I was just told about this web-site and thought it was hilarious. Political satire, bashing Bush and Kerry (somewhat equally?).
Warning: for those of you who are really prude the movie has TWO words that make this PG, not G rated.

I saw this movie on Imus-in-the-Morning and can't stop watching it.

Make sure however that once you leave Jibjab, you run Ad-Aware and Spybot as jibjab puts ALOT on your hard drive. I found out the hard way.

Woody's son, Arlo, inherited Woody's copyrights. Arlo also used to create parodies of other artists' songs, may still do so. Arlo is now threatening to have the site shut down, alleging copyright infringement. I think maybe he's had too much of what he wants at Alice's Restaurant.

How ironic, you would think that Arlo, and old Hippie, would get a kick out of it. It's only a stupid joke. Also, I thought Hippies were not supposed to be so materialistic. He should mellow out and get a sense of humor. Now if they were selling the move for $19.95 he might have some kind of point.

Arlo Guthrie on "This Land" parody
Arlo Guthrie did an NPR appearance this week to talk about his father, Woody Guthrie, and his attitude to copyright. Woody's song "This Land is Your Land" was brilliantly parodied by JibJab in an election-season Flash movie, and the publishing company that controls Woody's rights has brought legal action against JibJab -- and EFF has responded by filing its own legal action against the rightsholders.
Arlo implies that Woody would have wanted it that way:
# # Well, I really can't speak for him. I can just tell you that when I saw it a few weeks ago I thought it was one of the funniest commentaries if not one of the most directly inspired... I called my sister, I called my friends, I sent everybody a link to the site so that they could go see it. And we've all been laughing about it since then. I think my dad would have absolutely loved the humor in it.

Cathy Guthrie's opinion of the JibJab parody of her grandfather's song
Cathy Guthrie, one half of the band Folk Uke, and also the daughter of Arlo Guthrie and grandaughter of Woody Guthrie emailed Gary and I at Ukulelia about JibJab's parody of "This Land is Your Land." (See Cory's entry about the publishing company that controls the right to the song and how it is taking legal action against JibJab.) Cathy gave me permission to run her comments on Boing Boing:
# # I can speak for myself and my immediate family including my Dad, that we all love it! #We've all seen it and passed it along to our friends and family. #It's incredibly clever, funny and a nice break from the heavy tones of politics going on right now. #My personal opinion is that if I were the one who had written that song, I would be honored to have it used that way. #If they start selling that song and making money, then I might be concerned about getting my royalties, but as far as I know, they haven't made any money from showing it on their site for free. #That parody was made for you and me. #
---------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see, it's the publishing company that's raising the fuss.
And thanks for the heads-up on the spyware, I was wondering where I picked it up. I guess I need to be more carefull.

N8CPA -- Sorry about that, I didn't mean to beat you over the head with it. I was up late too last night - only meant to post the *Arlo* part, not the *Cathy* part. I had it filed away in notepad to send to my brother and just copied the whole thing.
Went around singing *you can get anything you want...* for a long time after I first heard it. Still play it almost every Thanksgiving. The movie was good, like the song better.

Back in my high school days, WFMT, a bastian of Classical Music in the Chicago area, went away from their normal format and broadcast a program of Folk Music, Protest Songs, and commentary ( this was during the Vietnam War era ) every Saturday night. Naturally, this was called the "Saturday Night Special".
One of the mainstays of that show was Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" which was played , in its entirety EVERY weekend! As many times as I heard that performance ( more than a song! ) I never got tired of hearing it again!
"This Land is Your Land" got its fair share of airtime, as well! Thanks for the memories! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You're right Jim, performance is way more accurate than song. # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

By the way - does anybody know how to save the Bush-Kerry This Land parody as a file, so I don't have to keep going back to JibJab to view it? Or know of someplace else to see/download it?
Thanks and 73 -- Tim

STX:
Woody Guthrie has, in my opinion, been labeled a "commie" unfairly. The man was never a commie. Most people from his hometown of Okeema, Oklahoma (yes-he is another famous Oklahoman) adored the man and his music. But, don't worry OM, I am not taking offense at your orginal post. It is interesting how some would beleave an "urban ledgan".
BTW, Okeema is located about 30 miles or so east of Oklahoma City on Interstate 40. And I have happen to LOVE Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant", especially about the "blind justice"-Gawd, I LMAO at that!
"You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant..."
