I just have to say this rig is flat AWESOME! I have a FT-857in the mobile, this radio at the QTH. It programs like the 857 that makes it easier on the ol' thinking cap. I say the best so far for the $ with the $200.00 rebate. If you get one you won't sorry.

Hi, just thought I'd drop a reply, I bought a FT897 last Xmas, I agree, AWESOME radio, I think it out-performs the IC706 Mk2G I had before,I paid enough though, £1098! I enjoy radio, so I consider it money well spent.
(If anyone interested I use a Hustler BTV-6 vertical multi-trap for HF, found this less noisy than the G5RV), and the 897 really brings the signals home!
If ya got the £, this is the radio for ya. Enjoy.

Hai,

just bought the ft897 intending to use it at my dx-pedition next year february and march to 9M6, 9M8 and 9M2.
Also put on it the power supply fp30.
Can anyone tell me their experience with the G5RV junior antenna?? in connection with this equipment?
I take also with me the portable tuner MFJ971.
It looks short and light to me for taking in the airplane

Bought a 10 month old FT-897 from a gentlemen who just had to have the FT-897D. Picked it up for a sweet $600 in the original box. I am so glad I bought it. Beautiful radio and built like a tank. Menus are very easy to use. The DSP is a feature no radio should be without. Clear sounding audio and the color display is great. Many colors to choose from so one will suit your liking. Easy to read display. I use this rig as a base station and I am considering the FC-40 auto tuner. Yaesu really has done it again! Best radio for the price. Slaughters the IC-706 radio. Buy it, you'll like it and will not be sorry.

What KE4IZA said.

I wanted one before they came out, based on the advertisement. Now I have one and it is more then I expected. I have the two internal batteries and my next purchase will be an 857.

It is an excellent piece of equipment. I must agree that on 160 meters there are some issues with BC band interference. My first thought was that it suffered from poor image rejection, but moderate strength BC stations appear to mix somewhere and are spewed across the band, even with IPO or ATT enabled. Several users have suggested that it might be steering diodes that are not biased to complete cut-off when switching components out. I never noticed it until I actually put the rig on a full size halfwave for 160 meters. To be honest, it has never caused me any issues with contacts I have made there, and since I use an auto antenna tuner which appears to add a fair amount of BC rejection on the tuned frequency, it probably is a non-issue in my installation.

I do love that little rig!
