you can call me Dr. DORK.

Have fun guys..Gud DX to all.

73 de Carl (w2cdr..in case you forgot my call).

Great, now the self declared "Band Cops" will have badges. What's next, little sirens and flashing lights to put on handhelds when making a "Citizens Arrest" on bad operators?

As I have said before.. The Ham Badge is really not a good idea. I wear a "ham badge" but it does not look anything like a Law Enforcment bage.. its just a name tag..

Don't need one and expose myself to needless laughs and exposure on sites like Hamsexy.

It's a sign that states, "Look at me, I'm a dork!" http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I know you guys are kidding around, but it's strictly business (IMHO).

I think I know someone that would buy it. He used to go to all the Atlanta area hamfests wearing a metal hardhat with a mobile antenna mounted in the top. I guess he liked being able to look at the tables of stuff with no one getting to close to him. Hi Hi.

AH--

Don't knock the metal hard hat with the antenna on it. It works a whole lot better than the 'rubber dummy load' that came with your HT. Sure, you'll get some stares and sarcastic comments, but you'll talk farther than the average ham with his 'duck'. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

k4ah

I agree that it will work better than most ducks. I don't know very many hams that use the original duck, most replace them quickly. I guess the thing that got me was that while I worked at UNIDEN America we did some studies on near field effect of mobile antennas. Guess where the largest concentration of near field was. Bingo right under the antenna and metal it was attached to. In this persons case right where the brain should have been.

This was also a hamfest that two fellow hams turned the pl tone on on their handhelds so no one else could hear their personal comments. Needless to say they made a lot of "friends" that day.

It was one of those days where they came out of the woodwork.

Hi guys,

Yeah, wearing that badge can get you killed. Now what's this about a hard hat with an antenna? Back in my CB days a friend and I went to a CB Haloween party, he was dressed as a GI complete with backpack radio, an old tube type CB and motorcycle battery in a rucksack. Mounted in the helmet was a set of headphones with a short, loaded antenna on top. He was in the process of asking road directions as we walked across the parking lot and just as we got to the club table where the radio was he said "thanks" and signed off. The operator looked up just as he said it and the whole place cracked up. BTW, he won first prize for the most creative costume!

Now pray tell how can using PL prevent someone from listening to transmissions? They made a lot of "friends" because they couldn't hear others screaming at them for the QRM. They should do like we do, use PL on some lower frequency (not in the weak signal sub band) so we don't QRM while blocking all the crap from nearby HTs.

where were you guys in the late 70's, early 80's when this badge idea first surfaced?

I recalled ads in 73 magazine and I stopped subscribing to that at about issue #230.

I do not recall any righteous indignation then.

Would I buy one?? WHAT ARE YOU NUTZ? I'm not a REACT member.

Yes they weren't exactly the brightest bulbs in the pack. Took a while to convince them everyone could hear them.

I never liked 73 magazine because of the editor. It is also easier to bitch about stuff on the net. Hi Hi. I never thought about it at the time because I was wearing a real badge at that time.

I have a badge and the 40 automatic to go with it. Any ham who wears that badge is a fool. It's called a "target."

Idiots abound.

Man what a hornets nest!! Oh well! Might as well throw in my nickles worth.
Ham badges are NOT a good idea for reasons stated before,i.e. wackos popping caps at anyone wearing shiney metal objects on their shirt.
As a Search and Rescue team member we have ID tags with our pertinent info to identify us to the authorities. No way I'm going out in the woods with a gold badge on and run across a meth lab operator with a grudge against the law. Same line of reasoning, our squad does not wear cammo or black"swat" style clothes either.
Kahki pants and a polo or chambry shirt with club logo and a plastic enclosed ID tag looks more"professional anyway.
