Howdy all! #Just want to know what you think of ops who run SSB in the AM windows. #I know it is legal but so is running CW in the phone portion of the bands. #To me it is something a good op does not do. #

All responses from all sides are appreciated.

The ARRL has been running bulletins from W1AW on 7290 KHz (they even recognize this as an AM frequency in their bandplan) for decades using lower sideband! They have several "excuses" why they are doing so.

Some unstated "rules" in Ham radio are known as gentlemens agreements for a reason. Unfortunately there seems to be fewer and fewer gentlemen out there.

OH MY GOODNESS!

How the heck did a post about ham radio get into QRZ?
Does this mean that the hardware store is not going to have
bread and milk any longer? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

STH, if they go back to buying bread and milk in this old
hardware store, may I open a Varsity concession here?
Liberals and conservatives both get hungry. We could pick
up a lot of BUX!!! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif WADDA YA HAVE??

You know I see plenty of amateur radio topics on this site; but you have stumbled into the 'talk & opinions' forum, an often different animal altogether. Enjoy.

Try 29.000-29.100 MHz AM even during this low part of the solar cycle! Works great for local and line-of-sight contacts, and you do not have to worry about SSB ops at all. Hear QRM? Smile, and QSY! There's plenty of room in the HF bands if you look for it. Or, switch to SSB, and introduce the sideband ops to AM, as newer rigs have it as an option. Speak kindly towards the SSB operators, and you just might win a convert to the AM mode. It's not only for restored tube rigs. It could also be that the ops near 7290 kHz think you cannot hear them, or they are simply unfamiliar with the band plan.

And, as for operating CW in the SSB portion? Out of dozens of CW contacts on 28400 kHz, when I only had that transmit crystal for my Hallicrafters HT40 transmitter -- only a small handful of operators complained. One op even interrupted a crossmode QSO I had with an SSB op to tell us we were "illegal", and had to either both switch to SSB, or go down to the CW-only portion to continue in Morse! We asked what his call was, and he said it was none of our business -- just call him a "concerned Extra"...and he left without giving his call letters. Both of us had a laugh out of that! We continued with our crossmode contact, and had no problems after that.

The HFPack group encourages just these kind of cross-mode CW to SSB contacts when band conditions are marginal. As an example, they use 18157.5 USB and 18158.0 CW to get through when the band just barely supports SSB. These operators use portable shortened antennas, makeshift grounds, and QRP -- and sometimes you just need to use CW to get through to make the QSO work.

With band conditions improving on the low bands, and vanishing on the high HF bands, this is a good time to practice excellent amateur radio etiquette. Smile, take a deep breath, and be glad that when you hear QRM, it's very likely unintentional. Move down, say hello politely, and ask them to join in, or ask if you can join their group. Use the low spot of the solar cycle as an advantage, too. Go portable with your restored 10M AM rig, and try mountaintopping, prearranging contacts with hams within line-of-sight.

Most of all, have fun!

Well, in the end, if SSB in the AM areas is legal, then I guess they have the right to be there if they so choose, dont they? Forgive me, but do I detect another pointless gripe session brewing?

As a side note, I find it amousing all the griping I see here about a few truckers using 28.085, and going on about how mighty Riley is gonna mosey into town and clean up the bad guys, considering that I scan 28-29 Mhz frequently and hear nothing but the occasional SSB QSO and, of course, the latin amreicans all over the band. Forgive me, but sometimes this board reminds me of my son when he was 5, stomping his foot and screaming in anger because he wasn't getting his way.

So, the gauntlet is thrown and it's on now...

Your oppinion is duley noted and appreciated even though it was given in attack mode.

Attack mode? One of the favorite expressions of the liberals, my friend...Actually, I think your skin is, perhaps, a little thin? I actually read and understand the posts here. If you read my post, you understood that I was expressing an opinion. Take my word for it, if I wanted to attack, you"d damn sure know it.

See? I told you it was on...

LMAO.

Do not forget to write your anti-BPL letters,
encourage new amateur radio participation and generally be nice
to one another. That is all.
