Earth-Directed Sunspot Now Size of 20 Earths
At 20 times the size of Earth, the largest sunspot observed since the fall solar storm onslaught is now pointed directly at Earth. Its unusually large size also means that it's now visible with the naked eye (although you should never look at the Sun without a proper filter). The implications of this spot have scientists on the edge of their seats - if the active region generates coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive explosions with a potential force of a billion megaton bombs, it will be a fairly direct hit to Earth and its satellites and power grids.

Can you imagine the effect that a CME from this sun spot
would have on radio communications on Earth?

Wonder how long it took Marvin the Martian to get that PU238 exploding space modulator in position there.

EP:
No! It will be the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! Remember the "cult" movie by the same name. Just remember to keep your recording of the song that kills them plus a copy of the sheet music just in case one wears ear-muffs!
But, I don't know about what will help with the Killer Carrots that were spawing at the end of the movie!
This movie is considered by many experts to be the worst movie ever made! However, its popularity comes and goes as each generation becomes exposed to it.

I never did get the honor of seeing that " cult " movie about the killer tomatoes
I was always stuck with the BATMAN, and SUPERMAN and of course, the ( almost ) never ending "star trek " stuff for years & years ( most of those actors have either went to making better movies, or went to network lawyer shows ( Shatner will be on some take-off of the PRACTICE this fall on abc ...it problably wont last more than a season or two )
Remember the saga of the " killer rabbit "that was supposedly chasing or after one of our past presidents ? It made news for weeks afterwards...if it occurs again, it will problably be a "middle eastern terrorist " with a micro-chip in its brain telling it to get near some one and "blow itself up ' { a suicide rabbit ! }
( silly rabbit, trix are for kids ) http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Wouldn't it be cool if the sun blew up? We'd have about eight minutes of awesome propagation before we got the Kp kicked out of us.

We had a huge solar flare/CME similar to this last year during CQ World Wide. #Everybody thought the event would be ruined. #In fact, the bands absolutely sizzled until about 18:00Z Sunday when we were visited by a "sudden ionospheric disturbance". #The bands went dead just like somebody threw a switch. #It was so sudden and profound I thought the we somehow blew up the front end of my TS2K. #Scared the hell out of me! #40, 20, and 15 were SILENT. #After searching around for 20 minutes I found a station in Canada on 10. #I broke contest protocol and asked the guy if the bands had dropped out up there. #"Oh heck yea! #Two of our guys thought their radios died." #The bands started to recover after 45 minutes. #
Just be aware of this particular phenomenon. #SID can be dramatic, and if you don't know about it, you'll think your radio bellied up. #Considering recent solar activity, I'm guessing we may have it show up in our near future.

KRP: I remember the same exact thing happening last year on Sunday of the ARRL CW Sweepstakes. I didn't do the CQWW but I do remember we had an X class flare here about 1800 Z. I wonder if we're not talking about the same contest. I remember being on 15, wall to wall QRM, and then it got really quiet. I thought my rig broke. Checked the solar page, and lo and behold, major flare.

I remember that X28 flare last November. I got treated to my first aurora, right here in Texas. I had never saw one before and thought I'd have to go to a northern state or Canada to see one. Turns out one of my goals in life was fufilled while sitting outside at my QTH.
It lasted for about 15 minutes, and was a brilliant red. It had "ripples" like a big curtain. I didn't have an HF radio, nor was I a General yet, so I do not know how that flare affected the HF bands.

It was definitely CQWW. I didn't operate the CW Sweeps - I'm too slow. But you obviously know what I'm talking about. The bands go BONK.
WZB,

Yep, I remember it happening in the 70's as I was still at home and a teenager. I was on 20cw, working EU, and then dead. Nothing. Absofrigginlutely NADA. I thought for sure my R4C had taken a powder.
No WWV, no nothing. Then slowly I started to hear locals all trying to figure out what happened. We all commiserated.
Remember, this was before the internet so there was no way to "check the solar page" to see what happened. I had never experienced it before, so I assumed it was a solar event, but we all wondered.
Old Sol is amazing. Good and bad. Maybe after this things will improve on the bands. I'm kinda tired of hearing the next state on 20. I want to hear some DX!

If I remember right there was a major black out in New York city and much of the east and lots of Canada in 1965. It was blamed on a solar flare at the time.
Seems it caused power stations to trip which over loaded one relatively small station that had to try to handle everything. Just a few years ago it happened pretty much the same way.
Don’t really remember the particulars and dates since it didn’t affect me directly it’s just a fuzzy memory here.

Perhaps the most horrible conditions I have ever heard, K index of 5 (now 6). It ruined my all-nighter. There was some good stuff scheduled to be on, too. What bad timing.

I bet when he jumps he can jump higher than other folks, since gravity is problably less on him than the rest of us, and he may be afraid of drifting off into space.............. so maybe some day he can fly up and sit in the trees,
so he can say " i flew up there "

Greg,
# # What are you trying to say/prove concerning this
CME? This phenomenon occurs all the time, granted
maybe not to the extent it is being predicted, but it
occurs.
# # The gloom and doom you are insinuating is really
quite funny. What do you think is going to happen as
a result of the CME? Please explain in detail all that
will happen to us common folk.
I don't mean, put a hyperlink up, I would like to hear
it from you directly. I would like you to explain it in your
words so we can truly appreciate the crux of this matter.
Put it in simple terms for all of us to understand.

Did you ever see that movie, where the machines started to come to life during a major CME on Earth? The movie where the semi trucks were attacking people stranded at a gas stop, somewhere down South. That phenomenon was cause by a serious CME that played with our atmosphere in a very serious way. Don't you think that something like that could happen? Or people could be exposed to high levels of radiation and die from that?
I'm concerned not only about the effects on radio, but people. We don't really know enough about these CME's to say what a major hit from one could do. It's not doom and gloom, it's concern mixed with some humor.
Don't forget about The 2004 Perseid Meteor Shower.

Yes I've seen the movie. Do I think it could happen?
No I don't, do you?
High levels of radiation? #I thought that was one of
wonders of the atmosphere, to act as a filter, to help
block out harmful radiation. #I'm also certain that
scientists are monitoring background radiation and are
studying this for future reference. I've never heard of
someone dying as a direct cause of a CME, have you?
I can almost buy the concern, notice I said almost.
This ole world has been exposed to numerous CME's in
it's life, as well as the human race. I have not seen any
scientific proof that CME's have caused the death of
one, ten, one hundred, or one thousand people. Until I
see some definite proof that a particular CME has
caused the death of someone, I am not overly worried
about it.
Now those with cell phones, satellite dishes might have
a problem, not to mention power grids(my line of work).
The humor aspect of your posts, well let's just say that
it has overstayed its welcome. It tends to make the
party attempting the humor to look a bit foolish and not
taken too seriously.

1) asteriods barely missing earth
2) solar flares
3) " boogers " found on MARS surface... where are they and who/what left them there ?
4) no telling what NASA has found at / near SATURN and it s moon s surface...sure the earth probes have already told them of how nice and peaceful that EARTH is, now what ever it IS will want to come to visit and take over EARTH.
That is all we need...alien life forms showing up at the Democratic National Convention...no one will recognise them or pay any attention to them...should blend in with the crowd extrememly well !!

Did You that Sun Spicules can affect radio transmissions?
Sun Spicules are usually associated with concentrated magnetic tubes called flux tubes, giant loops that link one region of magnetic polarity to another by arcing out from the surface and back to another spot thousands of miles away. The tubes are mostly vertical, but some are inclined away from the vertical, and that's where the sound waves tend to leak out
