I bet that for the next couple of months, all of her mail is going to be re-addressed to the "Perky Katie Couric".

The postal service has forgotten what they were like before FedEx and UPS came along. I haven't forgotten.

Two years ago I mailed some books by parcel post from Oregon to Arizona, then rushed there to wait for them. Six weeks later they arrived. They must have gone the lonth path?

Their comments about the hard working people at the USPS and their commitment to service is the biggest crock I have ever heard.50 yrs or so ago, my family lived on a RFD postal route and had the same mailman for as long as I could remember until he retired and then another fine man took his place. We could count on the mail being there every day at the same time no matter what the weather. If there were packages, either of the men would drive up our driveway and hand deliver it. about 15 yrs ago, we had a mailman here that delivered to our house in town. One winter I got this nasty note from this bozo stating that until I cleaned the snow from the area in front of my mailbox, he would no longer deliver mail into that box. The problem was the area he was talking about is a city street and this bozo is delivering from a 4 wheel drive jeep. I had an interesting talk with this jerk's boss at the local postal station. This was just latest and last salvo from him in a long standing feud which started when someone backed over my mailbox and knocked it down. First he complained about my 'rickety' mail box and said no more delivery until I replaced it. It was about -20 and we had probably 2' of snow on the ground when I got this little note. His boss agreed with me that it could wait until spring. Then when I replaced it the next spring I got another note refusing delivery because it wasn't exactly even with his jeep window. I remeasured the height and distance from the curb and reassured myself it was well within USPS specs. After another little talk with his boss, he started delivering mail to my house again. Though it got to be impossible to get any packages any bigger then a single book delivered to the house. The last straw was the note about cleaning a city street myself. Over the years I have not seen much improvement in our delivery even though the man I had so many problems with is long gone. I can't remember the last time our mail came even close to the same time 2 days in a row. The last time we had a heavy snow, and it wasn't all that heavy compared to some storms, we got no mail for 2 days. Hardly a week goes by without receiving one of our neighbor's mail or someone comes over with some of ours.

Going Postal obviously means a whole lot different thing to the USPS per their letter to Perky Ms Newshound then it does to me.

Here is an idea, stop trying to be a business and start being a service again. Stop wasting money on printing designer stamps and collectables, stop sponsering athletic teams and events and go back to the business of providing basic postal service as cheaply and efficiently as possible. Amazing that every time they raise rates to 'improve service' or add new services, the quality of the service they provide goes down.

I dislike Mz Perky as about as much as any body on tv right now but I certainly think she was not the misinformed or misguided individual in this.

N0KLT,

A few years back several postal workers, in the Chicago area, were injured while delivering mail on their walking routes. These workers have sued and won large cash settlements.

Since then, at least the Illinois postal service, has had a policy that if the owner of a mail box does not remove the snow from around the box they don’t have to put mail in it.

Also since then I have personally been clearing the snow from several of my older neighbors mail boxes. Usually for no pay. {some of them insist on paying me even when I refuse, they don’t want to feel they owe me anything.}

I moved from the city to the "country", I have a rural mailbox even though the houses here are actually CLOSER together than the house in the city...

I do not get mail when the motorhome is parked on the street. The reason, they SAY they are NOT ALLOWED TO BACK UP! To be able to reach out of the car/van/jeep, they have to pull up close to the back of the motorhome, open the mailbox, insert arm, deposit mail, withdrawl arm, and back up about 4 feet. That part is against postal regulations. My post office is a long distance call from me... but the postmaster's BOSS is not, so for about 10 days a year, he gets a call from me. I guess they have pull thru parking spaces at the post office.

When it snows, we are required to make access to the mail box, that is if we want our mail... the mail lady is not allowed to exit the car/van/jeep, so I always make a path to the mailbox, until the county comes along with a snow plow and covers my clear patch of street. Results in another phone call to the postmaster.

I have a love/hate relationship with the post office, mostly hate.

Postage is still really only 5 cents per ounce, it stays at 5 cents because of all the money savings machines... what adds to the cost of a stamp is all those STORAGE costs.

OUR mail is promptly delivered any time between 10 am and 6 PM at nite. The exception was when my neighbor found my mail in the street by his drive way, covered with tire tracks where the cars had been driving over it.

Under President Carter, I wrote to the Postmaster General suggesting a standard size stamp, which would reduce cost. I got a reply saying they were making too much money from the collectors to change any thing, besides they were not that interested in the mail delivery, only the money from the stamp collectors.

I think Ms Couric and I share the definition of the term "going Postal". # # # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Our postal "address" at the farm kept changing over the years. Rural Route 2, RFD 3, Star Route, RD2 box 1, then they went to "street numbers", 1735 Farmer Road, then it was 1866 Farmer Road. Post office sent a note saying they couldn't find the house. My dad sent them back, well, he's lived in the same farm house for 80 some years, the house hasn't moved, sounds like the post office has a problem with changing route names.
So far over the years we've been lucky with good courteous route drivers, they'll come up the driveway with packages and anything.

lucky dude!

I live in a township that has three zip codes and two served post offices. To drive to MY post office, I have to drive past at least TWO post offices.

When I complain to my congressman, I am told that "it would be too confusing to reassign zip codes, and too expensive to change stationary". What he is really telling me is "people over in Liberty Township are too stupid to handle the change".

I have found one thing, If I really want to create hate and discontent within the postal service, since it is a toll call to call my post office, I can call the USPS 800 number and demand the place the call for me. This brings a lot of attention to my problem.

YS,

Living in a small town.. with one small post office.. its so easy.. In fact I know the postmaster and the women who works at the counter. I guess I am in there mailing stuff way too often. Or buying stamps.. I was mailing some QSL cards and was talking to the postmaster about ham radio last time I was in there. He seemed pretty interested.

This was NOT a walking route. My mail box is an at the curb, sitting on a post at the proper level, deliver the mail from a vehicle window with no problems mail box marked that it meets USPS standards. This jerk wanted to cause trouble more then he wanted to do his job.

The walking routes in this town are few and far between. In fact the USPS people here are trying to convert a lot of areas to cluster boxes so that the carrier only has to deliver mail to the end of the block and in cases like my neighborhood where there are not any cross streets, some of us would walk about 3-4 city blocks to get our mail.

I clear sidewalks for a lot of my neighbors and some driveways also. Its not hard with a snowblower and some of them actually appreciate it.

KA9VQF

There is not a walking route in my area either. It is delivered by the postal worker {can’t call them mailman anymore even tho all but one of them are indeed male.} from those silly left hand drive jeeps. {they are not four wheel drive so I call them silly.}

Shortly after my father-in-law retired I quit clearing the snow over at his place. He bought a snow blower and was still able to do it himself. After one snow storm he had just finished when the city truck came by and put about a 1 foot roll of snow between curb and the rest of the street. He left it there.

This was also shortly after the #route delivery people had won their suite in Chicago. The new policy was in effect, but no one around here had heard about it. Instead of putting his mail in the box he got a note telling him that he had to do a better job of snow removal or they would not deliver his mail. He was however able to go down town to the post office and pick it up.

Now this note was put in his mailbox by the postal worker!

Not his mail, just the note. It was not in an envelope and had no postage on it. # #

By the time I got over there to chip the offending snow out of the way it was totally frozen. I have had an ongoing feud with the cities snow removal personal for years. I swear someone calls them and tells them when I have finished clearing my drive and they beat feet over here to bank it shut again.

I have my own snow blower and can still manage to run it when needed. I usually do all the driveways and sidewalks on both sides of my street and occasionally some not on my street, that are not done yet, since I’m out there anyway.

VQF,

Mercifully things are different here in Lincoln, Ne. The guy I had problems with was a single bad apple. I had a talk with the sub-station's assistant post master and that nonsense stopped. But I guess I wasn't the only person to complain. A few years later I got to know an assistant postmaster here in town fairly well and was telling him about this guy and he said he remembered the case and the guy. After a lot of complaints he was transferred to another substation here in town. He was given a job working the counter at the substation and not given a route. After several customer complaints, he was taken off the counter and given a job with no public contact. My understanding is that after fellow worker complaints and also other problems with management he was terminated completely. Guess there is a limit to how much you can screw up even at the USPS.
