Maybe we need to start a thread where we tell the pro-CW folks to take the anti position, and vice versa... let each side play Devil's Advocate.
Might be fun... and it might grant a better insight into the "other" side.

Great idea!
I'm one of the biggest pro-code guys around and will be glad to go first.
Today, code is no more a serious mode of communication than smoke signals are. #The fact that people whose lives depend on communication #no longer even learn code (mariners, military members and airmen for example) shows that there is no real practical need for it anymore.
Code ability does not assure proper ham behavior either. #Many old timers, who really should know better, still exhibit liddish behavior on the air despite having passed the code test to get their licenses, . #By the same token, dedicated, conscientious newcomers who aren't even asked to pass more than a 5 wpm test at best, are unfairly accused of being "lightweights." #Furthermore, provided people have demonstrated sufficient knowledge to operate properly and not be a nuissance on the air, why should they learn a mode they have no intention of ever using?
Now, the truth is, I think these are all valid points, and I think they are all logically defensible.
I also don't think for a minute that code should be dropped as a requirement for a ham license. (My reasons have been expressed elsewhere).
Now how about it? Will one of the no-coders express honest reasons why he thinks code SHOULD be retained? #This isn't a trick or empty challenge. #I really am curious whether any part of the pro-code case makes sense or otherwise registers. #Seeing the other fellows point of view is always helpful in any debate -- or whatever this is.
73 and all the best,
Phil

The jokes around here seem to do better than the serious topics. (of course, there are exceptions.)
I guess that says something about amateurs in general... we tend to have lively senses of humor! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
How could I improve over the following no-code comments to the various petitions (direct quotes form FCC EFS comments).
Quote[/b] ]hello well i was readying about the pittion for elimitnating morse code from ham licens i would like to see it takken out like me and im sure there are others they just seem to have trouble learning and dont care to use it i only want to learn it becouse then i can use the bands that will open up with the general licsens
Quote[/b] ]It has been stated that CW is the most efficient form of radio communications. This is simply not true. CW requires a well trained operator to be effective.
Quote[/b] ]...while cw does have the ability to get through in an emergency when other, more complex modes do not, it is rarely used for that today. Rather, the requirement has prevented many potentially valuable and otherwise very interested people from entering the service. Those "missing" people are not interested at all to participate in emergency communications on ANY mode.
Quote[/b] ]I think (having to learn) Morse Code should be eliminated. I think Giving Technician licesnsees HF Priveliges will encourage learning.
Quote[/b] ] ...the majority of die-hards that want to keep the morse requirement for HF privileges may not be around in 10 years , but want to keep their HF bands clutter free while theyre still here and not worried about the future . ... we should not delete it altogether , keep the morse
code and digital modes sub-bands
Quote[/b] ]I feel that element (cw testing should be dropped all together. I do not agree
Quote[/b] ]Despite dropping the Element 1 test, it would be worthwhile to continue to provide an incentive for users to develop and maintain Morse skills.
Quote[/b] ]The mater stated in this RM also states "Lesons Learned from the Citizen Band"! The commission has learned from CB enforcment, when they de-regulate they save money!
Quote[/b] ]Of "sorts" a lot of "make up type" PARANOIA that the bulk of the non code Amateur Licneses are not going to get re-assignment of the band plans.
Quote[/b] ]Morse Code is gone, It will be gone worldwide by the end of next year. Give U.S. hams a Christmas present, NO element 1 after JAN 1, 2004
How can you fight that logic??
