View Full Version : Why do we as a society abbreviate everything?

I look around and notice more and more every day we're moving away from words and language toward abbreviations to the point where they are being used conversationaly. (other than the military)(and excluding ham abbreviations that came from cw) As a society are we becoming soo lazy or in a hurry we cant verbalize the whole word or name of something?
WTF do you mean?

But I have to admit that I do abbreviate sometimes usually; FU, WTF, SNAFU, RTFM ect.
AHHHH, the dreaded TLA.
FYI, MSFT lives by the TLA as does the DOD and especially NASA, only thing is, many are nolonger TLA's but are really extended and sometimes enhanced TLAs. Seems to me that everyone from POTUS down to the lowest PVT in the USA or USMC all speak TLA. Every NA on the WAN speaks in TLAs. As I look around, the WWW is also loaded down with TLAs too.

To answer the question: We are becoming a "keyboard" society. Abbv. due to need or want of speed typing. I've seen some people type faster than I can talk but of course, what do you expect from a 4 lander!

I wouldn't make the exclusion on Morse code abbreviations. Those all stem from the fact that code operators are either too lazy to spell out the whole word, or that the mode itself is too inefficient to do so in a reasonable amount of time. You don't find phone operators using abbreviations, except those who "know Morse".

They named them that because they aspire to be real cars.
Speaking of small unsafe underpowered pieces of crap, any body rememeber the Isetta. They had one door, in the front. It was amazing to see one pull up, and the driver open the whole front of the car to get out complete with the steering wheel which swung away with the door. People actually would drive the silly things.

...because most folks can not spell Federal Communications Commission, ( FCC )...or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI )...but I have had trouble spelling one word --- supercalifragilisticespelidocious ( from a Walt Disney movie !! )...was it ELI or ALIdocious ?
their refers to a person
there refers to a place/location
reel refers to a movie tape
real refers to something not imaginary
and so on
btw: what does NAACP mean ? I think I know what NCAA means, but not NAACP.
also what does NASCAR mean ? I guess the letters SC mean STOCK CAR , but not sure ... ?

"Their" actually refers to more than one person, or a group of people.
"His" or "her" refer to A person.
And I believe the spelling is: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

For many years there was a Messerschmitt in Clinton Iowa. It looked a lot like a small tail dragging airplane without wings.
It has three wheels the front ones did the steering. When first I saw it, it had motorcycle license plates on it. The last time I saw it, it had regular car plates. I always wondered why the state changed their mind on how to license it.
I haven’t seen it for the last few years, maybe they sold it.
My brother in law the ‘Birdman’ Turner had an Isetta that he restored and later traded for a Hillman which also restored and traded for some little P.O.C. Russian car. He likes to restore these weird things then get another to do.
I have serious doubts that he makes any money doing these things but like he said it keeps him out of the taverns. Finding parts is a real challenge but with the advent of the internet it has become much easier.
BTW congrats folks on another successful hijacking of a thread. We did it again!

messerschmidt sold that vehicle as an enclosed scooter .
some states considered it as such and some considered it as a car.
the morgan was dropped from production because it was very unstable and killed a lot of people.
the british government stepped in and forced it out of production.
the morgan was a two seat side by side with a canvas top, the messerschmidt was a fore and aft seater with a plastic aircraft type canopy.
the messerschmidt was powered by a small motorcycle type engine, it had a top speed of about 45-50 mph at best.
the morgan was much faster, one of the things that made it so dangerous.

I love your description of your daughter trying to describe those things. That says more about them then I could possibly say.
We had one of the small version of the Isettas in my home town in the early to mid 60's. It would be too much typing and space to relate all the fun we had with the car and the guy who owned it. This was the only one of the smaller versions I ever saw so I don't know if the engine was original or if another engine put in it. But the engine that was in this little version had a plate on it id'ing as some sort of washing machine engine. I want to say it was a Briggs & Stratton but it has been way too many years ago. There was a Shrine parade unit of the larger version Isettas in the mid 70's located in Knoxville, Iowa. This was long after that car had been banned from being driven on the streets and highways. The guys who owned them would trailer in the unit, usually 8 of them, unload them, drive them in the parade then as quickly as possible get them on the trailers again. Technically they should have been loaded on trailers right at the end of the parade route and not driven any place else other then on the parade route. Seeing a long goose neck car trailer being towed down the road with several dark red Isettas on board then finding another one right behind it is a strange strange sight.
