Japan's largest hamfest, the JAIA Ham Fair, was held this weekend at the Tokyo Big Sight International Convention Center. The crowd on Saturday appeared to be way up from last year's event.
Among the highlights:

Yaesu and Icom were both showcasing their $10,000 HF transceivers. Yaesu showed both the FTdx9000D and FTdx9000MP variants of their super rig. Icom's booth featured the IC-7800, along with a wall display showing some of the building blocks that go inside.
Icom was also showing their new IC-756PROIII addition to the 756 series. They also emphasized their D-STAR line-up including the ID-800, ID-1, and repeaters.
Kenwood had a nice demonstration of their ARCP-480 Radio Control Program for TS-480 control.
AOR has some fast scanning "surveillance" receivers, and is even offering a tube type stereo amplifier for audiophiles.
Alinco's new DJ-C7 HT weighs in at about 100g and just over 1/2 inch thick.
There were over 170 clubs with booths at the show. These ranged from large organizations like JAMSAT, the Japan Shortwave Club, and SEANET down to local organizations who use their booth space for flea market sales. There were a wide spectrum of organizations promoting every facet of amateur radio including mountain-topping, microwave activity, antenna construction, facsimile, SSTV, ATV, RTTY, 10M FM, 6M AM, CW enthusiasts, QRP, homebrewing, classic rigs, military surplus, etc.
The Basic Human Needs Association (http://www.bhn.or.jp/eng/english-index/indexe.htm) NGO had an interesting display showing their support for telecom projects around the world, including long term projects in Afghanistan and Laos.
