View Full Version : Hours Talking vs Posting on QRZ
Ok, quiz time folks.
Lots of good discussions on QRZ -- sometimes even a few pertain to amateur radio. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
When do you read (and respond to) posts? While you're using your radio? Spare time? Or is this a full time mission in life?
What I'm wondering is how many people spend more time posting on QRZ than talking on their amateur radio equipment?
Feel free to have fun with this one http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I spend much more time on the air than online; I just happen to have the luxury to be able to be online more often than the average person.

I by far spend more time on QRZ than on the air. The reason is plain and simple, my current license level is not my main interest in amateur radio. Unfortunately, time contraint's prevent me from doing what I really want to do. (homebrewing and portable QRP CW) The flip side is that I have much more access to the internet.

My internet line is open all the time, but I am usually occupied elsewhere on the computer.
If I thought that I would hang around these threads for the greater part of any day, including one of six feet of fresh snow against the windows and doors, I would gladly open a vein and follow those ancient Eye-ties who stole quietly off to the bath....
I do, however, peek in at odd intervals and drop a little spleen or merely shake the cabbage in wondering disgust at some of the foolishness I find scattered about.
Diatribes can be fun. Wit that is keen and able to deliver the rapier riposte is appreciated. Alas, like Urdu or Siwash, not often encountered. Mostly these political threads are demonstrations of the mace and bludgeon, and often take on the reflection of matins being chanted by rote, a humdrum nostrum rather than a point of intellect.

You too huh? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
You gotta love MIV though. You don't have to understand every word he says, but you gotta love him.

I work at home on my own servers, so I'm here about 14 hours a day... and QRZ is on in one window 24/7... If I'm sitting here I keep 1/2 of one eye on it...
and as much as I like a good argument there is plenty of good material here! hehehehe....

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Well, in a way, you have to DIVIDE your question into 2 basic areas :
1) those with the computer and radio in seperate areas
2) those with the computer & radio in same room
me, it is in 2 seperate areas, on different floors of this house trailer ( hee hee )...radios in the basement... computer on main floor / opposite ends of the building
I would say that on a normal ( can I use that word legally ) day I am on qrz.com no less than 2 hours; that is including reading the posts of a thread; then actually preparing a reply, then going thru the reply to be sure it says what I think I want it to say...then maybe actually SENDING it...then ( in some cases ) seeing it posted and wanting to change something in it and going thru that mess.
No I aint no writer ( far from it ) nor an I extensively good at phrasing the english language to meet minimum standards of either the writer ( me ) or the potential reader ( you )
I dont mean to come off as NEGATIVE as some of this stuff looks, but it happens.
Thanks for your cooperation. It means a lot.

Ah yes! #MIV is known to be something of a sesquipedalian
with rampant pedantic tendencies. #That is until he conjured up that image of Janet Reno, nude! #
(You'll never live that one down!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
N0PU, Harry, is a good old fashioned curmudgeon who has also
earned his stripes.
FT hasn't checked in on this yet, but he has vast experiences
and viewpoints that are evocative.
Then there is JTY, who is rapidly becoming known as AE6IP
North! (My apologies to Marty) # http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
I just wish we could stay on ham radio topics a bit more.
We would all be a bit more civil and we would be able to rest
up for the big climax coming in November, instead of getting
all worn out from four months of foreplay!
I can have a dream, can't I? #

I don't know if I should take offense or not... I'm not really THAT old...
I guess I'll just take honor in having EARNED a label... That works... it suits my sensibilities...

Harry, I did not say you are an old curmudgeon.
You are an old fashioned curmudgeon, you know, sort of a
"boat anchor" style curmudgeon! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
And of course you must have your stereo-typical label.
How else can people pidgeon hole us? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

curmudgeon = a crusty, ill-tempered, and usually old man
See old by definition.... and my mother would tell you I have been that way since I was 10... see..SHE's that way... not the MAN part, just the crusty and ill-tempered...
I come by it honestly...

I post on QRZ more than I get on HF because I recently lost my home QTH station and am limited to apartment-style setups. Also, I find the level of discourse on QRZ to be superior to what I find on the ham bands when it comes to roundtable-type discussions. Here there is a moderator and the real offensive stuff gets removed or the hams are banned. On the air, anything goes, few are really afraid of the FCC. And especially in cliquish-nets, it is difficult to gain entry into the discussion at all. Here there is always a welcome mat out for all newcomers to add their thoughts, and I really appreciate that.
On air more than QRZ when I am home, vice versa when i am out of town. And you guys leave MIV alone. He and Mark Miller are my two best favoritest chat pals.
It used to be Tom but we're both under restraining orders...

Bout 50/50. I've got my computer and radio station on the same desk, so I usually do both. Once I get past the parental issues surrounding an HF dipole, I have a feeling it'll tip the scales. That and when I can actually use my truck radio while mobile. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
