View Full Version : UPDATE::QRZ Site Report
Howdy folks!
It's been a hectic week here at QRZ headquarters and for the most part most of the comments about the new site look has been positive.
We've really been trying hard to keep it as lean as possible so that it can serve the most people in the shortest amount of time - in other words, no waiting!
We received a lot of complaints about the Frames layout and after a lot of deliberation we finally decided to try it without frames for a while. We hope that everybody likes it, if not, I'm sure we'll hear about it :-)
Meanwhile, we've added several other little goodies. Among them:
<ul>
Callsign search box at the top of every page. The cursor goes there automatically (most of the time).
UTC Date and time at the top of each page.
Login/Logout status at the top of the page (we're still tweaking the bugs out of this)
DX Cluster now working again with support for QRZ usernames.
Image Attachments now working in the Swapmeet area. Pictures! Yeah! (try not to post giant ones!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
New /gifs/mainmenu.gif button on the top bar takes you to our first-ever Site Map!
[/list]
We'll continue to tinker and hopefully improve as the weeks go on. I just can't help myself sometimes...
Thanks for your patience and support

I really like this layout the best of any so far! I know the frames site reduces server overhead a bit, but this site is plenty fast.
While you're tweaking, I wish you would consider having the call sign lookup automatically bring up the detail information. I almost always look up the call sign, then immediately click the "Detailed info" link.

"While you're tweaking, I wish you would consider having the call sign lookup automatically bring up the detail information. #I almost always look up the call sign, then immediately click the "Detailed info" link."
Me too. An even better idea would be to place all look-up info on a single page so that no further clicking is necessary. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I agree with the auto detail idea, all else is very well executed . http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

How about bringing back the threaded reply structure? #That way if a topic goes in an undesirable direction (for the reader), he doesn't have to wade through all those messages to read the ones that stay on the subject he wants.
Regardless, thanks for all the hard work you folks do to keep this site current and worth going to.

I agree with what's been posted here...I like the new format of the site. The new forum format may be more to read through, but the page doesn't have to reload every time you want to go up a level in the thread.
Placing the detailed info on the same page as the callsign and address would be nice, but I'm happy with the site the way it is currently...

As everyone out here is in agreement with QRZ's new look, one thing that would really be neat is to rig it up somehow so anytime we logged on to this site that we would be issued extra "Frequent Flyer" miles/credits!!! Then you'd have to beat off everybody with a stick!!!But getting back to the subject @ hand, the "NEW LOOK" is grrrrrrreat!!! #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif .........JD/nn6ee

In late December/early January, I send an email to the site administrator requesting a "Details" button next to the "Get Callsign" button. It seems to me this would be the easiest way to please everyone.
Those of us who would like to go straight to the details would click one button and those who only need basic information would click the other. It would be a great way of being able to please everyone at once.
I hope Fred can find time to implement the change. From the post above this looks like one last area for increasing custumer satisfaction.

The new site is teriffic.:0
Just one more thing that I think will be a tiny improvment.
When you look up a call the class of the license should be right there.
Now that the search box is on every page it will make looking up a class call faster.
The site has a nice lay out and runs fast here on a 120 MHZ machine.
Great work

I have a sugestion for the site. Dump the link to Maps on us site and if possible use Mapquest. ( I am not sure if you can link to Mapqest the same way you link to Maps on us or not). The reason I suggest this is that Maps on us is fine for finding a QTH in the city but it falls on it's face when trying to locate a rual QTH. MapQuest on the other hand finds rual QTH's everytime. It is a better system and gives a lot more detail.
just my 2 cents

Being pretty much a novice at the terminology used on some web sites, a few questions:
1) What are "Frames"
2) What does the button "Quote" refer to and what does it do? Is it the same as "Reply"?
3) What are "iB" buttons?

Well....I find it horrible!
It's hard to look at and,I really don't like the layout at all!
It looks kind of like the gaudy ugly looking Netscape 6.X stuff, ARGUHH!
I never could understand why people that deal with computer hardware/software find the need to constantly change, modify &,upgrade either software or,hardware ?
Is this some kind of an incureable disease or something or,do they have too much time on thier hands? 8-)
Anyway I DO appreciate the time & effort that you put into the site.
No matter what it looks like it serves the amature community well ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Thanks & 73 !

GREAT!
I prefer the less frames layout. I guess I just can't get used to all of the columns on a web page. When I want to scroll, it seems the rat isn't in the right place. I actually use the KEYS more than the rat (old DOS duffer.)
btw, where is the QRZ LogBook now? #
Keep up the good work.

1. Frames are where the web page is broken up into different parts with separate scroll bars. Sometimes web pages may have some sort of index on the left hand column that you want access to no matter where you have scrolled on the main frame. Some web pages have a curious trick, though, when you jump to a web page at another site; the new site gets loaded inside a frame.
2. I clicked on "Quote" to answer your questions. This is a reply, that stuck you're quote into my reply.
3. Not sure, but I think iB is an icon from Mr. QRZ's IkonBoard software. Kind of an advertising gimic from the vendor.

Hey, nice job on the web page there. I was wondering what happened, thought my computer changed for a bit.
Like everything else, change is difficult, but I am sure you have improvements that will make it easier to get around. Keep up the good work there and 73, de John K4SFD
