The CX is a low-pressure contest celebrating the older commercial and homebrew equipment that was the pride and joy of our ham shacks just a few short decades ago. #The objective is to encourage restoration, operation and enjoyment of this older "Classic" equipment. #YOU MAY USE ANY EQUIPMENT in the CX, however, new gear is at a distinct scoring disadvantage.

The CX will run from 3 PM EST to Midnight EST on Sunday Feb 10th (2000 UTC Feb 10 to 0500 UTC Feb 11).

Exchange your name, RST, QTH, receiver and transmitter model #(homebrew: send final tube or transistor designation) and other interesting conversation.

CW: Send "CQ CX"; Phone: Call "CQ Classic Exchange"
Suggested frequencies (+/- QRM):
CW: 3.545; 7.045; 14.045; 21.135; 28.180
Novice/Tech+: 3.695; 7.120; 21.135; 28.180
Phone: 3.880; 7.290; 14.260; 21.380; 28.320

The same station may be worked with different equipment combinations on each band and in each mode. #Non-participants may be worked for credit.

Scoring: Multiply total QSO's (all bands) by total number of different receivers plus transmitters plus states/provinces/DX countries worked on each band and mode. (Transcievers count both as transmitter and reciever.)
Multiply that product by your CX multiplier which is the total years old of all receivers and transmitters you used. #Three QSO's minimum per unit to qualify. #For transcievers, multiply age by two. #If equipment is homebrew, count is as a minimum of 25 years old unless actual construction date or date of its construction aritcle is older.

Certificates and appropriate memorabilia are awarded every now and then for the highest score, longest DX, most exotic eqiuipment, best excuses, and other unusual achievements. #A newsletter with scores and highlights is sent to all participants.

Send logs, comments, anecdotes, pictures, etc. to J.D. "Mac" MacAulay WQ8U (jmac6235@yahoo.com) or Jim Hanlon W8KGI (knjhanlon@email.msn.com)

Details of CX are provided on Pg. 109 of the February 2002 QST - however the date is incorrectly shown in that announcement (CX is Sunday, not Saturday)

Oh well...... no wonder I didn't hear anything on Saturday evening! #I guess the old ATC and BC-348 will have to wait until next year......

Oh well, had the NCX-5 ready to go. Listened Saturday, Nothing! Maybe next time. Not to many old radios from Vermont.

This was my third CX contest, and a good time it was.

After having numerous boat anchors on at the same time, #I walked out of the shack to get (yet another) cup of coffee, and found the hallway remarkably cold...it was only 72F out there !! # The shack was just a "tad" warmer...

I finally went on with my Hallicrafters HT-20 / Heath VF-1 VFO combination for the transmitter and my Collins 75A2 for the receiver. However, I figured out that if I put on all of my "boat anchors" that I could have 13 different stations and a multiplier of 1544! And, that didn't include using my Brent-Daniel crystal controlled transmitter that was built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service (now part of the Coast Guard) in 1929. That would have made my multiplier 1617! But, I just "settled" for the HT-20 / 75A2! That gave me a multiplier of only 104 (unfortunately, I can't add in the age of the VF-1).

Anyway, I didn't put in that much time, but I certainly had "fun"!

I worked a guy on 20m CW Sunday who was using a Meisner Signal Shifter. He was about 597C (bad chirp) and moving all over the band. I had to tell him the name of his transmitter was highly appropriate!

I don't even know who organized this, but wish it was a bit longer, like 0000 SAT through 2359 SUN, on a weekend where there's no other contesting going on, and promote it heavily for more participation. Could be a ton of fun, for the whole world. Imagine when FT101's and TS520's will be considered OLD IRON...wow, that day's not that far off, is it...?

Steve, what are we going to do with Glen, hogging all the boat anchors..!!!

Just got my MT-1 going last night. The MR-1 should be ready by this time next week. A lot of fun on AM, of course the KWM-2 won't do AM...Sigh!! It may be Controlled Carrier, but more power than the Kenwood 570SG on AM..!!
