The Opprotunity safely landed early Sunday morning on Mars (0505 UTC). I of course stayed up (0005 EST) and recorded the whole thing on NASA TV because I'm a space kind of person.

The Opprotunity then sent us suprising pictures of flat, dusty terrain with astonishingly no boulders.

My wife and I were out of town for one of her hobby conferences. I drove her to her meeting, then went back to the hotel. While waiting for her to call me to pick her up, I started channel surfing and just happened upon Dr. Lee commenting on the venting of the freon. I can't believe how much time I spent watching as the thing landed and bounced. I can't believe how exciting it was, even without direct visuals of what was being described, just watching a bunch of technicians watching monitors and listening to the com traffic. Cool!

Yes, some people don't believe it, but that's actually a very exciting event. I really enjoy all the things and discussion of Mars and further exploration of the solar system, and I'm all for Bush's proposal.

The MER's are proving that they are worth all the $800 million that we spent for them. Some people think it's a waste, others are sensible and realize what a good future this is bringing to us.

The twin MER's are the future in progress and this will be continued in 2007 with the proposed "Phoenix" rover.

I look forward to all the NASA has in store for us.

I agree! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif It's pretty impressive how those rovers can fly so far AND land on a planet so far away without missing it!
VERY cool! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
