What is ARTS? It stands for the Amateur Radio Tolerance Society. And who should know more about that than our XYL's?
With the recent introduction of the RCC Award, the question was raised as to why there isn't an award for the ladies who put up with us hams. So, in response to popular demand, SPAR is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the ARTS Award for our beloved XYL's.
So, for those honest hams who want to show some appreciation for their long-suffering XYL's, the ARTS Certificate can be downloaded, printed, filled out and presented to their tolerant half. The certificate is on the SPAR web site at ARTS for the XYL (http://www.spar-hams.org/index.php?pg=12).

I thought XYL just meant your wife - ticket or not. Oh well...
Definately a post I can relate to. My wife puts up with ham radio, but she want's to take NO part in it. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
Seems the more you try, the worse it get's, too.

Too bad about the fellow those hams that don't have support from their spouses or significant others. I'm amazed at the number of Ops visit the home QTH, see my gear, and relate how they have to sneak equipment into their houses or are "disallowed" the liberty of putting up an antenna. Although not a ham, my wife will (occasionally) even watch the hamfest table and/or buy me a piece of new gear. I'm fortunate, it appears. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

In her role as your wife, she is an XYL even if she has a ticket. In her role as a radio operator, she is a YL. So depending on the circumstances, she could be referred to either way. For example, my husband could say "N8UZE is a YL and is my XYL."

I don't like the term XYL... My wife has been and will always be my YL.

Thank you for the post, even though my wife is licensed she is not what I consider a ham radio operator only a radio operator when the need is there. On the other hand her husband gives her a lot to tolerate in life so she is deserving of an award... #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I will be sure to print, fill out and frame the award for her tolerance of ham radio in our lives together. This past weekend (Labor Day) we camped and she couldn't believe that I brought my FT-847 and antennas along. Lately I have not had the time for amateur radio so this was my oportunity... #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif We had a good time, me and my radios, LOL! Actually, I was busy at the camp site so radio wasn't the main attraction. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

this is a good idea. Most of the wifes of hams in our local club absolutely hate the hobby There are a select few, such as myself, who's wifes love it almost as much as we do.
As far as the term xyl goes... I never use it. I always thought xyl was the amateur equivilent of "old bat". Been married 21 years and she is still my YL.

My Husband is tolerant and supportive about my "HAM" Habit. He helped me with getting information inorder for me to get my ticket. He currently does not have a strong desire to get his ticket.

My wife was not interested in getting a ticket until too many times she could not get hold of me while out and mobile. Cell phones for us both not practical due to cost. She finally realized the value and not only now does she keep in touch with me when one of us is out, but she edits the club newsletter and has served several terms as Secretary of the club here. I am so proud of her!

I'm surprised they still use the letters XYL. I thought by now it would be politically incorrect or sexist to use XYL, since XYL stands for ex-young lady. It's a wonder they haven't changed XYL to something else the same as they have changed licensing requirements and everything else that is related to ham radio. Hmmm
"Recent introduction of RCC"http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif??? Is there something new with the venerable RCC initials?? I've held RCC award for nearly 30 years, (Rag Chewer's Club). What is the new "RCC"??

In its infinite wisdom, the ARRL discontinued the RCC Award. In as much as the RCC is a true ham tradition, SPAR has reintroduced the award. It is available to all hams, regardless of whether they participate in SPAR or not. Yes, I got the award over 30 years ago, too.
The announcement is at http://www.qrz.com/ib-bin/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST&f=3&t=69510
or go to the SPAR web site (http://www.spar-hams.org/index.html) for more information.
