Quote[/b] ]The ARRL has learned that 16-year-old Michael Braun, K3LNT, from Silver Spring, Maryland, is among the semifinalists in the Jeopardy! Sony Pictures television quiz show's "Teen Tournament," Wednesday through Friday, February 2-4. The program typically airs at 7 or 7:30 PM in most TV markets. A high school junior, Braun hold a General ticket, enjoys HF operating and is a member of the Montgomery Amateur Radio Club (MARC).

Well I personally know a fellow with a PHD in psychology,{not a ham} he drives the Miller beer truck locally.
I figure that if the whole college thing doesn’t work out he would still have the radio.
My own pitiful education level has worked against me a few times. The perspective employers sometimes feel that if they were to hire me I would leave as soon as a better job came available. Well duh! It wouldn’t matter what education level anyone had if a better job comes available they leave.

Then why make the comment regarding "young hams"?
You could have made some generic answer without "naming names". That wasn't the intent...
Remember, not everyone reads EVERY post on EVERY thread around here.
It was a legitimate question.

It's great for him, and for Amateur Radio. It gives him cash, and Amateur Radio publicity.

K3LNT was on 14.070 this afternoon; saw his QSO in progress, and thought I might shout a PSK "hey!" but he was too close to me and I could not reliably copy his signal, so I passed.
What is "wish him well."
http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I was indeed on 14.070 for a few hours this afternoon doing PSK31. I stopped after getting an American station that happens to be both portable Angola and /MM.. rarest combo so far. I couldn't hear you though - we must be a bit too close. You're only a 30 minute drive from my house.
Thanks for everyone's support-- I'm on Thursday Feb. 3 for the semifinals.

Well, Mike K3LNT, I just got done having a short QSO with you on 80m Hell. As I was writing your info down for the log, I thought the call sounded familiar. Sure enough, I had read this thread earlier about you. You are the biggest "celebrity" I've QSOed with so far. Hihi. Congrats on Jeopardy and the Angola contact. Oh yeah, you are my 2nd Hell contact and 2nd 80m contact. The guy I was talking to before you called me was the first for both those, W3BC. Had a good hour long QSO.
Thanks, yeah, hell is a fun mode. You were my third hell contact - did you really put your call on your head like that?

No, I used photoshop to make that image one day when I was taking a break between homework assignments. I wouldn't shave anything on my head unless there was a large sum of money involved or I was under the effect of mind-altering chemicals. hihi.
Hellschreiber is fun, and apparently does well in high noise, plus it is easier on the finals than PSK or RTTY. I used a half finished antenna in it's test position 25ft off the ground in the middle and 6ft off the ground at the ends and 20w output. Glad to be your 3rd contact. When I get another batch of QSL cards, I'll send one your way.

K3LNT has been on the North American Youth Net, and I talk to him from time to tim on AIM. Very nice guy! Too bad I missed him on TV. I wonder if he will have a recording to send me.

Well, I didn't want to spoil it for the rest of the people who didn't get to see it. It was a pretty cool competition between him and the other guy right at the end when both were within a few thousand of each other. Who won? He did. It was a good game. I forgot the girl contestant's name, but I felt really sorry for her. She was fighting back tears when the Double Jeopardy round ended and she was in the red and had to leave the game (she couldn't bet anything for the final jepardy question).
Good game, I'll be watching the finals for sure.

That was funny! She was the returning champion or something, but in the end dhe gets like -$5000. But, she still got $5000 and a computer! I wish I got that!

02-04-2005, 04:20 PM
It just goes to show you... you can know the right answer to a question, but if you aren't the fastest to push the button, you don't get to answer unless the other guy answered wrong. Ken Jennings said as much. He said it wasn't so much that he knew more than the others, he wast just the fastest to the buzzer.
Still, the semifinals, if you lost, you still won. $5,000 and a computer is a pretty big prize anyhow.

I asked him, and he said it was taped in October! The Jeoprady secret is revealed!
It's not exactly a secret...
I play next on Monday and Tuesday for a two game final. The score from each game is added for the total.
KC0KBH
02-07-2005, 12:31 AM
So, was that taped earlier, or do you go to the special jeoprady place to compete on Mon. and Tue.
It was all taped in late October. I actually had to take my Tech exam early because I found out I had to go and tape Jeopardy! later in the month. There's no special place - it's at Sony Studios in Culver City, CA.

Wow Mike! You did great today. I wish I had that kind of money. Right now I am scraping up every penny I have to get me a new laptop. Then comes the FT-817 when I work for my dad in summer. That brings up the question-
Do any hams ever not want to get something else big? It does not have to be ham related, ie four wheeler, snowmobile, tractor, lawn mower, etc.

02-09-2005, 05:12 PM
Yeah, I watched the other games also and enjoyed them. You did really good. I wish I had $75,000. Do you get 75k straight or is taxes deducted?
Either way, good job.
