We had a car vs horse accident call here once. Had a choice, cut the car apart to get the dead horse out or cut the dead horse apart. Car vs deer with human fatality isn't all that uncommon here either.

I almost hit a Moose in Maine once years ago. I think if I had just continued driving my little import wagon it would have just barely scratched the Moose's underbelly.
Hit a doe in Wyoming at 70 mph once. It went under the chassis. The car smelled like sage cud for a month.

A fellow that worked for the same company as I a few years back hit a large black bear on a freeway near Minneapolis and he was doing "freeway speed". Fortunately he and his wife were wearing seatbelts and they were not badly hurt. The bear had to be destroyed by animal control. The automobile was "totaled"!

I hit a good-sized deer in Germany with my truck late one night several years ago. Came around a corner doing around 50mph or so and all I saw were two glowing eyeballs looking right at me, no time to stop. It tried to get away but it couldn't get purchase on the pavement. My truck thwacked it hard and ran over it with both passenger side tires. I finally came to a stop and threw the rear foglights on to check it out, and the deer jumped up and ran off into the woods.
Had a little blood and hair on the front bumper, but that was it. Don't know if the deer survived but I reported it to the security police on base and never heard back, so I guess the forestmeister didn't find a dead deer with my tire marks on it #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Tough critters.

One of the best car vs deer stories happened to a ham friend of mine who shall remain nameless to protect the deer. He had a fair drive from where he lived to where he worked and drove over country roads for the most part. At least the first few miles from his farm were gravel. He was drivng a fairly new Ford Fiesta or Festiva or some such smaller-than-any-car-should-be vehicle. A few miles from home he hit a deer and did, as I remember, something like $3700 damage to the car. The deer got up and shook its head a few times and bounded off into the night. The deputy that responed told him he should give him a ticket for deer hunting with too small of a caliber weapon. My buddy saw little humor in the the remark. For some reason the insurance company didn't total the car, this was 10 yrs or more, so the damage was a significant part of the value of the car. Anyway he got the car fixed after about 3 weeks and I think about 4 nights later, within a half a mile of the first wreck spot, he hit another deer. This time it only did $1700 worth of damage to the car but did break a leg on the deer. The very same deputy responded and congratulated my buddy on his improved aim and hunting prowess though was still critical of the choice of small caliber weapons. The deputy had to dispatch the deer and offered the carcass to my friend in case he wanted the meat or wanted to mount the head and rack. The deputy then threatened to arrest my pal for the language and impolite suggestion he made to the deputy. Of course some of couldn't resist and when he got the car back from the body shop the second time, one guy had made up peel off clear decals to apply to the car windows, there were 2 deer carcass decals with 'x'es or maybe red circles with a line through them for the side of the car and a cross hair sight pattern to apply to the windshield so the he could be sure of a better aim when he wanted to take the car out deer hunting again. I think also there was a name decal for the car, something about deer hunter or deer slayer. If a cop had been around, he could have made another arrest for obscene language and gestures in public. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

My best deer story {that I can tell anyway} is this.
Back when my XYL was my YL and {I was still a YM I guess} around 1986 or so I decided to go visit my older sister back in northwestern Wisconsin. I was living in Illinois about 380 miles south of her place. The route took us up through Black River Falls Wisconsin.
Anyone who has ever been through the area know that the deer population is pretty thick there all the time. This particular summers night the Yl had decided she would come along to have some fun and to help keep me awake for the 8 or so hours it would take to get there.
I have to admit that since she worked second shift and I was on third she did pretty well staying awake. I had of course done the right thing and went pretty much straight to bed. I picked her up after work and we started.
The trip was pretty uneventful but around Black River she dosed off. Being the good fellow I am I let her sleep until just after we crossed I-90. We were going up highway 27 and had just made it to the turn off for Al Muth’s Harley Davidson shop when I stopped the car and actually quite gently nudged her awake.
She groggily woke up and asked what was the matter, did I want her to drive, how long had she been asleep, ect and tedious so forth. I told her to put on her glasses. As she was doing that I said “This is what you came along for, to help keep me awake.
There were at least 30 deer on the highway.
Now, I hadn’t hit any of them, and they were just standing there looking at us. It was really quite lovely in the moon light and all. She freaked out. I don’t think she had ever seen that many deer all in one place before in her life except maybe at a deer park.
She didn’t sleep again until we got to my sisters.

speaking of moose, my dad's family moved to northeastern minnesota in the spring of 1934.
that fall, after school had started my dad was invited to have dinner and spend the night at the home of one of his classmates.
after they had finished eating, the subject turned to hunting.
my dad said that my grandfather was trying to get a moose, and that he was looking forward to it as he had never tasted moose before, his friend,s mother turned away from the sink and said "yes, you have!"

Funniest deer story I ever heard:
I worked with a guy who just loved Cadillacs. One night, he hit a deer while he was driving home. Completely destroyed his grill, and a part of the buck's rack sheered off and flew through his windshield. But the buck was only stunned. It came to jumped up while he was waiting for the police, and ran off into the woods. So the car was towed to a body shop, where it was repaired.
Two weeks later, the guy was driving the car home from the repair shop, just after sundown. As he drove around a curve, he saw a buck with a broken rack standing in the middle of the road, so he slammed on the brakes.
The buck turned and charged toward the car, turned around and kicked with his hind legs, destroying the grill and radiator. Back to the repair shop for another two weeks!
Harvey swore the story was true, that he had his car damaged by the same deer on two different occasions. But who knows? He had a reputation as a BSer, but quite an entertaining one.

actually, i started out as a novice, wnouyw, then they dropped the n prefix for novices and gave me wb0uyw (1975) i upgraded and i was active for quite a while, then i had more important things to deal with and radio was not one of them.
i let my licence lapse, and just decided to get back into it in 2002.
someone told me if i could show the ve's an old call book with my listing, i would not have to take the code test again.
i brought a copy of the old listing and found out that not only did i not have to take the code test again, all i had to do was take the then current tech test to get the general.
then a friend and i decided to get the extra, so we went to a test session and we both came away with the extra.
if i could pass the code, then there is not much excuse for anyone else claimng " it's too hard "
as i stated in another thread, the reason i got the extra was so that i only have to remember the band edges, not the sub bands too!

People east of Gilroy California won't understand the comment about the pie - that's the title of a song that was the theme music for a popular radio station in the South Bay Area - KFAT. FCC must not be in business in California, or that station isn't doing that anymore.
You can't run over one of our Minnesota white tails unless you're driving a monster truck or something similar. I hit one with the family van on Christmas a few years ago. Wiped out the whole front end of the van, but didn't break the windshield, even though the deer rolled up and over the top of the vehicle - nearly collapsed the roof in on us. There were three of the big dummies standing in the highway when I crested the hill, if this one had gone forward instead of backing up, I'd have missed all three. Oh well, as the insurance guy said, there are two kinds of drivers up here, those who have hit a deer, and those who will...
Deer count in Maryland . . . 2 on highway I 70 between Hagerstown and Frederick this morning! I'm surprised there are any left in the state ! If I don't see at least one dead deer on the side of the road each day, I think I'm not paying enough attention to my driving !

Talk about deer. Take a walk through Valley Forge park in PA sometime. You can get to within 25 feet of them before they bother to look at ya. Some of the bucks in the fall ( yes, thats when they have those sharp horney thingies on their heads) when they look up, at that close range, have the look of what da *^#@* you lookin at. It can send a chill down your spine when you ain't got no weapon.

Ha! You have been hornwinked ... uh, hoodwinked. That thar moose is a beaten horse in disguise.
My daughter, driving my truck (no, definitely not her own) hit a Black Angus steer in the road. Steer 1, truck zero. Odd, she says. Black cows are hard to see on a lonely, dusty road, late at night. Tore my truck up, though I managed to sell it to someone. A year later I learned I could have had the steer owner pay for the repairs, as cattle on the highway are considered a traffic hazard. Yeah, how about that? Really? And the owner is responsible.
I hit a deer once, driving a tractor trailer. Well, no, the deer hit my truck, in Virginia one night, on a lonely road. I saw the deer at the last moment but the tractor was already passing. In that split second I figured, good, that deer is smart. He wasn't. As soon as the headlights were out of his eyes, he dashed across the road. Well, partway across the road. He hit the handle that adjusts the rear wheels. I didn't even feel it, but I saw it in the glow of the marker lights, in the mirror. I stopped and went back, figured, what the heck, I'd load him in the freezer. But he was long gone. Plenty of blood on the handle, though, so I doubt he made it too far.
Wanna see LOTS of deer? Drive from Meeker, Colorado to Rifle, Colo. The deer get in the cattle herds and mix with them, eating the alfalfa. Hundreds and hundreds of them, no kidding. We had to drive 15 miles an hour to keep from hitting them in the road. Found one that had just barely NOT made it over a barbed wire fence. Stopped to help it, then saw it was already dead. But others just stood around and watched us.
Anyway, that Morse, uh Horse in Moose's clothing, could stand another whack or two with the bat.

Very funny!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
A few years ago, there was a video of a guy who smeared himself with deer lure, and had his wife shoot the video of him walking up to a buck in his back yard. The buck reared up, charged, and front leg kicked the guy all over his body--as the wife screams "No! No! No!"
I guess he made a few dollars from video sales to cover his medical expenses. I sometimes wonder if that video might have been the inspiration for "Jackass."
