On the news, I heard this evening, a very small announcement about an issue that I have been watching.
A little background to refresh the memory;
many years ago, I forget the year, a taped conversation was published in the news medial. The tape was a cell phone conversation between an Ohio Congressman (John Boehner) and the Speaker of The House, Newt Gingrich. The tape was traced back to a couple in Florida that just happened to be listening to cell phone calls, and just happened to have a tape recorder handy. These people turned the tape over to "Baghdad" Jim McDermott, who in turn, turned it over to the news media.
What caught my interest, this all happened AFTER the "Communications Privacy Act", which made monitoring cell phones illegal, as well as the Communications Act of 1934 which made the act of divulging the information learned illegal.
The privacy act drew a lot of attention at the time, so it would be no surprise to ANY ONE if they were caught breaking the law, and the Communications Act had been on the books long enough as not to be a surprise to anyone either.
This "innocent couple" claimed that they picked up the stuff to build the equipment at Radio Shack. Anyone that knows Radio Shack, knows how false that statement was.
Well, this evening news said that the Florida radio felons got a $500 fine (each) and "Baghdad" Jim got a $600,000 fine!
So, now we know that the "$10,000 per day" fine is really $500.00.
Any bets that "Baghdad" Jim OR the Florida Felons never send the FCC a dime??
