Lance Armstrong won his 3rd consecutive stage of the Tour de France today, and his 4th overall. His lead has increased to well over 4 minutes ahead of the next rider. With 2 stages left, he is a virtual lock to win his 6th consecutive Tour de France, setting a new record. What does this guy eat? Incredible. Cancer survivor, 5 tour wins, on the edge of number 6, dating Sheryl Crow.....IT'S GOOD TO BE LANCE!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
(thought we could talk about something besides code/no code and Kerry/Bush for a while, plus this is a great story)

It might not be Bush/Kerry or KC/NC, but what an opportunity to bash yet again the inventors of chauvinism. I heard the Germans and the French have been spitting on him. But what can you expect of people who eat a variety of cheese that's covered with a species of lice? And they consider us barbaric?

Godspeed, Lance!

Don't mess with Texas!

I have been watching the tour every day since it started this year.

Some folks have been booing him ( I really noticed it yesterday on the time trial) but what do you expect? He has locked the french out of their own race for 5 years and unless something drastic happens he will do it a 6th time. I have seen a lot of people with french and german flags cheering him on as well. If the french common folks are so anti-American I am suprised to see so many American flags displayed by the crowds along the roads.

The day before yesterday Robin Williams, who was riding in Lance's team car, did a little bit for the race reporters and was doing impressions of all the different languages that are spoken on the tour. He made the comment that it was important to do german because it is necessary to remember how to speak german from time to time in france.

I wonder how they liked that zinger.

In any case, GO LANCE.

EFA:

Don't you know, a Hoosier is a basketball player! Remember the movie staring Gene Hackman with the title of "Hoosiers"!

Of course this was just a fictionalized story of the Milan basketball team that won the state championship in 1952. The film didn't mention that they went to the finals the year before but lost the afternoon game to South Bend Central (the same team that they beat the next year to win the championship).

Unfortunately, a few years ago the "powers that be" in the school system of Indiana decided that this idea of every school playing every other, no matter how big or how small, wasn't "fair" and came up with the various divisions based on the size of the school. Of course this is "politically correct"! But, the vast majority of fans in the state don't agree. They point to Milan, a school that had about 60 in the total 4 years of high school beating one of the largest schools in the state!

Not to say that basketball wasn't "important", but for many years, especially in the smaller communities, the Chamber of Commerce, or some other organization, gave every male child a basketball and a hoop when they entered first grade!

I even played basketball! I was the 2nd tallest boy in elementary school (the tallest had two left feet and couldn't hit the side of a barn with a basketball if he stood 6 inches from it!) at 5'10" and played center in 5th and 6th grade. By junior high school some of the others started to "catch up" and in 7th grade I played forward. In 8th grade I played guard. By high school starting with 9th grade I played "church ball"! That is, I was too short to make the high school team! Had to run track (mile primarily) and cross country. Lettered all 4 years and got my jacket my senior year. Best time in the mile was 4:11.9. However, the winning time in the mile in the spring of 1962 in Indiana was 4:07.3!

The French sponsors have been saying that if he wins it again that he is going to "retire" from the event. However, according to Armstrong that isn't true! He may take next year off, and he may not, to concentrate on some other races.

But, considering the fact that the French haven't been too "keen" on United States citizens for many decades, one wonders if the French are trying to tell him something! They aren't too happy at an "American" winning, and winning, and winning!

They just announced on television that Lance Armstrong just won the Tour de' France for the sixth time in a row!

I knew that he was from Texas, now living in Austin. But, I hadn't realized that he was a "local" guy having been born in Plano, Texas. I live in the Plano Independent School District and the City of Plano city limits is about 1/2 mile north of where I live.

The officials of the race are still trying to say that he won't be back next year! But, he says that he is not through with the Tour! Only time will tell!

I just watched the final stage of the tour.

It was fun to watch 'Old Glory' being hoisted and hearing the United States National Anthem being played in Paris France.

I would have danced a little jig but my old knees hurt too much.

Thanks Lance, and thanks to the US Postal team.

Certainly not to take anything away from Armstrong, but I find these statistics kind of interesting. From the "New York Times" news service:

" Armstrong concluded the stage in 114th place, a safe 19 seconds behind the tumult of the mass sprint. His overall time for the 2,107-mile race was 83 hours 36 minutes, 2 seconds, an average of 25.2 mph."

To come in 6 minutes behind 1st place after 83 hours 36 minutes and 2 seconds on a bike, is NOT a whole bunch of difference, I might say !

Several of the top riders are super-humanly strong, if you ask me !

a friend just sent this to me

CNN is reporting that Lance Armstrong may be stripped of his 6th Tour de

France title.

In a random check for banned substances, 3 were found in Armstrong's
hotel
room.

The 3 substances banned by the French, that were found in his hotel room

were as follows:

(1) Toothpaste
(2) Deodorant
(3) Soap

The French officials also found several other items which they had never

seen before including a of testicle and a backbone...

I think I've been in enough countries, including France and Germany, to know that there are all kinds of people. I have always found Germans to be very gracious anywhere I encountered them. The French, on the other hand, have been far less so, especially in Paris. But I have never seen foreign visitors from those countires spat upon within this country. I certainly hope that was not done to you when you visited here.

"Sport is to unify not to divide. Keep that in mind."

That's the idea of sportsmanship, however, given that there are sports riots the world over, particularly in regard to soccer and rugby, I don't think I'm the one who needs to keep that in mind. Neither is the U.S. immune to the phenomenon, as NBA, NFL, and NCAA championship cities and colleges know too well.

I live in a Big 10 Conference city, the home of Ohio State University, my alma mater. Our big rivalry is with the state north of Ohio, Michigan. The roots of the rivalry actually trace back to a centuries old territorial dispute between the two states. Now we face off every year with the last football game of the season. And every year, win or lose, our local police have to intervene in rampant vandalism, arson, and other stupidity regardless who wins or loses the big game. Also, when the home team travels to the other school for the game, there is treatment similar to that visited upon Lance. And there have been reports of the same thing when the other school visits. There are more than enough idiots on both sides to make police intervention necessary.

"I admire Lance Armstrong, who also went through a cancer experience."
--which makes his victories the sweeter for his countrymen.
So we thump our chests on his behalf--way to go, Lance!

"I even admire more Daddy that got a double heard bypass, a serious cancer, severe back spine surgery and still rides his bike and many of the newbees cannot follow him. I love you Dad."

Well, about French people, I really cannot say they are my friends. I must say in general, because I have some french friends who are also ashamed of their fellow citizens. It is true that their behaviour is difficult to sawllow.

Weird enough, I live in a country that has been colonized by french much longer time ago than bombed by the US.

I rarely hear claims on the US, but still often hear about the French behavior.

And the problem still arise from their specific behavior TODAY.
