In my early years of ham radio, I recall two late night nets on 40 meters. One was “The Papulie (sic?) Net, meeting at about 7.297 and the other was “The County Hunters Net” meeting somewhere near 7.240. The Papulies were a fun group, very silly. The proper method to break in was the distinctive, QPU, meaning who knows what? Does anybody out in QRZ land remember these two groups? I know “The Papulies” were pretty much west cost, but I believe “The County Hunters” were nationwide.

I would love to hear if anybody remembers hearing or working these nets.

I have never heard of "The Papulie" and I have never checked into the 40 meter County Hunters net, but I have been on the County hunters group before (I think around 14.336).

Don't know anything about a Papulie group, but as to the other group... are you maybe thinking of the Triple H Net ??

"The Net operates 364 days/year on a frequency of 7.235 mHz, starting at 0700 Z."

They're a fun group and they've been around longer than I remember. I used to SWL to them long before I got my license.

A local bunch in north and central NJ had a net on 21432 when I was a teenager called the "Midnight Special." Yes, we all got on on Friday night at Midnight. Of course 15 was dead at that hour . . . or was it?

We knew we pretty much had a private local net going on, but every once in a while, the band would be open, just empty. And sure enough, we'd get a check-in from who knows where.

That was the most fun I've had on HF fone. I'm NOT a voice guy on HF, I hate the sound of SSB and Donald Duck, but that group - we all knew each other in person - was a blast.

As far as I know, none of those guys are still active. That's a shame.
