"closest approach 32 million miles" My, I wouldn't sweat the small stuff ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Any chance we could send a space shuttle to the comet with some of our favorite people on it for a one - way trip ? ( purely for exploration )

Didn't a group of people try that a few years ago?
Oh, they were waiting for the UFO hidden behind the comet to pick them up.

Dudes once again you missed the comet. This is a once in a life time chance for you to achive ECE (Earth Comet Earth). Now what would be more fun to do,
cozy up with the OL or achive ECE?

this one must be an long delayed echo from the comet!
ece is possible! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
I'm just wondering what sort of accuracy your AZ-EL rotator would need to hit a target 32 million miles away?
Half a degree? Quarter degree? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

n3jja -- Good question. This sounds like one for the
guys at NASA or JPL.
Actually, unless you are using a very large dish antenna, I doubt seriously that you would have to get within closer than 5-10 degrees in order to "hit" the comet. However, since even the core of most comets is nothing more than "compressed vacuum" I doubt that you would get much of an echo at all !
The earth has passed through the tails of several comets, ( most famously, Halley comes to mind ) without observing any evidence whatsoever.
The typical size of meteors making up these showers is usually between that of a pea down to a grain of sand. It's the ionized trail in the upper atmosphere that causes the reflections noted on 6 meters and above, not the particles that constitute the comet, itself!

Tonight 12/10/04 I heard some meteor pings on 144.200 while my beam was pointed to the NE.
It looks like another CME could be brewing.
