View Full Version : HOW DO LIKE YOUR IC706MKII
I am considering the IC706MKII for my Mobile ops. #I would like your feedback. #
Are the memories working for all bands?
Having any noise problems?
Thank you

Rick,
I use the 706 MK II G in my car on 40m & 17m mostly CW, and 2 and .7 FM. The radio is very nice on both modes. Lowband antenna is Hamstick, and a small MFJ tuner, which I set when I change bands, then stay within about 100 kHz. Antenna is on a bracket bolted to the bottom of the rear bumper, which raises the mounting point up to the top of the bumper. 1" ground strap from the bracket to car steel. Radio is in the trunk with #8 DC feed from power relay and fuse in engine compartment.
Some engine noise, but NB takes it all out. Only other noise is from overhead wires, DSP NR is helpful, but 500 Hz filter usually takes out the rest of the noise, and many contacts are armchair copy. I usually get very good sig reports.
I haven't had any problems with the memories.
Very happy with the 706. I did spend a lot of effort on the installation, but the radio works FB.

I liked mine fine. The only thing was, the receiver had a lot of internal noise; I could hear better with an FT-817 than with my 706 MKII, even with DSP enabled. I now use a Yaesu FT-897, which does hear better than my 706MKII did..
This should not be taken as condemnation of the 706MKII. I suspect that Amateur rigs differ quite a bit one from the other, even of the same make and model.

I have had the MKIIG for about a year and use it as a portable base in a mountain cabin. I love the little radio. I installed the optional 1.9 khz filter in the radio for ssb operation and like the results. The audio gets great reports with the stock mike which wasn't the case with earlier versions. The DSP works but it isn't the savior of all noise problems. I would certainly would recommend the radio. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've had my MKIIG for 6 weeks now and am using it as a base radio. Receive on HF is outstanding and it's never given me a bit of trouble. I've only used the radio for receive on anything below 2 meters but it looks promising once I load it up on HF/6.

By my mistake..... I have had two 706s and let them both go while trying other radios that people said that I should like better. #I should have never let them go. #
I have never had any trouble with any of my Icoms and even the audio sounds good to me. #I am now getting ready to buy my third 706 mk2g. #You just can't beat the versitility. #
BTW - The only short fall to this radio is the lack of a tuner and built-in SSB filters. #Both can be had for an extra $300.

Am using a 706MkIIG for both mobile and base. Mobile is using a High Sierra 1800Pro with an iBox controller (check out cq73.com)
Can't say enough about the combination. getting 1:1 SWR from 80-10m, and tuning is a snap with the AH emulation the iBox has with the 706's tuner port. Getting very good signal reports.
Noise is a problem with weak signals though -- I am considering getting one of the SSB filters, since the AF DSP doesn't do a good job with noise reduction on weak signals. It pretty much wipes out or distorts the weak signal along with the noise. Sometimes it helps to use the shift knob to offset a little bit off the center of the signal.
I am very happy with the 706, even though I have some gripes about it, it was a good decision and I have no qualms recommending it. There are a lot of 706 owners out there. Very often the people I speak with on HF are also using the 706 models, and many also use the High-Sierra motorized antennas with good things to say about them.

Has anyone seen the prices on the IC-706KMKIIg? #As of March 14, 2005 they are over $900.00.
Why?
