Here (http://www.arrl.org/news/enforcement_logs/2005/0123.html) are the letters for the period ending January 23, 2005.
Not much in this batch, an Extra getting his tail chewed for some on-air threats, a couple of repeater problems, and, way down at the bottom W5YI-VEC has a recall of some of their examinees... again!
That's why I am a VE thru ARRL-VEC and not W5YI. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Of all the re-examination orders I've seen, even on the FCC website, almost all have been accredited by that same VEC. I can remember only one case otherwise. Definite integrity problems, but that's really no surprise to me. Smoke..fire, etc.

I looked into both ARRL and W5YI when I decided to become a VE. W5YI's standards are very lax... in fact, they're pretty much non-existent. ARRL's standards are a good deal tougher.

Well, I met W5YI in person once, and he tried to recruit me into his group by bad-mouthing the League, though he is a life member. #Overall, I got a very bad impression of him. #And his subsequent behavior further reinforced that impression. #[I won't speak further of it since I don't want to turn this into a bash] #Suffice to say, when I became a VE, I also got certified through ARRL.
And if that Extra really made threats, bootlegged a call or used a false call, he should lose his license. If true, he gets no sympathy from me.
W5YI testing should have ben banned a long time ago. There have been numerous instances of "irregularities".
I know that Riley is fed up with it from some of the articles I have read in the past.
Feds should have retained that responsibility a long time ago.

Amen... sounds like his Extra is "extra-strong lid tendencies." http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I took my test through a W5YI affiliated group, and saw no real difference from the ARRL affiliated group I took element 3 with.
Has to be a regional thing..

WHQ, investigate what it takes to become a VE with each, and you will see a marked difference.
My dad is a VE for W5YI and ARRL.. here W5YI is very popular. .and I have taken all my tests wth the local group who are VE's with W5YI.
The VE's through W5YI are not bad around here. Tho I understand that its takes more to become a VE through ARRL, being a W5YI VE helps. There was no exam fraud at the testing session I went to. Also because the general and extra exam both cover some questions on being VE. Its not like the W5YI is bad in not making hams do an open book review. Most hams should know the rules. Also what is to keep hams through ARRL who do the open book review from commiting exam fraud. Its not like they are not aware of what they are doing.

Please don't group all of the W5YI examination teams into the "corrupt" category. #Its all a matter of integrity. #Dow and Darlene Pierce (WA4HMX & AC4VE) ran a W5YI team here in Richmond a few years ago when they lived here. #I was a part of that team, and these two made sure that everything was done precisely by the book. #We did sessions monthly, always booked full (36-40 folks testing), and there was never any hint of a problem.
I have plenty of bad stuff to say about the ARRL, but it's counter-productive, and is bad for the hobby in general. #If you have specific information about irregularities concerning ANY VE team, its best to report it, not air it out here on QRZ.
It's a pity that some here spout their juvenile delinquent playground rhetoric so as to categorize all members of a particular group into a single definition.
I am happy that I did not have to drive to Norfolk to take my examinations when I was working through the ranks back in the early 90's.

Luke
I will agree with Luke on everything, except his comments on the ARRL. The W5YI is a good VE group, and has helped license thousands of amateurs. Of course like I said, when I turn 18 I will be VE for both ARRL and W5YI..
