Richmond?!?!?! #Hmm.. #Couldnt be Dahlgren. #I hear Dahlgren all the time over here but I doubt that it would carry all the way down there. #There could be something going on from Indian Head but I doubt it. #Is it a low freq kinda vvoom or a wwwwwhomp feel it in your chest or a quick BOOM. #It does make a difference. #Quick boom would be like a sonic boom but a low vvvoom is HE.

Annoying.... Nah its the sound of freedom or atleast thats what they used to have outside the gates at NSWC Dahlgren VA. Back when they used to fire off that 16" gun every friday at noon. w00t! And did they tell anyone... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif Nah...after a couple of days, you learned that it was coming!

I guess I should clarify - I think ACP stand for Automatic Colt Pistol. The last I heard Colt is an American Company! And RCM said that (In the brain Surgery thread) that the failures emigrated here.

Where's NBW when you need him?

OK, that was the loudest pistol I could think of at the time... but now that you got me started maybe he is using a .44 magnum, or a .454 catsull, who knows... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I met a guy at the range awhile back that let me shoot a few rounds from his .50 revolver. I don't often need ear protection but that thing just plain HURT.

To make these booms audible in your part of the world, he uses a beamboom.

Ahh, I'm surprised anyone here knows about the TC Contender. #I don't have a 22-250 barrel, but my favorite is the 30-30 from a 10" bull barrel. #I've fired everything up to the 45-70 in the contender, but the 30-30 is my all time favorite.

Another fun round for it is the 256 Winchester Magnum. #The name sounds ferocious, but it is just a 357 Magnum necked down to 25 caliber. #High muzzle velocity, great accuracy for a 10" handgun barrel, but don't try to use for serious hunting on deer-sized game!

The .30 Herritt is another good round. #I had a barrel for that one once, but sold it to play with some others.

.44 Mag barrels are fun to play with on the contender. #I've never really liked the .44 Mag round, but I had a lot of fun working up rounds for a friend. #With the longer barrels, you can play with slower burning powders and get some pretty accurate rounds with a decent muzzle velocity. #Problem is, those same rounds would be lousy in a 4" or 6" S&W!

My kid works on AC130H Spectre gunships (USAF). They are usually up practicing when I visit him. They are attached to AFSOC and as such they don't practice during the day. When they are practicing at the water range the noise that the 105mm gun that they shoot makes is a low boom... boom... spaced about 1 second apart. It's easily heard when sitting in a crowded restaurant (on the beach). I don't know how far out the water range is but sound carries pretty well over water. The sound is much more pronounced when they are practicing at the gunnery range near the base. It's only about 10 miles or less from his house. Sometimes the percussion from the 105mm gun will rattle bbq implements off of the shelf. It gets real interesting when they let loose with the 20mm, 40mm, and 105mm guns...

The AC130H (Spectre) and AC130U (Spooky) are awesome machines.

It wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't a gunnery range in the area of the booms...

But... after reading all the articles... it's probably not gunships... probably just idiots...

Back in 1992, the first World Trade Center bombers tested the mix in the Naugatuck (CT) State Forest. Shook my windows, called it in to the cops, they could care less.

Someone is testing the mix for the next attack, plain and simple.

Just the Confederate Army in exile practising for the next attempt at secession! The South will Rise Again! If for no other reason than it get too darn cold in the north sometime. And remember the south is holding all your old folks hostage in Florida.

But then it may be just the gangs in the Richmond 'hoods sorting out the leadership thing.

Not really off topic, but does anyone remember what was termed as "exploding head syndrome?"
The "symptom" was memorable, and happened to me three or four times; Feeling a blast, and hearing it, complete with the rubble falling. All in Dolby™ surround.
The realism was more than intense; it was happening, all the way up to the reverberations.
This was happening to a large number of people in the mid 80's..
