The ten best things I like about America.
1. Seeing Ol' Glory being displayed.
2. Seeing our troops returned home safe and sound.
3. Volunteerism.
4. Our Firemen and EMT's
5. Our Veterans of ALL wars and conflicts.
6. Children playing safely in my neighborhood.
7. Mother's day.
8. The 4th of July.
9. Parades.
10. Hope.
The thing I love about America...
That no matter HOW much others try to put an American into a box and attach some kind of label to them.. they ALWAYS manage to bedevil their observers by NOT neatly fitting into a category and rendering the label description fully void.
Trying to define America means defining Americans and defining Americans is like trying to define the EXACT line of demarkation of each color in the Aurora Borealis.
you can try.. but it shifts too much to do so.
The Predictable Unpredictability of America!

Not in any particular order:
1. Seeing a flag proudly flown.
2. Baseball games (even minor league).
3. Singing the National Anthem (even that darned high note!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
4. The love of pets (cats or dogs).
5. The wonderful variety of cuisines we can choose from (one commentator has pointed out that this is the only place in the world where you can have a Japanese man open a store selling Kosher tacos.)
6. Amateur radio.
7. The great beauty of 7-land. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
8. The freedom to go to the church of my choice on Sunday.
9. The great helpfulness of Americans... even in this day of heightened security, if you're broken down on the side of the road, chances are at least one person will offer to help.
10. Being the light of freedom to the rest of the world.

Things I love:
Our constitution: One of the greatest documents in the history of world civilization. Not bad for a bunch of farmers, manufacturers and shopkeepers.
Baseball: A truly American game. The perfect blend of individual achievement and teamwork.
Jazz: America's one true original art form. The perfect blend of musical structure and freedom; of intellect and emotion, of order and chaos.
Democrats and Republicans: they provide perfect balance for one another. I am probably in the minority here, but I really see both sides as complimenting one another and keeping each other in check. It's what has made us great, and will continue to keep us great in the future. Democracy simply doesn't work without having a marketplace of ideas. No one ideology is correct all the time.
The fact that we have set more people free than any nation in history.
Our diversity. Only in America can the opinions of cultures that are diametrically opposed to one another be blended in a way that we create something new. Here we teach diversity. Here, we blend the ideas of the African, the Arabian, the Irish, the Native American, the German, the Chinese, etc.... It is our GREATEST STRENGTH but sadly, also OUR STRONGEST WEAKNESS. A definate two edged sword.
Freedom. Freedom to do anything, become anything, that anyone wants. The only limits are the ones we put upon ourselves. Most of our billionaires, the Sam Waltons, the Bill Gates, etc., rose from poverty, and that's fact. Only in America could this happen. It really is the land of opportunity.
There are many many more, but I won't list them. These are the ones that come to mind. All one needs to do to truly appreciate this great land of ours is to leave it for any length of time. I guarantee you will miss it. God Bless America the greatest nation on Earth.

What I like is the diversity of the American people. We are all from different and varied backgrounds and ethnic groups yet we still make it work. What started out as a few ships landing on a dangerous and hostile shore has become the most powerful nation on Earth.
Ok, here's the list.
1. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
2. The National Anthem and the Flag.
3. The Men and Women of the Military.
4. The Pacific North West.
5. The Grand Tetons
6. The Freedom
7. The "can do" attitude of the American people
8. The game of Football
9. The History
10. The Land

2 Conservative Liberals and Liberal Conservatives.

lack thereof).
4 The fact that we are the guarantor of Israel's right to
exist.
5 Gun controll
6 Politicians
7 Lawyers
8 Gourmet cheese from aerosol cans.
9 Cheap, tastless beer.
10 Our government sanctioned medical and
pharmaceutical monoplies.
11 The fact that we will NEVER discontinue the use of the
one cent piece or replace the paper dollar bill with a
coin.
12 Not having to live in the people's republics of New Jersey or Kalifornia.

Hate to burst your bubble, EWS, but William Gates III has never known poverty; not even close. #And that's a fact. #Bill Gates is known for saying that your best edge is to "be born into the right family." #His parents were wealthy long before Bill dropped out of college.
The Waltons may not have been rich (not sure on that one), but they were rich enough to own a successful little store in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Both of these are "great American success stories" but in neither case did they "rise from poverty." Er, unless your definition of poverty is not having a personal driver for the Cadillac. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

KF0RT: I guess I stand corrected. I knew that Gates' mom was a teacher, but forgot that Daddy was a lawyer. I do know that Sam Walton was into retailing at the managerial level from place to place for a lot of his carreer before opening his first store in 1962.
I guess my point is that neither of these guys, or many others were "old money" in the respect that they were not born with it already handed to them. Even Gates had to start somewhere, and this was a country that allows for achievement from any level. It's not a nation that is dominated by aristocracy. Sure, we have "old money" and our own brand of aristocrocy, but we also live in a system in which common people are not prevented to attaining those things too. I guess that's the point I was trying to make.

Sam Walton wasn't rich when he started out. The reason why he did so well is because it helps to marry a woman who's family's business is banking.
Before he started Wal-Mart, Mr. Sam, as everyone called him, worked for a person at a major retail chain and was dismissed because his employer didn't think he had what it takes to be a retailer. Mr. Sam's boss was JC Penny himself.
As Paul Harvey would say: Now you know the rest of the story.
