E-mails with spoofed addresses are nothing new. #Get yourself a virus protection program and practice being aware of the ease with which virus infections of Windows computers can occcur. #Manage your e-mail wisely. #The three main routes of infection are: #e-mail, malicious web pages, and worms through open ports.
Hope this helps.
Chris
Virus? As in flu bug?
Hams have always been know to have bugs.
Sometimes we pass the bug we have to another ham and then he/she too will end up having the same bug we had.
I think that is the reason we use radio. That way we can keep our bugs to ourselves as close contact between hams makes the trading of bugs too easy.
I haven't gotten a bug from a ham yet, but I know I have given at least one to another ham.

Here, you can get your free copy of the AVG Anti-Virus - AVG Free Edition - and you will be able to use it without any limitations for the life of the product. You can also download free updates to get the latest program virus databases.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
You can get a "computer" virus from anyone. Sometimes the sender does not even know he sent it.
Remember the "loveletter" virus, that one loaded 23,000 corrupt files into my computer. Guess who sent it to me, my XYL. As soon as she opened the e-mail with outlook express, it automatically went to everyone in her address book. That's how that one worked.
About a month ago, I was on the FCC website reading documents for comments, and the computer started working really hard. I had no control, I had to shut down with "the button". After that, my windows program would not boot. After looking around in safe mode, I found that some driver files were gone. Was it a virus from the FCC? Who knows.

The AVG program works very well. In fact, it often catches new virus programs before the better known programs like Norton.
Also, if you are running Windows 98 or later (like XP) the Sysgate Personal Firewall (also free for personal use, not for business use) works very well.
I have both AVG and Sysgate running full time. Also, there is another free program called Ad-aware that will scan your computer and identify, then delete all of those little programs that "sneak" in that dump all sorts of data from your computer to all sorts of "inquiring minds" on the outside. This is especially important to run if you have a constant Internet connection (like cable or DSL).
I have found that if I regularily empty the Temporary Internet Files that I usually eliminate all but one of the programs that like to look around your computer. Sysgate usually blocks these from actually accessing my computer, but they still try and eliminating them from the computer is the only "safe" way of handling them. I also delete all of the cookies about every day. My wife uses the Internet connection more than I do and those little inquiry programs come down from all sorts of sources. Unfortunately, the virus protection programs usually don't do anything about that type of program. As such, I usually "dump" everything before I shut down the computer before going to bed! I definitely turn it off since I do have a cable connection and don't want things to happen during the night.
Also, in just a day, or so, of Internet operation I find that the Temporary Internet Files take up usually well over 40 MB of hard drive space! If you wait a while before "dumping" them, you can get some very large hard drive usage! In addition, you should "de frag" your hard drive every couple of weeks. At least check and see if your operating system says that you should defrag. It doesn't hurt to look at the section that tells you what items you can delete from your hard drive to increase your capacity.
There are certainly people who post regularily on QRZ.com that know a whole lot more about computers that I do. But, I have learned a "few" things to improve my Internet operations as well as computer use in general. I have had a personal computer since 1977 (Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I) and have learned somethings the "easy" way and some the "hard" way!

I caught a virus from a ham also, I makes me spend all my spare money and time on electronic stuff and wires and such and then spend every waking minute talking into this black box with a microphone.
Will I live? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Actually, I have and use both Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. One will very often catch something the other one missed.
Just remember to update the definitions frequently.

Humm, AVG has let a lot of things getting through.... at least at my place.
Now, when there is an email with a virus, the one written as the sender is often not the sender anymore. So, caution when pointing someone as the sender.... Don't fall in the old wife tales (ha ha Glen I could place it).

Viruii in email.. Hmm, I have a LOT of experience with that one.
And the guy doing it is (again) looking for an ISP http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
That makes the sixth one, and is it getting quiet, lol.
Headers can be faked, even to the point that if I didn't know what to look for, it would appear I was sending them to myself; My email is dgr8zod@mausershooters.org, and the "sender" has been display@mausershooters.org...a valid email address.
The only field that is untouchable in an email header, is the orginating IP. That's it.
But, most perps don't even take you down to that point to figure the truth, and leave the originating server field untouched.
Expand the headers, and take a look. Delete unexpected attachments summarily. Especially if they are pif, exe, com, bat, zlm, or the new format that is coming out next week.
If after checking, it did in fact come from the purported sender, copy the email address, and send a fresh message back. You may get a thank you in return..
ARIN Whois (http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl)
Paste an IP into the box, and you'd be amazed what you can find out..

I don't open attachments for any reason from anyone unless it is from someone I know and that person has alerted me beforehand that it is being sent.
I don't even believe messages coming from my ISP unless I call them to make sure that they did send it.
Somebody out there has been "spoofing" callsigns and you cannot assume that a particular message actually is from a ham, and even if it IS from a ham, and you don't know that person do not trust it!

Speaking of SpyBot, a new version came out a bit over one week ago. v1.3 If you are using 1.2 the update check will not alert you. Check using the original URL for the site. If you did not bookmark it earlier, I found it with a search engine using "spybot 1.3".
I caught 64 more dangerous files using 1.3 than the old version had found an hour before, and it was up to date for definitions.

I keep saying...
"When you have email with someone
you are having email with every person
they have ever had email with..."
And at those swapmeets, when you're at at the table where the guy is selling all the good stuff and you are all squooshed up against that big sweaty guy in the dirty tee shirt and cut off overalls who is so sweaty that he feels like ice when he squooshes his arm up against your cheek..(ugh)..as you bend over to look at the best item on the table, well he probally has a real virus and now you have it too.
At the swap or in the net...be careful.

How about the check out counter at your local grocery or wal-mart ? Who ever was ahead of you 2 hours ago still left live germs on that aurface.
You think that counter person is gonna sanitize that counter that every one has left their items on ? Sure, it may have been done during slow hours 2 - 4 am that morning...but now it is 4 in the afternoon !!
At least pay telephones are almost gone, they were notorious for being nasty in the handset !!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
Door handles to businesses are also filthy.
