On the Front Lines of Digital E-Comms

Southeastern Emergency Digital Association Networks (SEDAN) has over 50 nodes in Florida, dedicated to emergency communications. SEDAN also covers serveral other states in the southeastern seaboard, making SEDAN the largest contiguous packet radio network in the world.

You can find out about Florida SEDAN at: http://www.geocities.com/floridasedan/sedaninfo.html

To give you an idea of what it is like on the front lines of digital emergency communications, below there is a note I recieved from Tom Nolan, Florida SEDAN's network manager describing some of his group's work during hurricane Charley.

Charles

Just got home this morning from the Hurricane Damaged area in Fla. I have worked without sleep 48 hours so far.

This is what I have worked on in the Damaged Counties:

I went to work in the Staging area in Punta Gorda installing an antenna and packet station for AE4MR. #In the Amateur trailer I installed a portable packet unit so the staging area could send packets to the EOC in Charlotte County.

Charlotte County EOC, had lost their antennas, so I reinstalled them at the EOC and worked on their packet system. While I was there working on the packet system, I worked net manager on voice for 15 hours. I was able to use the SEDAN system to get out of the county, and also man the voice repeater.

The Link from Punta Gorda to SARA (Sarasota), was marginal since it was 45 miles away. So I left Punta Gorda and went to VENICE Fla, and my SEDAN crew brought me equipment and we installed a new SEDANode.

With the VENICE SEDANode working it cut the distance to SARA in Half and now we have a solid SEDAN link in and out of the hurricane damaged area.

I am now home in JAX and connected to the Staging trailer AE4MR, in Punta Gorda which is 300 miles away.

I will rest a few days and go back down the state on the other coast of Fla and repair another antenna that was damaged in the storm.

These folks do excellent work and could use some support, right about now.
