Congratulations FCP,
Welcome to Amateur Radio!
I know you will rise proudly to the "New Standard" of The Amateur Radio Service and leave the rest behind.
We speak a different "lingo" here. Its called, "No Lingo at All". CBese is gone forever.
We have rules here. Its called Part 97. I know you will comply and enjoy the privilege of REAL RADIO for as long as you like.
To enhance your enjoyment and to strengthen your level of respect for amateur radio, find a service that you like and contribute what you can.
I serve as an amateur radio storm spotter for the National Weather Service in Des Moines, Iowa. Its one of the most enjoyable and challenging things I've ever done in amateur radio. Most of all, the National Weather Service regards us as one of their greatest public resources. They are extremely appreciative of amateur radio! And we are very pleased to serve.
If storm spotting isn't your cup of tea, fear NOT! There are myriad other valuable services that amateur radio provides. Just find one that suites you.
Again, welcome aboard! I look forward to working you sometime.

Welcome, Welcome! I too came from the ranks of the lowly "Class D" radio service. I have been a ham for 2 years and I think that I just may put another CB back in my car. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
WELCOME! WELCOME!!
You have passed through a door and entered a new and exciting world. A world where there are MORE places to explore and operate (legally) than you can ever hope to find BUT you'll have a BLAST trying to do so!
A world where you can PROUDLY identify who you are by your name and your callsign (which will, by the way, become more a part of you then your name because only YOU have that callsign! HI) without having to worry about whether or not some (un)expected knock at the door may occur one day.
A world where every time you learn something... something ELSE pops up to pose a question.
In short.. ham radio is like the Thomas' English Muffin! There are more nooks and crannies than you can EVER explore but you'll have a blast trying to do so!
WELCOME!
Now.. the fun part.. Coming up with personalized phonetics for your callsign! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
(I'm sure you have already done so and I'll not enter my ideas)

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Welcome Jack...3 questions :
1) have you figured out what phonics to use for your call ?
2) When are you planning to upgrade to General ( which should be a piece of cake ), and then to The Extra class ?
3) Do you have 6 meter and 2 meter ssb capacity ; if so maybe we can talk before you upgrade ?
Any how, looks like you got a great callsign !!

So far i have come up with nothing yet but i havent gien it much thought, for the General ticket my plan is to have it before the end of the year. As for rigs I have a 2m kenwood all mode but its only 10 watts. I bought it cuz i liked the looks of it and it was cheap, I ordered a tone board for it so i can trip the local repeaters. However my wife is planing to get me a FT 847 for some kinda holiday, after I buy her new bike lol. I also have a FT 101 and looking for the 6m and 2m transverters for it. For FM rigs I have a Yaesu 212RH that works great and a new VX-2 HT. But the 847 is in my future for sure.

Congratulations Jack. If you think it took so darn long to get your callsign, be glad you're in the age of the internet. I took my Novice test in Nov 1974 and my call arrived in the mail on 12 Feb 1975!
Things sure have changed. For the better at least in that case.
The advice you've gotten here is all good. The biggest thing is in ham radio, there's something for everyone.
Just don't say "10-4 good buddy!"
And yes, I remember "7 mary 3 and 4" also. Funny, my kid watches that on reruns now.
Good luck.
