Bob W4PG in FL checked in and I gave the reins over to him as he'd hear stuff on the west coast I can't hear.

Fun to work a lot of you!

BTW running 1 kW into 8L at 55' and nothing very special...it's all the band. And the band is definitely changing quite a bit.

Steve NL7W was 59 from AK off the side of my beam but wasn't hearing the others for some reason. Flaky condx.

Just took a quick listen on 14.245 (I'm cooking Thanksgiving dinner, and doing laundry) - I'm hearing things, but they're not very strong.

KD8HLY - Arlo is still in the land of the living, and he's still performing. A couple of his kids are in his backing band.

Beam direction plus conditions can equal strong or no signals.

A hint for anyone who takes over a net control, even an informal one:

Don't use ahhhh, uhhhh, ummmm, or any of those. Band can go out while you're doing that and it's just a time waster.

Great training is using a tape recorder: Record yourself during a transmission and if you ever hear yourself using any of those, you won't for much longer.

Old broadcasters tip: We were allowed to use a filler like that once, and if we ever used it again, we were fired and replaced by someone who didn't.:p

Same here - got on late - LONG day in the kitchen and giving rides in the car so never
got to the shack. S9+15 on all low bands here + lousy sigs. Not playing radio tonight. Rats.
But glad it worked out well for a bunch of folks here...

I listened in a couple of times on a variety of frequencies. I only ever heard anything at all on 20, and y'all were too weak to copy.

C'est la vie!

Nice to meet you Tom.
Also nice to meet NL7W, both on 20.
The So. CA people were too weak here in No. CA on 20 to work.
No time to work 40 due to Turkey.
Will be looking forward to New Years!

Tom, ASE Missed that.

Tom, ASE Missed that. It was good to talk to you also. It's always good to talk with lots of new people. That's why the net is so much fun.
I look forward to more new voices at New Years when there's not as much hustle and bustle.:)

Nice to meet you too, Bob. :)

It was finally good to hear Sue, AF6LJ, decently this year also.

Her SB-220 (named Oscar) works for her. It's amazing what some additional watts will do for a signal.

Well I have the best antenna I can for this location, so the next logical thing.......

So if we eat Turkey again for a second day, are we required to have another Turkey Day net?

An amplifier with handles on the tube?

An amplifier with handles on the tube?

I used to think about that, but then realized my service panel is maxed out especially in summertime with the A/C running and the two pool pumps and the spa heater and...and...and... I don't have an extra 30A at 240V available for a "tube with handles" type amp, I'd have to upgrade the panel and call the electric company. And all it would do is help keep a frequency clear, since the big amps don't come with remote receiving systems.:p

Do you have natural gas?

get a generator and dedicate it to the Big Amp...

Yeah, we do have natural gas service but this is over the top.

"Hearing" them is more important, and with 1 kW I can usually work anything I can hear, with very rare exceptions.

Even at our big M/M contest station we never ran illegal power, and often ran 1 kW PEP out or less (even in the "unlimited" category) because it was common to tune up one place and then run up and down the band, where the output power would sag without retuning. Hardly mattered.

Our solution to "keeping the frequency clear" was usually to transmit into multiple beams aimed in different directions using the WX0B StackMatch switch and critically cut cables, but then only receive with the one antenna that pulled in the signals best. To keep the domestic stations out of our hair, we'd split the power between a 4L beam aimed towards most of the U.S. and a bigger beam aimed towards where we were actually working, then using an automatic relay switch to receive only with the bigger dedicated antenna. The "other" antenna was our FCU (Frequency Clearing Unit) to help prevent encroachment of QRM. That's legal, and works well if you have a lot of towers.:p

Antennas are the first step... preferably stacks, with some minor off-azimuthal spray to keep the itchy fleas away. Or a phasing arrangement that allowed for two towers with same band antennas to distribute the TX signal to populated areas that weren't being "worked," in order to keep the QRM down.

The first KW is the one that matters! Extra power is only fancy frosting.
