I have both, but not that familiar with either, but here goes.

The v-8 is a single bander, true 5 watts, receive 136-174. Great rig. Consider the dry pack using AA batts. (I have a v-8 for sale, ended up with three of them).

The W32 is a true dual bander, much like two rigs in one, can do cross-band repeat, and can scan/ receive on both bands at once. I am not real familiar with mine yet. Has a number of battery packs, not all are 5 watts. Does not receive out-of-band. 200 channels.

Also look at the tiny T90A, tri-band, very wide receive.
5 watts, 550 channels, about $250. Expensive LiOn battery pack.

I own a IC-W32a. It is a great rig, mine WILL monitor outside of ham freqs. With the 9.6 volt pack it is a full 5 watt on both bands. Gets warm in the hand at 5 watts if you are long spoken, but overall a great little rig for the money. Grab the W-32 in my opinion.

You are right, it will receive the public service band, but not a really wide band receiver like my T90.

Haven't had time to use it much, but looks like a great rig.

I'am also a owner of the Icom V8 ,And so far I can

say for sure is that the 600Mah battery they supply with

the Radio does'nt last very long even after a full charge.

But if you buy one of the 1650mah battery it will give

you a full day of rag chewing for sure.

My friend sounds like he has a D-104 mic wired to his so

this give you a idea how good the audio sounds on this

little rig, I rate it a 8 from 10

I have had an Icom W32a for over five years and love it. Wife liked mine so much last year we got her one. Only thing I changed was adding a better antenna to both rigs as we hike a lot in the mountains. Go for the W32a you won't be sorry
