911 Story (http://www.local6.com/news/3965273/detail.html)

You've gotta read this...

The entire Volusia County area lost 911 service for 6 hours today when an underground fiberoptic cable was cut.

so, whats new about this??

This happens far to often in some parts of (well, I won't say where, those that know already, know, and those that don't, don't need to know).

From coal trucks that miss turns and take out phone poles with those orange lables to disgruntled telco union members that use .308's to take out amps and splices.

And because this happens, the local EMA knows they can count on the hams and not the phone lines, not 911, and not the internet, and even thier own radio system because it has dead spots.

Yanno, time and time again, you can read the animosity in people's post. The people that look down on others for one reason or another.

I think I will take that QRZ vacation that was suggested to me, I'm g*******d sick and tired of seeing people put down for whatever reason or verbally "slapped around".

QRZ Vacation? You're d****d right... Except this time I think it'll be permanent.

K9STH:

Please remove me from the QRZ database entirely. I'm done trying to be nice only to get slapped in the face.

VPR:

I don't have that power. You need to contact either aa7bq@qrz.com or editor@qrz.com and ask them. However, since you are still in the FCC database all that they will probably do is to remove your posting privileges if you so wish.

They are just being their selves.

No need in leaving, just post less often. There will be times in the future when you will want to post a message, so leave that option open. There will be topics coming up you will WANT to contribute to, and in the coming weeks, you will want to wish all of us a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a week later, a HAPPY NEW YEAR, and so on into 2005.

Anthony, since my post is the only post in this thread that is on topic, I will assume you are talking about me.

I am not looking down on you or verbally slapping you around, sorry you feel that way, but I cannot help you.

No animus intended, none offered. I was pointing out to you, the fact that this is not a new phenomenon.

Your post should drive home to some that the telephone system is flawed, it can and does fail, and most importantly, to hams that think that Echolink or any other VoIP protocol will be there in an emergency

Was the offending post deleted? Surely you're not referring to YS' comments.

Anyway, take that vacation. After a while you'll find a QRZ hole in your life and want to fill the void. Easiest thing to do is to come back here. Come loaded for bear.

Still puzzled about what set VPR off like that.

By the way, who is supposed to be "punished" by having your name taken out of QRZ.COM's database?? Are you trying to punish people who work you on the air, and want to look you up to send a QSL?

The last group of people who threw a snit and asked to be taken out of QRZ.COM' database ended up forming a mentally challenged Web site called [insert a very bad word]qrz.com.

Just seems like a futile and spiteful gesture.

Not sure what it was, it may have been deleted or something.

We paid an extra $1.75 a month for a few years so the local phone company could pay for the 911 equipment here. When they finally announced the ‘roll out’ you could indeed call 911 and get cops. Unfortunately they were in Rockford Illinois. A fair distance form Savanna. In like six month we would get more local cops in Clinton Iowa. I’m not sure but I think now you get the sheriffs department in Mt Carroll Illinois.

In order to accomplish the 911 compatibility thing several local phone numbers had to be changed. Folks that had had the same number for years were changed, some without previous warning. Addresses had to be changed as well. Made for bad times for a while. It has finally settled down

When we got 911 service, there were big campaigns to get callers to dial 911. The phone company (Cincinnati Bell) took out all the police department telephone numbers in the phone book and replaced them with 911. So, if you wanted to call the police, and you did not know the phone number, you could only dial 911...

OK, now, there is such a load on the 911 system, that people are calling 911 for normal business, that the 911 system is overloaded... the cure ?? they want more money to expand the 911 system.

Try calling 911 on a cell phone in where I live in California and you will get the California Highway Patrol. If the nearest dispatch center is busy it will roll over to the next closest one. If that one is busy........

It's concievable that for the far remote north you could get a CHP dispatcher in the far south. A whole different world away.

ki4vpr the fact that 911 does not always work should come as no surprise to you or anyone else.
there are so many things that can go wrong with the telephone network that the truth is that we should be amazed that entire system works at all!

there are quite a few areas in this country where the 911 system has not been installed yet !

if i call the sheriff from my place, it will be at least an hour before they show up, usually longer!

a few years ago new york city built a new emergency comm center , the antennas were located on top of one of the tallest buildings in town, and the comm center was in one of the sub basements.
this system was considered to be absolutely foolproof, they would never again have to rely on ham radio or any other outside help in case of an emergency.

i'll give you one guess what happened !

911 works for medical emergencies, but that's it. Highly overrated for anything else..

The Collin County portion of the City of Richardson is a "dual service area". That is, you could get either Southwestern Bell or General Telephone (both have since changed their names). Since Southwestern Bell was MUCH better than General ("toy") Telephone no one wanted to use General. When Rockwell-Collins built a new plant General Telephone built a large facility right across the road from the new plant. Then they tried to "force" Collins into using them. However, the plant still wanted Southwestern Bell. General actually sued trying to make Collins use their facilities but they lost.

Next, there was a small apartment complex that was built right at the Richardson - Plano city limits (on the Richardson side). General made the owners a "deal" so that they could get some activity at their "new" facility. However, all of the telephone numbers were "Plano numbers" and not Richardson. When 911 came into being and General Telephone had to make their system directly come into the Richardson center they at first "balked". They wanted to go to Plano since that is where their service was based. Of course that didn't work with the State of Texas. Next General Telephone tried to charge the City of Richardson between $7000 and $10,000 a month to provide the 911 service. Of course this didn't "fly".

Next General tried to charge the less than 50 users something like $20 each per month to provide 911 service. This really got them into trouble with the Public Utilities Commission. General had to "settle" for the 75 cents a month that they were allowed to charge everyone for 911 service. General's try to make Rockwell - Collins use their service really cost them "big time".

Also, General built a radio tower next to their facility without getting a permit from the City of Richardson. Richardson made them remove it! That cost General Telephone Company a considerable amount in legal fees and fines from Richardson. To add to the "insult", Southwestern Bell built a large facility right next door to serve the Collins plant plus all of the new residential business from the housing developments that were built in the area.

ahhh, there is a name out of the deep dark past...

General Telephone... or as they used to say around here... "GEEE it WORKS?"

Yep, General and United (aka Untied Telephone) and now Sprint.

Funny to watch the evolution of the telcos. It remnds me of watching germs under a microscope.

For a brief example, SPR (Southern Pacific Railroad) decided to sell access to its network, and became SPRint, then merged with General Telephone and became GTE Sprint, then bought up a whole herd of mini-IXC's and became US Sprint and dropped the GTE... On the other side of the mississippi, was Microwave Communications Inc, a link between Springfield and Chicago, who then gobbled up other mini IXC's, moved from South Wacker Dr to the old home of one of the IXC's they ate and The Communigroup became the new home for MCI in Jackson MS.

Can remember when 911 first came out they advertised all you had to do was dial nine eleven to get emergency service, had to stop doing that when operator had people call them up and ask where the eleven button on their phone was so they could dial 9-11. Changed it to 9-1-1 after that..
