New Database Server
If you've noticed that the website has speeded up since yesterday, it's because we've just installed a new, more powerful database server. Our old machine was a 2x300Mhz CPU Sun Ultra-2 with 768MB of RAM. It was plum tuckered out!

Our new database engine is a Sun E280R. This 64-bit industrial strength machine has dual 900Mhz processors, 4 GB of RAM, and 2x36gb 10,000 RPM Fibre channel disk drives. The disks are impressive as I've clocked them at speeds of up to 64 MB/s. In 10 seconds it can move an entire CDROM's worth of data internally. For the computer geeks in the crowd, the net size of all the QRZ databases is about 1.5Gb with another 1.2Gb in image files (QSL cards, etc). We've got plenty of room to grow!

Please bear in mind that I'm only talking about the database server here. Our main web server is a 4x450 Mhz E420R Sun with 2GB of RAM. We also operate a couple of other servers, one for name services, mail, and one dedicated to data backup.

Many thanks to all those who have made donations, purchased our products, and advertised with us during the past year. Your kindness kindness has helped make this new capacity possible.

New Groups
I installed two new Forum Groups today. We now have a new Radio Mods, Tips and Secrets (http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=SF;f=15) forum that we'll hope more folks will use to post great technical tips.

In addition, I've created a new DX Helpers (http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=SF;f=16) forum so that folks can volunteer as DX Helpers, as well as find a DX Helper when needed. As some may recall, I sent out a call for volunteers last month and got quite a few replies. My plan was to list the volunteers on a separate web page but then my senses got the better of me when I suddenly realized that a Forum would be the way to go.

DX Helpers
What is a DX Helper? New callsigns in our database can only be added by licensed amateurs. When a DX station comes to QRZ and want's to add is callsign to our database, he'll need to find an existing QRZ member to help him out. This is the place to do that. Just go to the DX Helpers page and drop a note indicating that you're willing to help. You may or may not include your email as the systems PM (private messenger) will work just as well.

If you are a DX station and need help, please go to the DX Helpers page and there you'll find a lot of kind folks who are more than willing to help you out.

Pictures
I thought folks might like to see what the QRZ computer complex looks like. Actually, it's all in one large rack cabinet in a secure data facility in downtown Phoenix. The other cabinets next to it make it look a lot bigger, but we've just got the one space. Still, it's a very good place to host the site, and the connection is "mui primo!".

Ok, lets be honest here; you went and spent $20 on another new hamster and wheel. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

v.nice improvements though, thanks!

Since you seem to be in the adding mood, how about perhaps a section for satellite work?

Yes, it is indeed better to use.

Many thanks for the pro-active effort.

One suggestion though :

It would be helpful if the Login provision is made prominently on the top bar having the Callsign lookup and the date and time stamp.

It could help the people opening the site to login immediately.

Outstanding and thanks for a glimpse at the back of the rack...neat. Can you put back the MAP feature under details with this new update?http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

AA7BQ

We removed the MAP feature after we just got tired of answering angry emails from folks who thought we were giving terrorists directions to their homes.

Even though the suggestion was completely without reason, we just got tired of arguing with people who failed to understand that it didn't matter. The principal argument was that "Yes, I know that a terrorist can look up my address on MapQuest, but you just make it too easy for them".

We might put it back, or we might put up a poll.

Fred, Why not just create an opt out for people to disable the map in their own listing? I guess it doesn't make any difference to me one way or the other, if someone really wants to find me, it's not going to be hard.

Being one of the computer geeks in the crowd, I will say that I am very pleased to hear that QRZ.com is on SUN servers, SUN machines are some of the most stable machines around. Instead of being x86 they are Sparc machines, and those are more expensive, yet better machines..

Keep up the good work here at QRZ.com, providing one of the most useful websites for Amateur Radio!

Great job with your site. It is really noticeably faster.
Qrz is the best ham site in my opinion.

Maybe QSL.net could learn something about speedy web sites
from your example.

Unfortunately, I had to spend an hour trying to log in and reregister from 2 weeks ago. # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif # I don't understand what happened, but the database said I didn't exist. I had posted a comment to the Friendship Award forum at the time I had registered a couple of weeks ago. #What happened?http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Very sorry to hear of your login frustrations. The system doesn't have a record of your previous registration which leads me to suspect that you did not complete your previous registration. After 10 days, the system discards any registrations thar are not completed. Completion takes place when the member returns the unique code that the system issues and delivers via email. This unique code serves as a confirmation of the members email address.

We've found that a lot of people don't understand the process and as administrators of the system, we're often frustrated by the clear evidence that people aren't reading the instructions that are presented along with the process. This isn't anything new, it's been a problem at QRZ for quite a while. I've even gone so far as to completely rewrite the login code so in an effort to make it easier, (really easy) and still people fall on their faces.

One thing for certain is that the software, which comes from http://www.ikonboard.com , works very well, provided that you follow the instructions. It's a very popular system with thousands of websites using it.

We recently upgraded our copy of ikonboard and with it we returned to the factory default login procedure. No doubt that a lot of people "get it" but still, we have occasional problem reports from our users.

All I can say in conclusion is that we try as hard as we can and that's all we can do. There are about 150,000 registered users on this system and at any given time, at least 100 of them are asking for help each day. We're very thankful that 99% of our users do "get it". Otherwise, the administration of this site would be truly impossible.

Again, very sorry for the trouble but we're glad that you were able to sort it out.

Good grief. That can't possibly be an installation by a ham radio operator. It is not messy enough, not by a long shot. My stuff never looks that tidy. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

All kidding aside, Fred. Nice job. Thanks for the pics.
