Glen, can we PLEASE have some sort of moratorium, or better yet, a 'sanctioned' political thread?
QRZ has gone from a fairly decent Amateur Radio website/discussion forum to the campaign headquarters for 'Election 2K4'.
Honestly, I'm even (and I can't believe I'm even considering this) beginning to question the need for an 'Off Topic' area. It doesn't seem to do anything but foster ill-will, dissent and hatred among most everyone.
This sucks!

Well, as one of the "offenders", I can give you my perspective.
I wouldn't respond, if some of this stuff wasn't there, and didn't keep get being brought up over and over and over and over again. ...Politics seem to get injected into even the most mundane argument, which unfortunately will elicidate a response.

Larry,
Please don't read the political debates if they upset you.
Also, the political discussions don't exclude others from posting ham related threads.
If politics seems to be dominating this board, its because people would rather post about political issues instead of ham related issues just now.
There is still plenty of room for ham discussions, but everybody seems to be preoccupied with this year's election. I'm sure we'll get back to abnormal after the November elections are over.

Good point. I would like to point out that I, myself, have started ZERO political threads, and have started two non-political threads (one of which has gone over 20 pages) within the last 30 days.
I read posts that interest me, and I respond to those that I feel like responding to. You are welcome to do the same.

Why not go the way of the AM Forum. #It was being cluttered up with the same sort of off-topics, so a new sub-forum entitled "The AM Inquirer" was created to accomodate discussions that would be deemed inappropriate for an amateur radio related message board. #It has been very successful.
Maybe a "QRZ Inquirer"?

In the last month, we have had:
The release of a controversial film by Michael Moore
The handover of Iraq to a provisional government
The release of the 9/11 commission report
The announcement of John Kerry's running mate
The speculation on Bush's running mate
The approaching Democratic convention
Seemingly weekly kidnappings and beheadings in the Middle East.
Daily polling numbers showing a close back and forth lead for the presidency; often depending on which poll was taken.
All of these things go back to the talk of politics, but in reality, they are also all current events. People sometimes do discuss the events of the day. I myself enjoy the threads until they get nasty, and then I tune them out.
We are fast approaching what most folks consider the dog days of summer. There is very little to talk about and the Democratic convention and the aftermath of the 9/11 report will undoubtedly dominate the news cycle for the next week or so. We have code/no coded to death. We have BPLed to death. Yes we are discussing politics now, but that's what is on the table. For what it's worth, I did start a thread on Lance Armstrong yesterday, and a very entertaining one a few weeks ago on different occupations. Have faith! By the end of summer, we will have the Olympics, and I'm sure that other news will start to dominate the cycle again once the election is over in November. It's just the times we are in right now.

Dear KI4DYA,
I’m sorry all the non-ham subjects are upsetting to you. Perhaps you should frequent less agitating spots on the web. Or, call up your local cable company and get The Home Gardening Network, take a Xanax, or a nice glass or red wine. But to come out here and start calling for censorship, which is what you did, is offensive. If you had not noticed, the non-ham threads get a lot of activity with often intelligent discussions. In fact, I just read a wonderful post about the Civil War (a few years before ham radio) THAT WAS WRITTEN BY GLEN!!!!!!! I personality find it encouraging to hear hams discuss worldly topics. If you want dull radio stuff, turn on you Kenwood or Icom or what ever you have. And remember, in spite of what the political correct crowd wants to achieve, there is no right to not being offended in America. So stop crying for mommy ever time you read something you don’t like.

1.enter the computer room

3.apply power to the monitor, skip if connected to a common strip"
4.auto connect if Cable or DSL, or log-on if Dial up then,
5.open the browser
6.double click on QRZ.COM
7.double click on QRZ Forum
8.then double click "talk and opinions" or other areas
9.Then,double click a subject, could be anything
10th step: complain about the subject matter they did all this clicking for.........
Oh my, pardon me Im laughing so hard here I may have an 'accident'.

I don't have any control as to which forums exist on QRZ.com and which do not. Those are the sole responsibility of the owner of this site, Fred Lloyd, AA7BQ. You have to contact him at aa7bq@qrz.com to make suggestions.
As for the threads, only certain members of the staff "have to" read every thread and that is to make sure that the "rules of the road of QRZ.com" are being observed. Everyone else can choose as to read any particular thread or not.
Frankly, sometimes I have to bite my tongue to keep from making some "smart remark" or something similar in regards to some of the posts. I know that I really should bite my fingertips since any reply has to be made via typing on a keyboard. But, my rheumatoid arthritis gives me enough pain in my hands! Thus, some days I walk around with a tongue that looks like a piece of perf board!
But, that is part of the job of moderating!

I have to agree, if you don't want to be part of it, then just don't read it. I am all for a good political debate, I just think that, sadly, we have so much tension going on in this country, and the world for that matter, that many people have lost the ability to simply debate and jump right into attack mode. Which, of course, helps no one and only causes further division. That is why I personally have been distancing myself from the political debates on this website.
I have too much appreciation for this website, for Fred that made it happen, and for people like Glen that volunteer their time to keep tabs on things, to any longer allow myself to be mired in pointless bickering, or to get annoyed by it.
If people could simply debate the facts, and share their opinions, without the vitriolic hatred that has been so prevelant lately, I would be happy to participate. Sadly, this is not the case so I just stay out of it. If I see something that I know will head in a bad direction, I just don't look at it. That is the great thing about this wonderful country, you aren't forced to participate; hell, they don't even require people to vote if they don't want to. (I still do, and you should too!)
Life is too short to sweat the small s**t. If you don't like what you see, read, hear, then just don't support it or participate in it; it really is that simple.

Well as one who always feels it is my obligation to defend the right against the leftist lies and attacks,I think "if it's not broke ,don't fix it it". Some object to being called lazy, but to not be willing to click the mouse, when the context of a post is not personally appealing pretty much reaches the epitome and the pinnacle of the meaning of the word.
To KI4DYA,do not despair, you are but one of many who for what ever reason made the choice to join Ham Radio under the misapprehension that it was some thing it was never intended to be.It is fortunate that you became aware of your faux pas early and can get on with your life in areas that are more suited to your liking.I wish you luck in your further endevors, and hope your future investigations lead to fruition of a satisfactory HOBBY.
Unlike others I wanted to keep my comments short and to the point,I can understand Freds views, but I think the Kindergarten Sand box playground area is quite adequate for those who enjoy that level.I would not like to see the older more mature posters squeezed out of an area to sound off.The obvious alternate would be on the AIR,I think the Internet is the more appropiate place, since no one takes it serious any way and it is not Amateur radio.Again the last word is Freds, which brings to mind a plaque I had hanging in my office, "The Boss is not always right, but he is always the Boss". # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

K6BBC,
6 meters is also a great band, but a little more frustrating than 10 meters.I spent a couple of years playing on six before moving to 10, many hours listening into the noise for that faint signal. If you have a little experience and know a little about propagation, and have a LOT of patience 6 meters can be a lot of fun, I would not suggest 6 meters for a begineer, except for local contacts, as it can take some experience and some expertise and lots of patience and attention to achieve success.Except for those rare moments, most of the activity will be down on the Old Farts bands for the next couple of years, but when that rare opening occurs you have to be there and ready..... lots of luck #es DX #73, ORV

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif you might get LIBERACE and TINY TIM to sing ya a duet !!
Y'know.... this MAY sound like a sacreligious statement..
But what is posted here, on QRZ.COM is NOT ham radio! (GASP!!! WHEEZE!! sharp intake of breath in SURPRISE!!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
While I am diametrically opposite a few guys who post here.. I just BET... (well, I won't bet, but you know what I mean!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I just bet that if we QSO'd on the air we'd have a nice QSO.
WHY?? Because I've learned that there are MORE facets to folks than just (for example) the political side.
For example.. WX7B and I are (in case anyone had not detected it <BIG GRIN>) quite polar opposites.
BUT.. I've read his posts about NON-political topics and I know we'd have fun talking about them on the air.
Same for others here - even those who agree with me.. We'd have disagreements on some other issues, I'm sure.
DYA.. have fun in a less-real environment. However, I suspect that you're going to run into something like you see here with ANY group.
For.. as the saying goes.. 'We are NOT all of a piece!'
Regardless.. have fun... keep your ham ticket active..you MAY be back.. one day.. witha different perspective as you gain some experience in life.
We get a tremendous variety of political opinions here, virtually uncensored (unless you violate the road rules) and they can either be ignored, laughed at, thought about, responded to, or generate serious replies. At one time I also asked Glen about a new forum strictly for political discussion, but I have come to realize that that if we did, something would be lost. Hams have opinions just like any cross section of society. Anyone who has read the "what do you do for a living" thread should have realized the diversity and education levels that exist in the ranks. The only problem I see with political discussions here is when it gets to the personal level and this type of thing has declined quite a bit over the last few months.
As far a Lawence Welk is concerned, I always liked Jimmy Durante's version better.
"Good Night.....Good Night....Good Night / What can we say but Good Night / We had a few laughs....but its time to toodleloo...Au Reviour... Auf Weidershein...and Inka Dinka Doo / Good Night....Good Night....Good Night / What can we say but Good Night"
Nice band behind it also.

I also suggested a separate religion/politics board, and the idea was soundly defeated.
As for the concept of "sanctioned" political threads, that really worries me. China has "sanctioned" political discussions, and we should all remember what happened at a famous "unsanctioned" political event... Tiananmen (sp?) Square. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Have some compassion for the poor OM. What cured my keyboard courage was thinking how much grief was added to Glen in addtion to his current health conditions.

JSR:
My wife and I are due at Hartsfield International at 12:32 PM next Saturday afternoon (7 August). We will be in the Atlanta area until the 18th of August.
I may take my 2 meter FM mobile along with a magnetic mount antenna so that I can use it on one of my daughter's vehicles. Will have to "rig up" a cigarette lighter plug (which I definitely do NOT like to use!) so that I can just "plug it in". Not the best, but beggars can't be choosers! Don't have anything in the way of a portable except a couple of commercial handhelds and since she lives out in the "boonies" there isn't much chance of hitting much of anything anyway! Using the mobile from her upper driveway (she has two driveways with a single car garage at the lower one and a two car garage at the upper one) I can hit all sorts of things running 50 watts. When I cut the power to 5 watts can't hit a thing!
Will definitely "make" The Varsity in Alpharetta, but don't know about the main one downtown near the North Avenue Trade School.
By the way, when my middle daughter was just short of being two years old, we were visiting my wife's eldest aunt (who just passed away in January at the age of 101) who was living in the Lawrence Welk retirement village in Escondido, California. My wife's aunt and uncle took myself, my wife, and our then 2 daughters up to the country club for dinner.
The entainment that night was a "new" singer named Anna Connie. Lawrence Welk just happened to show up that night to audition her for his regular TV show (and he definitely liked her because in a couple of weeks she was a regular). Normally, if he was going to be around they announced it several days earlier to allow people to get their relatives together, etc. But, there had been no announcement that evening.
Mr. Welk saw my wife's uncle Scotty (with whom he had worked with on several charity events at the village) and came over and sat with us. He was there for the better part of an hour. Then, he picked up my middle daughter (then my youngest!) and carried her all over the dining room. There were at least 200 cameras in the room ("regulars" took a camera up to the dining room 'just in case' Lawrence showed up). Everyone was "snapping" photos of him and my daughter. But, you guessed it, we didn't have a camera with us! There are probably 1000 photos of Lawrence Welk and my daughter. However, we don't have a single one!
When Kelly (my middle daughter) was younger she thought that the experience wasn't really "cool". But, as she got older (she will be 31 next Tuesday) she got to realizing that it really was a "big" thing. Thus, she sometimes brags about her little "stint" with Lawrence Welk.

Glen, in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
to prove that the world was round. Lawrence Welk
came along and proved it was really square! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
And yes, I liked a lot of his music.
I will have to do some research on repeaters and ctss
tones for you. I programmed all of my stuff and rely
on my equipment to remember for me. I'll dig the info
up for you and get it to you before you leave.
We will have to see how your schedule works out when you get here. As far as repeater coverage, you will be
pleasantly surprised with what you can do with 5 watts and a rooftop mag- mount 5/8 Larsen in and around
Atlanta.

I have to agree with the initial post. #Between the pro-coder bashing by individuals with no klue, the political flames, it does get a bit tiresome. #
At least moderate some of the personal and ignorant attacks being directed back and forth.
I hardly see anyone addressing real issues like BPL.
The code debate is old news. Let's move on.
