Timing is everything ... one of the projected paths of Jeanne is right up the east coast, and I'm supposed to be headed to Hatteras Island Sunday for my yearly vacation.

That's bad enough, but nothing compared to the beating Alabama is currently taking ... 12 reported deaths this morning. #We are praying for the folks on the Gulf Coast suffering this terrible storm!

Best 73,
Luke

Luke,

May I suggest Washington state for your vacation this year? Seattle is beautiful, and if you're a golfer, my home town of Spokane in eastern Washington has several very nice courses. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The birdies (all types) are safe ... haven't played in 15 years!

So, how are the vacation packages in the desert southwest these days?

I will be taking one of my HF rigs, can't imagine anyone stateside needs Hatteras (NA-69?), but year before last I was busy with our friends across the pond!

Very dynamic schedule:

0900 utc to local sunrise: #7.010 - 7.040
1130 utc to 1st beer break: 10.106 - 10.116 ; 14.010 - 14.040
Will probably hang out on 17 & possibly 15 meters on and off depending on how good the fishing is. #If I remember the mic this year, probably a little time on 75 phone at night.

Luke

For those that are not in the South and want to help, may I suggest the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund (https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp)?

Speaking of relief.....Anyone hear from AI4EP since this morning? It looks like Ivan pretty much went over the top of his head. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

It looks like AI4FP also took a direct hit. His last post was about 0900.

Yikes, that would not be good!

Anyone there that can get in touch with him, let us know.

His last post was this morning a little after 0800 on the other hurricane thread. It looks like Ivan went a bit to the east of his QTH but just barely. I think he caught a major part of it.

I don't know AI4EP's situation, but that far away from the coast I'm guessing it's a power outage and/or he lost his internet connection. I sincerely hope his family and home are safe.

I just got an email from Charlie, AG4YO. It sounds like he and his wife evacuated and are ok. Unfortunately he says, in his words "The house is toast. Roof damage, one wall crushed all by trees. ... Bummer."

Darn, I hate to hear that and sure wish there were something I could do.

We're thinking about you, Charlie, and I hope the damage turns out to be less than the preliminary evaluation. If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to ask.

Isn't Charlie the one with the huge trees by his house, that he was worried about with Charley?

It was a beautiful house, too. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I forgot........thanks for mentioning that. I'm a routine blood donor and gave a pint last week with the designation for Florida storm victims. I've already given my annual cash donation to the Red Cross.

At least I feel a little better.

just be glad ( thankful ) that you are ABLE to give what you can when you can.

As for me, I live about 40 miles west of HUNTSVILLE ( which is about 275-300 miles north of the Mobile / Gulf of Mexico area ).

We had a power outage that lasted 9 and a half hours..due to 60 plus mile per hour winds mostly from the east / northeast.

Reason for the power outage is tht in this area the crews that are contracted to cut the " right of ways " along side the power lines do NOT clear off enough to where that IF a tree falls, that the power line is not hit at all by the tree. They clear about 15 - 20 feet on either side of the line, and that is it !
The crew had just been through this area about 3 weeks ago, and quite a few folks are upset that the " clearing " seems to get a tad bit smaller and less cut every time a contracted crew comes through.

I dont think the contracted crews ( not the local utility ) realize how the winds are, and of course they arent inclined to cut more than is absolutely necessary......so... the local contractors need to ( IMHO )

1) cut the right of ways as wide as they NEED to be so that when a tree falls, that it does not touch the lines at all.
2) bury the power lines underground ( very expensive, but little maintenance ) and then they dont have to worry about winds or ice on power lines from our sporatic ice storms in this area .

But problably the local utility will do nothing, and have to keep replacing wires, poles, etc when the trees that are too close to the lines fall on the lines. I dont know if they really care on a big level or not...it might be their version of " job security " to keep it as it is.

I know this had nothing to do with amateur radio, but now you folks know how things are around here with that situation.

So far as damage from IVAN... I saw 3 - 5 trees down in about a 3 mile area of woods, we got just under 3 " rain, and gusts of winds (IMHO ) of 60 + mph for several hours.

But tonight the stars are out, virtually NO wind, just the quiet after the storm the day before.

From tv pictures, the pensacola - mobile area really got hit hard and some areas they have NOT let the families go back to their old home sites yet in Florida & Alabama ( why ? )
....Alabama governor has been on tv more in past 2 days than in past 6 months with press conferences, q & a sessions, etc. I DO like the idea of him ( or any public official ) being out where the public can see them...it helps keep the rumors down and information coming in.
