Hello from sunny CO! A friend has been letting me use his FT-8100 rather than have it collect dust in his shack. The rig is Great! I am thinking about making him an offer on it but would like to find out:
-the history on these rigs as another friend said the 8100 has had a lot of problems
-a reasonable idea as to what it would cost to have the dial lights fixed
-what would a fair offer price wise
Thanks and 73 to all!

I'm not aware of any problems that people may have had with their 8100, but I've had mine for over 2 years and haven't had a bit of problem with it. I love this radio and wouldn't have anything else. I have no idea what it would cost to get the lights fixed. I couldn't imagine that it would be a whole lot though. I bought my 8100 new and paid right around $380.00 so maybe that will give you an idea of what to offer your friend. HTH.

Jon,
# # I have 3 8100s, having bought the first one in Sep '97. #Features and ergonomics-wise, they're the best radio you can find today. #I love the way they operate. #(Yaesu could have added direct keypad frequency entry though.) #HOWEVER, all 3 of my radios have developed problems and it's in the "motherboard" or whatever you call it in radios. #Yaesu got a bad batch and most 8100s I've heard of have had problems. #Fixing them is like looking for a needle in a haystack according to a technician I trust implicitly. #Yaesu wanted $342.00 to fix the one I just sent in (I told them no thanks, just return it.).
# # Most 8100s are going for somewhere around $300 on Ebay, but given their history, I'm not sure I'd buy one now. #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
