View Full Version : BPL - Maybe it's a Bait and Switch?

I think that you're on the right track, but I see a little different scenario.

They have interference problems so they go to the FCC and say, "you have to allow us higher emission levels so that we don't lose our investment." #Then they use those higher levels to expand their network to lower population density areas.

"CONSPIRACY THEORY ! CONSPIRACY THEORY ! AAAAOOOGAAH AAAOOOGAAH DIVE DIVE ! "

I don't know if we need to make a conspiracy out of it. I am of the mind that those that are pushing BPL, actually are so misinformed ( stupid ? ) that they don't believe that any interference is going to be caused ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

Why is that?

Theory 1: #They want our spectrum:

If BPL malfunctions due to interference from hams, especially if hams are caught sabotaging the systems, then everyone will get peeed off at the hams, and hams will be shut down, and BPL can then grab the spectrum. Ham allocations are about 10% of the spectrum between 3 and 30 MHz. Could BPL function without that 10%? Sure. #Then why do they want it? Because that is profit margin. That extra 3 MHz of spectrum gives them enough extra bandwidth to add 10% more subscribers without investing in any additional hardware.[/QUOTE]<span id='postcolor'>
What about interference from users of the other 90% of the spectrum which includes TV channels 2-6? Public utitlities in the 30-50 MHz range. Maritime and aeronautical mobiles, FEMA at 5 MHZ.

Maybe they figure the 10% of spectrum allocated to amateurs is all they need for successful BPL.

No, no, either you or I am not understanding the nature of this QRM. Based on my understanding of the beast, it is NOT a bunch of clean sine-wave carriers sitting on specific frequencies. Far from it, it is a bunch of spikes that come and go over a wide range of frequencies, and spikes cause interference at not only their fundamental frequency ( of which there are many! ) but on all kinds of harmonics as well. Thus, when a BPL signal is modulated with digital data, the result is HASH, that is seemingly random in nature, and spread all up and down the RF spectrum.

They can talk all they want to about &quot;suck-out&quot; filters and the like, but if BPL gets a firm hold, you can kiss the HF bands, AM radio, several low frequency Public Utilites services ETC ETC. GOODBY ! It's NOT just our frequencies that will be affected!

That's my understanding!

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ...if BPL interferes with the reception of your favorite HF frequency, then you can go buy one of these &quot; BPL FILTERS &quot; ( only $99.95 plus shipping and handling ), we have to CUSTOM make it for your particular model of radio ( not interchangable with other models or manufacturers ) [ IF YOU HAVE A YEASU FT - 840 IT WONT WORK ON A YEASU FT - 1000D , OR A KENWOOD, OR ALINCO OR iCOM ] ...so these manufactureers of these FILTERS can make mucho - bucks for a long, long time...not sure if the FILTER will be installed IN the rig, or externally like a antenna tuner, or power meter or an amp .... get yours before the day ends...order today !!...I can see ads like that coming out soon after BPL gets going good.... ---kd4amg---

We may even be able to count on our &quot;good-buddie&quot; friends down between 26.965 and 247.405 to help us out. If they couldn't crash a BPL system, no one can, especially those that run several kW... or will the BPL powers that be notch out that freq. range?

&quot;BPL QRM filter, guaranteed to knock interference to your radio down 60 dB ! Simply install this little device between the back of your radio and your antenna system. Works best if used with a good ground !&quot;

Yup, you got it, a box with two coax sockets mounted on opposite sides, and NOTHING in between ! Think I'll make my fortune, and be able to retire ? Huh Huh ? ? ?

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ag3y...you swiped my idea...( oh well )...i was gonna plan on one with a off/on switch, a little red light bulb and run off 12 volts dc, but then folks would tear that part up, hook it up backwards, etc ( you know how those appliance operators are )... ( lol ) i wuz a gonna put a rat turd inside, so after a while the stray rf would make it stink, and smell really really bad, but i 'd just tell them &quot; the more BPL it filters, the worse it smells &quot;....man you could make a zillion bucks for $99.95, plus the fact you would have to make a different box for each model of each brand of radio...some folks own 4 - 7 HF rigs..., with nuthin but a rat turd inside !!... using so-239 connectors at each end, the size would be about the size of a pack of cigarettes if that big.... 3 - 4 air holes drilled in one side to let the &quot;smell out &quot;... ( lol )...whew you would make more money in one year that that guy on nbc tv that tells everyone &quot; you're fired &quot; !!....( donald trump )...---kd4amg---

BPL is a white elephant that's short-time at best. What are they offering in Cincinnati -- a megabit for $30. The incumbent telcos and cable companies won't tolerate any defections and you'll see the BPL systems priced right out of the markets.
