Will all the flame wars and pig fighting matter when you're SK and six feet under? Think about how you can contribute than tear the Amateur Radio service down. A human life is incredibly short compared to how long the universe has existed. Thanks.
Well put JCY! Most important rules of Amateur Radio:
1. Enjoy Amateur Radio
2. Let others know how much you enjoy Amateur Radio
3. Ignore those who would seek to effect your enjoyment.

Spend an evening with a practicing Buddist. Puts things in perspective.
Even though life is suffering, there is too much suffering in the world. Compassion is the antidote for suffering.

How about taking my earlier suggestion and combining it with this one... sit down in front of the radio with a young person and see if you can spark some interest in ham radio. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Polarizing and simplifying the issues is certainly nothing new; this being an election year there are some that have it down to an art form, albeit a sick one.
There does seem to be much more worry and frustration these days, it's really no suprise that it has trickled down into amateur radio. We can only hope that the majority of amateurs out there (regardless of license class, political affiliation, or philosophy) will continue to show the positive side of amateur radio for emergency communications, homeland security, advancing the art and technology of radio, and for just the plain enjoyment of communicating with others that share a similar interest.

Yeah, what Brett said. You know, I don't think the members of either side of this great debate will change the minds of the other side. Simply not going to happen. I like to discuss the various issues myself, as the devil is in the details, and it turns out that we all have most of the same things in common politically. What I find really interesting is asking questions of both sides, and then really, really listening, and not trying to convince them to agree with me. After all, they are entitled to their opinion whatever it is. You know, the best elected representative I ever had was when I lived in Iowa. 13 years ago, in the leadup to the Gulf War, there was a vote looming in the Senate to give President Bush the authority to use military force. Senator Grassley spent many a weekend traveling around the state to town meetings. His stance was that he knew what his opinion was, but was asking people with opposing views to speak and he would listen; not convince them of his opinion, but listen to theirs. He was the only Republican to vote against using the military in that war, but he really had heard both sides of the issue, and listened to his people. That's called a discussion. How does that apply here? We don't listen enough. Folks on both sides have strong views on many issues that won't change. We should really LISTEN and hear what they are really saying. That's just good policy in national politics, office politics, and especially amateur radio. That's called respecting the other side's opinion and that's what makes a democracy work. I for one am glad we live in a 2 party system and that we get to do this; it keeps us honest! Can anyone out there name a one party system that worked better? I didn't think so.
Most of the banter I see on the boards starts nice, but then it turns to flame throwing in a big hurry, and that's where the listening stops and the peeing contest begins.

Yes, its a shame that people make up their minds and hold bitterly to a concept without ever listening to the other side at issue.
If there was more honest dialog and a genuine interest in finding common ground, most issues could be resolved without a fight.
But all too often, a pundant will blindly jump to one side of an issue as though it were their own issue.
Experience taught me about 3 years ago that there are 2 sides to every story. Had I gotten the other side before I launched headlong in defense of the side I chose to defend, I would definitely have taken the other side at issue.
Same goes for political discussions.

Please keep the DISTINCTION quite separate.
1) 'The Amateurs Code' is written specfically for, and about, how one comports oneself while OPERATING within AMATEUR RADIO.
2) The INTERNET (even those placed populated by hams) IS NOT AMATEUR RADIO as is the two are NOT equal, connected, or related - other than by the topical areas discussed or the fact that most of us are licensed hams.

Of course you could mix plasma, prune juice and vodka.

Mix plasma, prune juice, milk of magnesia and tequila;
You would have a "Mexican Stand-Off".

Tommy, again your self-assessment is 100% correct and I whole-heartedly agree with you. Whatever you were taking, or on, when you made the posting you should continue with. I don’t know what a pundant is, but a pundit is a “learned man,” and I question that remark in your posting. Otherwise, you are right on.
It is a shame that the experience you speak of that was self taught took you 3 years to realize that there are indeed 2 sides to every story. Now 3 years later, after much frustration, you finally see the other side of the issue when it is too late. All the Buds have moved on.

JCY - It's refreshing to read something like this. Although the internet is a great tool for learning and research, it can lead to misunderstandings, pent-up rage and frustration with a person who in other circumstances may have become a friend. Unfortunately we can't just sit down and have a beer and agree to disagree, in a civilized manner.
You probably know at least the rudiments of Buddhism and the law of karma. The same law is expressed in the holy Bible :
"Whatesover a man soweth, that shall he also reap"
(Gal 6:7)
