View Full Version : QRZ.COM QSO Party

Has anyone here ever toyed with the idea of having a QRZ.COM QSO party? You know, the "registered" users having an XXX hour "contest", like Straight Key Night, to meet on the air? The exchange could be like "Name, RST, age, year licensed, QRZ "topic of interest", hour per day obsessing about topics, etc...
It might be fun; a way to actually chat with the people you read about all the time.
How about it?
paul
p.s. CW only, after all we are men.

I just realized it said "XXX". That wasn't the point, you know!! Maybe "X" would have been better. Although a QRZ.COM XXX QSO party could be pretty interesting!

Excellent idea.
The exchange should be:
RST + status ( Member, Troller or banned) http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
No, I think it would be a fine idea, and better to hear the people than to read their vents

I alway's thought it would be a great idea. But it would have to be for generals or higher.
It's a good idea. Just keep in mind several things.
Should be short.. perhaps 12 hours or so..
watch the dates.. the calendar is QUITE full of activites that many of us already participate in - esp. the CW events.
Perhaps something informal
I like the exchange.. RST and QRZ.COM status - (A)dmin, (M)ember, (T)roll, (B)anned.
Now for points.. 10 points for (A), 5 points for (M), 50 points for (T) and 100 points for (B),.
The T and B caetgories would have be verified on the QRZ.COM members list. Judge of final determination willbe K9STH.
Why more points for B or T? simple if you have the guts to get on and use that category.. we should reap the benefits! HEH

I would love to participate. It will have to wait until I upgrade in March!!!

A contest on HF would be very nice, but if we keep it on VHF (which means techs can join) the QSOs would be quite limited
What do you think?

All of the Amateur Members of QRZ can use VHF...
Planning it during the summer on 6 Meters would allow most members to contact each other, if it was over a long enough period of time.
Even on 2 Meters, during a band opening, more than a few members would talk to each other.
As the sunspot cycle continues to decline, VHF and UHF propagation like Ducting may be a more "enticing" way to work DX, anyways. 6 Meters may be a bit of a challenge to work.
This could be fun. Every once in a while I will have a QSO with someone who has looked at my posts on QRZ.com and it usually turns into a nice chat.

Do I get 'multipliers' because of my location?
K3STX
01-27-2004, 06:59 PM
Sure, it would be a "short" contest. I think the number of participants is something in the hundreds, right?
I was thinking HF, of course, since it would be hard to work all these guys in one night on VHF. I only mentioned CW since I think it would be kind of fun to hear these guys fists, but that's just cuz I'm a CW guy and a fist can be as distinctive as a voice.
I like the extra points for Banned, and also we can get Moderator points, bonus points for DX as HEU mentioned, all sorts of things. Maybe have a few hours for the phone part of the test, then another few hours for the CW part of the test.
paul
Do you get like extra points if your call or name appeared on any code/no-code list generated by a disgruntled poster? Make it like a multiplier or something!
Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Sponsor a CW and a SSB contest.
"QRZ, QRZ.COM"
That's a tongue twister!
or on CW: CQ, CQ QQC!

There can be all kinds of multipliers. If you have been scolded by Glen in public, add 20 points. If only in private add 5 points. If you have made a particularly idiotic remark that has been the source of public humiliation add 10 points. If there has been a post about YOU, add 100 points.
And on and on and on.
But it would have to be on HF, limited frequency space (so we can find each other). How else could this diverse community all interact? HEY, WE COULD GET ON OUR HAM RADIOS!!
paul
Do you get extra points if you use split on your radio to interfere with rag chews or normal QSO several Khz down the band?

At first I thought that the staff of QRZ.com wasn't going to be allowed to participate! All the initial lists didn't provide for Administration, Moderator, or such. But, I see that along the way that we would be allowed to join in!
Seriously, if such a "QSO Party" were to take place, why not allow all bands from "DC to light"? There are many amateurs who participate on this site that only operate on 2 meter FM. There are those who only operate on HF. There are several (although probably not a majority) of us who operate on 160 meters at least through 70 cm. Those who operate on both VHF and HF (including CW, SSB, AM, FM, data, whatever) would probably have a better chance of "winning"! Of course, you might want to have various categories including "single band", "high power" and "low power" (i.e. 100 watts output or less), particular state, call area, etc. In fact, if you created enough categories then everyone could "win" something!
Now, for those who operate the Classic Exchange ("CX") contest (which really doesn't have any "prizes" at all) who think that "CQ CX" is a bit confusing on phone, then try "QRZ the QRZ QSO party", or, "QRZ QRZ". That should really confuse those who are not in the "know"!
Glen, K9STH
Sounds like fun.. Of course everyone will be searching for the elusive sMarty for the extra points...
I would suggest a couple or few separate tests, ie. one for CW, one for phone, and maybe a third for VHF/UHF....
What's the administrators have to say about it Glen??
I'd do it just to hear what everybody sounds like. I bet everybody sounds really whiny.
So anyway, how do we get "on the air?" What is that?
K3STX
01-28-2004, 12:45 AM
sMarty contacts are a SuperBonus of 10 mults!!
But sure, it can be anything, HF, VHF, any mode, whatever. The idea would be to have a chance to actually work some of these guys and actually be able to FIND them on the bands. When I am calling CQ on 40 M I wonder "I wonder if AG3Y is going to answer me" (or fill in the blank). But if there was a good chance that at, for example 0100 UTC on Sat. night from 7.03 to 7.04 would be the QRZ QSO party (or 7.25 to 7.30 for phone), well that would be kind of cool.
Could also make it a "contest" with a bizarre exchange, like
RS(t), QSO #, name, age, Member (Troll/Banned/Moderator), number of posts as of beginning of contest, waist size, Glen scolded (10 or 5 point variety), Orv scolded (they are all 25 points, sMarty worked, self-appointed humiliation factor, etc.
You know, this might not be a bad idea. Putting a voice to the name could make this even more fun. Hell, I would enjoy just listening to it.

K3STX noted something that tickled a nerve..
The exchange would be built up like the old 'SINPO' code that was used for SWL reports.
Honestly, it's been SOOO long I've forgotten, exactly, what each letter means in the acronymn. It had to do with (S)ignal strength, (I)nterference, (N)oise, etc..etc.. Each letter had a numerical value between 1 and 5 assigned to it. The higher number, the better the report.
For the QRZ.COM QP.. we could have a similiar type of exchange..
no RST.. that's just plain vanilla and EVERYONE else does it.. we need a 'hook'. Something that will make people WONDER about it and go see what's going on (A great way to promote the website! HI)
It would be where you PICK the one that fits you and then send the grouping that fits.
For example...
1 - First letter - Status on QRZ.COm
(A)dministrator,
(M)oderator,
(P)oster,
(T)roll,
(B)anned,
(G)uest
2- Second group - numbers) (YYYY)ear joined QRZ.
If (G)uest then use 4 zeros,
if (T) or (B) year acquired that status
3- Third group type of scolding with two digit rating between 00 and 10. 00 means nil or not much, 10 means you were 'just below the banning level.
(GSO) Glen scolded you openly on QRZ.COM
(GSP) Glen scolded you privately on QRZ.COM
(BQO) AA7BQ scolded you openly
(BQP) AA7BQ scolded you privately
(OSO) ORV scolded you openly
(OSP) ORV scolden you privately
(SSO) Scolded (by) Someone openly
(NBS) Never Been Scolded)
4- 4th group (two character group
Worked (B) or (T) QRZ.COM person
WS - worked sMarty
WN - worked NN6EE
WT - worked Troll
WB - worked Banned
5 - 5th group. (your rating of contact you are making. This is a 1 digit number with 1 meaning 'This QSO stinks!' to 9 meaning 'This QSO is EXCELLENT!'
So..,. using hte above scale Let's assume the following
I am a QRZ.COM (M(ember. I joined in (say) 1997.
Both Glen and ORV scolded me publicly but it was a mild one with humor mixed into it and I rate it a 3. I worked sMarty.
The contact was EXCELLENT!
My exchange would be (to sMarty)
"M1997GSO3OSO3WS9"
http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
How's that?

Chuck,
That is hilarious!!!! That exchange was priceless. We might want to consider PAYING sMarty to come out just for mutliplier points and comic effect.
By the way...SINPO

Maybe we should also get a multiplier for any qso to respect the channelization as recently proposed (4Kc on ssb, and do not remember how in cw as all topic disappeared http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ).
just an idea as those (non ham) who want to rule HF and have no clue about what a filter is.
K9STH
01-28-2004, 04:42 AM
Filter? Isn't that something that my mother used to put in a coffee maker to keep the grounds out (my wife and I don't drink coffee, just tea!).

I think you do drink coffee to stay awake so late
K9STH
01-28-2004, 05:50 AM
Pierre:
Coca-Cola has as much caffine as coffee (maybe even more!). I have been drinking "Coke" since I was less than a year old! Also, "regular" tea has as much caffine as coffee and I sometimes drink that as well.
Besides, it is before midnight in Dallas, Texas, right now! Thus, I am not staying up that late.
The first an last cup of coffee I ever had I drank just before midnight on New Year's eve as I was driving from northern Indiana back to Atlanta, Georgia, 1964 (next day was 1965). I stopped in central Tennessee and drank about a half cup with plenty of sugar (no cream). The taste of the coffee kept me awake all the way to my fraternity house on the Georgia Tech campus (about 150 miles)! I had my now wife's engagement ring in my pocket and I wanted to get back a few days before classes resumed after Christmas. I hated the taste of coffee so much that I have never had any since!
Now, my mother and father used to have a 10 cup coffee urn. Some days they would refill it at least twice (30 or more cups). My mother used to walk around with "a half of a cup of coffee" in her hand at all times! After my father died in 1985, my mother would make at least one of these urns per day until just before she died.
Anyway, my wife doesn't drink coffee (she drinks iced tea all day long!) and neither do any of my 3 daughters (aged 26, 30, and 36). All of their husbands drink coffee but they don't!

OK Glen, you won. Thanks to your emphasizements, QRZ qso party will also give a multiplier per drunk coke coffe tea or beer.
minus 100 points for working KLGF........
Wouldn't we have to go out of band to work KLGF? Don't remember seeing a ham call attached to that poster.
Can we look forward to a contest announcement in QST?

Frank
How about points for worst name you have been called in email resulting from one of your posts? Oops....forgot about the no "cuss" words on the air...
How about points for being called a lid by kc0ebm?
Seriously, would be fun just to have a time and target frequencies to QSO with folks here. Whether we agree or not, everyone I have met on the air from QRZ has always been really cool to QSO with.
Extra points if your call appears on "No-Clues" list (N0KLU)!
Oh that's right, you couldn't work him if you're on that list. Darn.
Was looking for that multiplier!
How about working Freebanders? Bound to find some?
Well yeah, if you worked KLGF you would be out of band and thus minus 100 points.... Of course you might be able to work cross band, but somehow I have a feeling that would be a violation too... Still minus 100 points....
I believe I am on "No Clue's" list but I have no clue where to find him on the band.
Not so sure if I would be able to find any "lovelys" that I have been called in e-mails... Can we use terms people have called us here in the forum??

Looks like you too have joined the ranks of those who have had a thread locked....and for trolling no less.
Like I said, I just calls em like I sees em.
EBM
AND.. for the final score computation..
IF you have been called by the diminutive version of your name - i.e. 'Chuckie' for Chuck or Charles..
OR 'bub'.. or 'dood', 'duuud', 'dude', 'dood'
Then you get an additional 1000 points.
There willl have to be an 'assisted' category. That will be where your post was 'REPOSTED' and/or 'COPIED' by subsequent posters ON THE SAME (or another new thread) and THEN commented upon!
KLGF.. what a (sorry.. Glen reminded us on another thread that the ice thickness was getting thin, so I better not!http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
He has some connex to the Maritime Industry. There IS a ship with the callsign KLGF and perhaps he's connected wtih that. HE does have knowledge of the maritime radio biz and is familiar with a couple of the Radio Officers unions out there and knows folks in those groups.
I suspect he is either an (ex) or current radio officer and has been for a while. A ham? who cares.. He's just a rabblerouser who likes to stir the pot..
HMM>. maybe he's one of our 'west coast buddies' who has returned under a new name?
I notice he's been ABSENT for a while? Guess he must have shipped out..

I think I'm going to compile a summary of the exchange and scoring suggestions and put them into one message for all to see.
HEH
This is hilarious! But you are all forgetting a crucial element to the QRZ experience. There HAS to be a code/no-code debate element to the contest! Either bonus points for working one of the chief trolls in that debate, or perhaps creating a code/no-code debating net, where your participation gives you bonus points! Sort of like copying the ARRL W1AW transmission during Field Day!
I would add a twist to the contest by having us all take portable rigs and antennas out in a field somewhere, and use emergency power. Do you think a contest like that could ever catch on? Naaaahhhhh...
You guys are all dreaming if you think you'll work sMarty (he of the scowling QRZ picture). Getting on an actual RADIO is so passé to sMarty. Catch him on the Internet, or at a Howard Dean meetup, or not at all!
Out.
